BALQUHAIN(1) M/B (Owner Dr. P.M. Watt) S/Lt. B.D. MacIntyre, R.N. [s/Lt. MacIntyre had previously been to Dunkirk in the M/B Silver lloon]. 2]. 31st May(2) 0900 S/It. MacIntyre took over the Buiquhain. 0930 Left Ramsgate. 1300 Arrived off Bray. Ferried troops to ships, including 200 to the dr. Venomous. (3) Repeated high level bombing attacks on the beach and off- lying ships. 1700 Fouled propeller. 1710 Taken in tow by a drifter. 1730 Arrived Dunkirk. Loaded up with troops 1740 Sailed for Ramsgate. 2230 Arrived Ramsgate. Disembarked 54 troops. (4) Total 54 [s/Lt. MacIntyre then transferred to the M/B Encore and again went to Dunkirk]. Authority - R.O.I, p.145. R.O.II, p.550. (1) Referred to by S/Lt. MacIntyre as the "Balaquain". Not mentioned in D.R. (2) S/Lt. MacIntyre says it was 30th May. (3) The Captain of the Venomous reported to Captain (D) 16th Destroyer Flotilla as follows: "Although he did not belong to my ship I should like to bring to your notice the valuable work performed by the S/Lt. Royal Navy in command of the 11/B Balquhain off La Panne and Bray beaches. This M/B went round to many other larger launches and gave them precise orders, at a time when they were urgently needed for disembarkation, and when there appeared to be a 'Wait until ordered' attitude name of this officer but I consider that his work among many of them. I regret that I do not know the on the example he set during the bombing raids and in under this occasion was extremely praiseworthy and difficult conditions was largely instrumental keeping the embarkation going". VENOMOUS (D.75) 16th Destroyer Flotilla Lt.Cdr. J.E.H. McBeath, R.N. 31st May 0035 Sailed from Dover, the dr. Whitehall in company. 0350 Arrived off Bray. Waited off the beach for 1 hour. 0450ca Ordered by R.A. Dover to berth along- side Dunkirk east pier. 0520ca Remained alongside for 30 minutes and 0800 then left harbour with 1,200 troops. Arrived Dover. Disembarked 670 troops. (1) 0940 Sailed for the beaches. 1530 Arrived off Bray. No small craft available so lowered the ship's M/B and whaler to embark troops. The M/B broke down and was towed back to the ship. The M/B Balquhain used the whaler and ferried some 200 troops from the shore to the trip, during repeated high level bombing attacks h 1 on the beack and off-lying ships. 1700 Ordered by R.A. Dover to proceed alongside and embark troops. While waiting for a berth, aircraft appeared and dropped bombs. - Venomous requested permission to return to harbour to replenish ammunition, as her H.A. ammunition was nearly exhausted. 1900 Venomous ordered to proceed alongside by S.N.O. Dunkirk. The ship proceeded alongside but no troops arrived. 60 German aircraft were observed approaching from the S.E. Fire was opened with all guns. The gun recoil parted all the hawsers and as there was no berthing party available on the jetty, the Venomous proceeded out of harbour, so as to retain mobility during the air attack. All H.A. ammunition was now expended, and on receipt of orders from V.A. Dover, the Venomous sailed for Dover. 2220 Arrived Dover. Disembarked 408 troops. 1st June 1245 Sailed for Dunkirk. 1430 All destroyers recalled by V.A. Dover. 1545 Arrived Dover. 2050 Embarked a beach party of 10 officers and 90 men and sailed for a given position off Malo-les-bains. 2nd June 0030 Arrived off Malo, but no boats came off from the shore. No. 1 Landing Section (Lt. Cdr. Craig, R.N.) pulled ashore in the ship's whaler to investigate. Nothing further was seen of this party. 0200 R.A. "VENOMOUS", after waiting off the beach for one hour,proceeded,or the receipt of orders from R.A.D., to berth alongside DUNKIRK Eastern Breakwater, laving remained alongside for thirty minutes, H.M.S. "VENOMOUS" left harbour with 1200 troops on board, entering DOVER Harbour it 0800. 3. At 0940 31st. May 1940 H.M.S. "VENOMOUS" left arbour with orders to proceed to BRAY or LAPANNE beaches to embark roops. The ship arrived off BRAY at 1530, and finding no small raft available, I lowered my motor boat and whaler to embark roops.
