During the afternoon of the 3rd the French authorities transmitted the figure
of French troops still remaining in Dunkirk. This was about 30,000, a pro-

in a French M.T.B. V.T.B. 25. Near the North Goodwin Light Vessel the

On the conclusion of the blocking operation there remained a gap of about
100 to 120 feet unobstructed on the west side of the channel. Part of this gap
was, however, shoal water, because of the shelving bank.
Disembarkation figures, 4th June
There were landed in England on 4th June 26,175 persons, of which British
ships had evacuated 21,600, French 3,838, and Belgian 737. These figures
included a number of survivors, both troops and ships' crews, from sunken
ships and some refugees. It was recorded that 622 of the total were evacuated
from the beaches, but it is doubtful whether any of these were actually
evacuated from the beaches, for the figure includes many such as the 43 French
troops landed by the Pangbourne, who were taken from a French vessel
(probably the mail packet Rouen) which had run aground on a sand bank: the
260 brought over by the Beatrice Maud: a number (apparently 210) recorded as
evacuated from the beaches and landed in England but actually ferried from
Dunkirk pier to various transports, by the motor launch Bonny Heather.

" I was sent to Ramsgate for the Evacuation, and selected the BONNY
HEATHER myself as a leader of a Convoy of motor boats for the Beach
work, and believe me the choice was justified, as of the whole lot
attached to the Convoy we were the only one to finish the course
throughout.
I'm afraid I am rather bad at descriptive accounts, but perhaps
one day I may have the pleasure of meeting you and then probably
be able to tell you more about the affair. This I can tell you, the
BONNY HEATHER behaved like a perfect lady in spite of theunusual
treatment she received, and stood up to it like a trojan and never
let us down - 7 complete round trips Ramsgate/Dunkirk after filling up
Transports (lying off) from the Beaches.
You say you heard third hand that we carried 80 men. I
don't know, of course, who told you that, but it was true on the last
trip, but normally about 60. On one trip that we picked up survivors
from the S.S. "Scotia" which was sunk by bombs, when full of French
Colonial tropps, we picked up the Chief Steward and 40 soldiers out
of the water and with our own crew a total of 45 wet sodden men, some
all in and they were lying about and not standing as soldiers were
in goodish condition, so you can imagine what your little vessel had
to put up with.
We tried to keep her in as good condition as possible under
the circumstances from sheer admiration of the gallant little ship,
which in my opinion deserves to carry the .C.colours.
I can't even begin to describe the Hell under which the
operations were carried out - bombed, machine gunned, shelled, caught
in parachute flares and bombed. - that little ship was certainly built

outside harbour at 4 p.m. to the Tug "SUN XV" to be towed
across in company with other yachts. Three other yachts
make fast astern of us, under way 6.35 p.m. Engines running
at half-speed to ease the strain of the tow ropes. Slight
swell. The tow ropes of two of the yachts broke and they
were told to proceed on under own power. Arrived off Dunkin
at 11.30 p.m. and cast off from Tug. Proceeded into Dunkir
past the Mole, and up the Canal for about 2 miles. Moored
alongside the quay and proceeded to take troops on board.
Could find no Englishmen so took on board 40 Frenchmen.

Teddington for overhaul. Those Motor Boats not mentioned
should remain at Sheerness pending further instructions.
Tug will call Sheerness at low water to embark Lt.Comdr.Dusting
who is to see that Motor Boats in following list are sent to
Toughs. Vessels capable of steaming should accompany tug under
own power.

In reply to your circular headed T.0.9144/STN.6B, I
have been fortunate enough to receive from Lieut. Charles
Waterland Read, D.S.C., R.N.R., who was in charge of my boat
BONNY HEATHER at Dunkirk a very interesting account of his act-
ivities in this connection, and I presume that I am entitled,
without his permission, since it is difficult to get in touch
with him, to send you on a copy of the relevant parts of his
letter for the purpose you indicate.

In view of the remarks contained in this letter and the
fact that the boat is still retained by your Ministry, I am
wondering whether it would not be possible to have the Ministry
take over the ship outright and compensate me for its approxi-
mate value.
You will appreciate that, being paid the sum of £9. a
month for the hire of it (of which I have so far received one
month) is not entirely adequate in view of the fact that I have
still to pay the balance of an account of nearly £50. spent on
the boat to put it into commission at the beginning of the sea-
son, apart from the original cost of the boat itself.
Any suggestions that you would care to make as to the
quarters to whom I should address any representations on these
lines would be greatly appreciated.

given sailing directions and told to join a convoy
which had left an hour previously with "Queen Boadicea"
and "Queen of the Thames". Before leaving, the Officer
in charge kindly agreed to send telegrams to our respec-
tive wives that we would not be home for a day or two.
We set off at full speed and enquired of the Nore Light-
ship if they had seen the convoy, but without success, so
Horse Gore and South Channels
we proceeded via the Cant. Four Fathoms/ and passed a convoy
of about six vessels, but they were bound for Ramsgate.
We arrived off Margate without having seen our convoy
and as our compass has not been adjusted and could not
be relied upon, we reported at Margate to Commander
Stanslet, the Naval Officer in charge, who instructed us
to proceed to Ramsgate. About 6 p.m. we arrived at
Ramsgate and reported to the Officer in charge, and were
supplied with steel helmets and life belts, and were
instructed to join a convoy leaving Ramsgate the follow-
ing day; having no facilities for sleeping on board,
we stayed the night at an Hotel adjoining the harbour.
On Thursday the 30th May, before we left Ramsgate a
number of Naval Ratings whose boats had broken down were
endeavouring to obtain berths as additional crews on
boats which were leaving for Dunkirk, so we consented
to take with us a man called McPherson who, I understood,
had once been in the Naval Air Force and was a very use-
ful man. At 6.45 p.m. on the same day we joined a
convoy of ten craft headed by "Bonny Heather" all towing
ship's boats, and proceeded on a coursefor Dunkirk.
At 8 p.m. the engine started to falter, the cause
obviously being a failure of the petrol supply. I stopped
the engine and disconnected the petrol pipes and endeavoured
to clear the obstruction, and had the engine going again
in about 25 minutes.
