Spent the day off Bray, towing loaded
boats to the destroyers, and on the
return journey taking empty boats
to the vicinity of the pier and
letting them drift ashore. Troops
were also ferried in Ankh.
The Ankh's M/L was lowered and used
to tow loaded whalers to the
destroyers.
It is estimated that 900/1,000 men
were thus ferried off.

R.A. Dover, his staff, and Capt. Howson
transferred to the dr. Express at about 0130;
and Captain Howson transferred to the tr. Olvina
off Bray at 0300; later, still off Bray, he
transferred to the dr. Scimitar's M/B.
The 9 yachts of the Portsmouth Inner Patrol
arrived at 0610(1) and Capt. Howson transferred
to the Inner Patrol Yacht Ankh, and used her
as his H.Q. for the remainder of the day.
During the forenoon there were ample ships for
embarkation but a lop had developed which
seriously hampered heavily laden boats. With
the falling tide a considerable number of boats
grounded and remained ashore till the afternoon,
but thanks to the organisation of boat keepers,
few were left to drift.
At La Panne, there appears to have been a great
shortage of boats and power boats, but at Bray
there was a great improvement on the previous
day.
At noon the lop subsided. The G/B Mosquito
anchored close to Bray pier, and embarkation
accelerated rapidly.
An enemy gun beyond La Panne opened up on the
Mosquito and other craft, forcing them to
withdraw to the westward. Some 30 enemy
bombers escorted by many fighters appeared at
1930. Most of them went on to bomb Dunkirk;
the remainder bombed the Mosquito and other
craft in the vicinity.
The Ankh was damaged by a near miss and started
making water forward and through the stern glands
Being of the opinion that the Ankh was unlikely
to stand up to further "rough treatment", Capt.
Howson decided at about 2000 to return to
Dover, and ordered the yacht Amulree to keep
company. Being some 2 or 3 miles to seaward,
in the failing light, Ankh was unable to pass
a message to R.A. Dover's flagship [at this time
the dr. Keith].
Shortly after, the Inner Patrol yachts Caryanda
and Eilla II 2) closed the Ankh; the former
reported that she needed fuel, the latter that
she was leaking, had slipped her astern gear,
and also needed lubricating oil.
As the fuel drifters Lord Keith and Lord
Collingwood, which had been promised, had not
turned up, the Caryanda was ordered to Dover to
refuel.
The Eilla II was ordered to close destroyers
inshore, if she had fuel; in the event, she too
proceeded to Dover.
1st June
At 0145, the escorting yacht Amulree was rammed
by the dr. Vimy in the Downs and sunk; her
crew were picked up.
The Ankh, which had kept down the water by baling
arrived at Dover at 0815. Capt. Howson reported
to V.A. Dover's office and requested to return
to the beaches; he was however in an extremely
fatigued condition and had completely lost his
voice.

directed half of them to work off Bray and half off La Panne.
Actually, 3 of the I.P. yachts worked off La Panne and six

This rating was alone in the twin-diesel engine-
room and although on du ty day and night and sick with
the fumes was, with the greatest difficulty, persuaded
finally to leave his post and take a rest and fresh
air, when a stoker was found to relieve him for a
short time. By his strong sense of duty and cheerful
demeanour set an excellent example to those around him.
Conspicuous under fire.

when the La Panne beach and piers were being heavily
shelled, volunteers were called for to take in a
whaler to bring off a final contingent of soldiers.
These three young men came forward and returned to the
beach again and again. They all were invariably to
be found where work was difficult and dangerous.

and Potter-Irwin accompanied me and reported to Ramsgate,
volunteering ships and services on the following day if required.
Our names were accordingly entered on the Volunteer's List.
June 2. Having reported to S.N.O. Ramsgate, we were informed
that only fast and shallow draft vessels were required. During
course of day, found M.T.B.101. lying idle and requested use
of same, but were informed that the vessel was R.A.F. property
and we were unable to obtain permission to use her.
Received instructions to stand by and later to return
to own Base.
Throughout twenty seven hours spent at Dunkirk and
adjacent beaches, were under continuous bombardment from the
ein and shelling from the land.

BY YACHTS OF THE INNER PATROL IN THE EVACUATION OF THE SOLDIERS
FROM
DUNKIRK.
Nine Yachts of the Inner Patrol, "ANKH", "BOUNTY", "CARYANDA",
"LAHLOO", "THELE", "SERIOLA", "EILA II", "AHOLA", & "NONETA", sailed
in company from Hamble at 1800 on Wed. 29th. May, and arrived at
Dover at 0830 the following morning. We were ordered to sail from
Dover at 1930 on the 30th. and to proceed to the beaches at
Bray and La Banne and assist in the embarkation of the troops. The
flotilla arrived off Bray at 0600, 31st. May and then divided and
acted independently. Owing to the shelving nature of the beach, it
was impossible for our yachts to approach very close; instead, they
had to lay off and assist boats coming off form the beach. They
either took the troops on board and transfered them to larger ships
or else took the small boats in tow to larger ships. The operations
were greatly hampered by the lack of good motor boats which could
operate from the beach. Thert appeared to be only a very few and,
during the day, some of these were left on the beach. All the I.P.
Yachts launched their motor boats and operated them as long as poss-
ible but the fresh onshore breeze soon put them out of commission.
Knowing the conditions on this coast, I had asked before sailing
from Dover whether suitable motor boats to operate on the beaches
were available over the other side and had been assured that there
been over there before the beaches came under fire at about 1600,
were literally hundreds. There is no doubt that, had these boats
thousands troops could have been brought off. At dusk, the
others remained were until dawn on Sat. 1st. June. "ANKH", "AHOLA", "THELE",

Ruytingen Buoy and meet tow of small craft coming over
and take them to the beaches.

troops again until 2045. Was then ordered to stand off
shore.

BY YACHTS OF THE INNER PATROL IN THE EVACUATION OF THE SOLDIERS FROM
DUNKIRK.
Nine Yachts of the Inner Patrol, "ANKH", "BOUNTY", "CARYANDA",
"LAHLOO", "THELE", "SERIOLA", "EILA II", "AHOLA", & "NONETA", sailed
in company from Hamble at 1800 on Wed. 29th. May, and arrived at
Dover at 0830 the following morning. We were ordered to sail from
Dover at 1930 on the 30th. May and to proceed to the beaches at
Bray and La Banne and assist in the embarkation of the troops. The
flotilla arrived off Bray at 0600, 31st. May and then divided and
acted independently. Owing to the shelving nature of the beach, it
was impossible for our yachts to approach very close; instead, they
had to lay off and assist boats coming off form the beach. They
either took the troops on board and transfered them to larger ships
or else took the small boats in tow to larger ships. The operations
were greatly hampered by the lack of good motor boats which could
operate from the beach. Thert appeared to be only a very few and,
during the day, some of these were left on the beach. All the I.P.
Yachts launched their motor boats and operated them as long as poss-
ible but the fresh onshore breeze soon put them out of commission.
Knowing the conditions on this coast, I had asked before sailing
from Dover whether suitable motor boats to operate on the beaches
were available over the other side and had been assured that there
were literally hundreds. There is no doubt that, had these boats
been over there before the beaches came under fire at about 1600,
thousands more troops could have been brought off. At dusk, the
Yachts that were damaged were ordered to return to Dover and the

Report of Inner Patrol Yacht "CARYANDA". C.O,Lt. D.A.L.Kings,R.N.V.R.
May 29. 1743. Left Hamble.
May 30. 0840. Arrived Dover.
May 31. 0600. Arrived at Bray beach and ordered to proceed to
La Panne beach and take soldiers off beach to larger
craft lying farther out. Then ordered by Commodore on
board "BOUNTY" to return to La Panne and try to get small
boats to transport troops from the shore to us. Returned
to Bray with three small boats and proceeded to embark
troops.
1100. Ordered by destroyer "KEITH" to proceed to Outer
Ruytingen Buoy and meet tow of small craft coming over
and take them to the beaches.
1830. Arrived at the beaches with small craft. Embarked
troops again until 2045. Was then ordered to stand off
shore.
2100. Ordered to return to Dover.
June 1. Arrived Dover 0614.
Estimated number of soldiers taken from beaches, 250.

T.W. Schofield, A.B. J.26827, and H.H. Smith, Acting P.O.,
P/JX 125648 volunteered to take a small rowing boat in to
the beach and collect troops off there. They did so under
fire until their boat hit a submerged object and sank.
After swimming about for some time and supporting some troops
that were in the water, they were picked up and returned to their
ship. They afterwards volunteered to take another boat,
but there were none available.
