Commanding M.B. RAPIDE.
RAMSGATE.
10.6.40.
SUBMITTED RECORD OF M.B. RAPIDE removing B.B.F. from Dunkirk
Beach.
Received orders at SHEERNESS at 14.00 hours on 30-5-40 to proceed to Downs in convoy with other motor boats, escort vessel Drifter
"STRATHELLIOTT".
Arrived Downs 23.45 towing two broken-down boats. Received order from STRATHELLIOTT at 01.30 on 31-5-40 to proceed to Dunkirk to embark troops from beach, taking M.B. MARY ROSE in tow. Had trouble with tow during night and handed over to STRATHELLIOTT
about 06.00 hrs, and carried on to Dunkirk alone. Arrived about
09.15. Floated ladder ashore on line and proceeded to haul troops aboard; slow process owing to surf. Dropped anchor seawards and backed on to beach. Loaded and hauled off on flood with 72 aboard, transferred to ship lying off shore (name not known), picked up small boat adrift and used form ferrying from beach to my ship.
Transferred 3 ship loads, last one at 21.30 hours on to BLACK JAVA.
Anchored half mile off shore and repaired engine. At 04.10 hours
Attempted to pick up a load at 23.00 hours but engine failed.
SKIPJACK. SKPPJACK loaned me a boat and crew in charge of Sub.
on 196-40 picked up ship's boat and loaded two loads on to
Lieut. Ruck who went ashore and filled my ship and his boat and also took in tow large motor launch with 32 French soldiers on board which was aground. Was unable to locate SKIPJACK or any salvoes of bombs. Followed her with object of transferring and my other ship except large tug steaming towards La Panne, dodging loads. She eventually hit and completely destroyed, we were half unable hour. Turned round and headed back to Dunkirk and above picked was to find any survivors, although we cruised around for up three an sailors from top mast of a ship which was just
