414 i 52 June, wreck close outside of the entrance and then let go of the tugs. During the period we were at Dunkirk, shells were flying overhead, air raids, shrapnel shells were exploding, pieces flying over the bridge of the tug. No damage done. We remained close to the entrance of the pier heads after getting the towrope on board. Two vessels that came close to us hailed us for directions to get into and alongside of the East Pier. To instructed them how to get in and the "FOREMOST" let one of them into the berth. We then dropped alongside of a small vessel alongside of the East Pier at 11.55 Dame waiting further orders. About 12.15 Refle of the 31st the Salvage Officer informed me that a Wireless message was coming through. 12.30 BeMa we received message to return Dover. Both Tugs then left the Pier proceeding to Dover. When off the South Foreland we received a message telling us to return to the North Goodwin and report on Drifters "GOLDEN GIFT"and "SHIPMATES" that were ashore. We returned telling "FOREMOST" to proceed on to Dover. On a proaching the North Goodwin we could see a drifter coming along with other vessels and closed her about 8.10 Balle It was the "GOLDEN GIFT" whose master reported that he had been ashore and got off again and he had not see the "SHIPMATES". We could see across the Goodwin Sands and no sign of anything ashore. Sent a message to Value Dover about the "GOLDEN GIFT" and returned to Dover arriving alongside of the P.W. Pier at 10.15 Stelle We did not see or hear anything of the Tug "ST.ABBS". Yours faithfully, Sgd.) F.J.HOPGOOD. MASTER. 1. M. Signed Tuesday 11th June 1940. DOVER.

101 especially as I was patially incapacitated by a wound on my left foot. As we were a long way from the French coast I decided that there was very little chance of HAIG falling into enemy hands and that no doubt help would soon be forthcoming in reply to the wireless message I had asked X440 to send. I hauled down HAIG's ensign and took it aboard LADY CABLE and we tried to make towards the English coast. Unfortunately the engine kept stopping and we made very slow progress and finally nothing would make our engine start again. We drifted helplessly for several hours and then sighted a Bell Buoy which I believe may have been the N.W. Goodwin Bell Buoy, but we did not get close enough to make sure. At last we sighted a warship and waved HAIG's White Ensign to try to attractattention. We were seen and the ship altered course towards us and came up close to LADY CABLE. She was the French transport ROUEN of Dieppe and was packed with troops from Dunkirk. An officer asked what I wanted and I told him that we were broken down and asked to be taken abcard. To my surprise my appeal was met with a blunt "No" with no explanation, and the ROUEN steamed away. My crew and I felt angry at this in view of the fact that we had rescued over 200 French soldiers during the night. No doubt the ROUEN had good reasons for not taking us aboard but no explanation was given and I would like if possible to discover why she was unable to help us. Luckily another ship some considerable distance away had noticed the ROUEN and observed that she had not picked us up. This ship was the CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH and she came up and took us in tow to the Downs where she was bound for in ballast. On arrival in the Downs where CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH dropped anchor, we were able to start up the engine of LADY CABLE and I decided once again to try to make for Dover. However, we broke down after a run of about 15 minutes and were picked up by a tug (Operational - I don't know her name). She had orders to proceed to Ramsgate with H.M. Drifter VIKING in tow and was about to do this when we broke down near her. She towed us to the VIKING and I boarded the VIKING to have my injured foot attended to and get some rest. VIKING and LADY CABLE were towed round to Ramsgate where we arrived about 2100. I was landed and taken to "Merrie England" and then to Ramsgate General Hospital. The Commanding Officer of VIKING at my request reported the return of LADY CABLE and that one member of my crew, Cadet Rating Price was missing but might be aboard French warship X440. He also reported direct to C. in C., Dover, about HAIG. A little later, while I was still at "Merrie England", the Commanding Officer of VIKING arrived to tell me that he had been informed from Dover that HAIG was safe. Unfortunately he had no news for me of Cadet Rating Price. The behaviour of my crew throughout the operation had been magnificent. The taking off or over 200 French troops and 6 British from the Mole was conducted quickly and calmly under difficult and hazardous conditions. Later, Cadet Rating Price's work in helping to get the HAIG alongside LADY CABLE cannot be too highly praised. Without the great initiative and efficiency he displayed the operation would not have been successful and the HAIG would have drifted ashore to the S.W. of Dunkirk. After/

186 SECRET. Appendix II. to report of sinking of H.M.S. GRENADE. After the explosion aft I observed a large number of ratings blown into the oily water, several of whom were badly injured. With the aid of the Gunner T. I cut away the lashings of the after Carley float and launched it. I swam after the drifting float and with the mutual help of one or two ratings we hauled each other on board. I then collected the seriously injured and one or two uninjured men. The First Lieutenant was heard to order men to remain in the ship and I took the float back to the ship collecting a steward en route. The ship lurched heavily to port as I reached the side and since the forecastle was blazing I ordered the raft to stand off. At this juncture another rating was observed in a patch of oil fuel about 40 yards from the ship. I rescued this man with the float and took in tow a T.S.O.'s float which was supporting two P.Os who had since abandoned ship. Two destroyers and two trawlers passed without stopping and a French tug landed our party on the west side of the docks amid the blazing ruins. An ambulance picked up our party and proceeded towards the heart of the town. When the ambulance stopped for more casualties the party disambarked, and were forced to leave one seriously injured seaman (Coates) who was then taken to the base military hospital. At this point a lost Bren gun crew joined forces and the idea of escaping to England in a small boat was formulated. I took the whole party, eight sailors and eight soldiers, and proceeded on the carrier to the docks. A gendarme prevented our embarcation in a drifter, the captain of which had signified his willingness to take us. We then proceeded on the carrier towards the eastern jetty, but our progress was halted by a blazing ammunition lorry. The commencement of intense aerial bombardment forced up to seek shelter in the vaults where Army officers and men provided us with dry clothing etc. I then reported the Naval party to the S.N.O. Dunkirque and after suggesting we remained in the town he gave the party full permission

1193 -190 187 to seek a boat and sail to England. We made our way towards the pier and P.O. Emery and myself became detached from the main party. In the course of a talk with a French soldier I discovered he possessed a motor boat with which he was desirous of escaping to England. P.O. Emery sought out and brought along the remainder of the party, including the Bren gun crew and with P.O. Bennãon managed to embark the whole party, with equipment, and against the wishes of the Frenchman. Then after considerable tactful persuasion and adjustment of top weight, plus the encouragement of casting off the painter, the engine was started and the bows pointed towards England at 21.00/29. P.O. Bennion took the wheel and I shaped a course for the harbour nouth and channel buoys. After darkness fell I checked my compass on the stars and found it had a variation of about 10°W. I was then able to set a course for the S.E. coast of England. All lights were extinguished outside the small cabin and most of the party fell asleep after having eaten a little food. The boat was well equipped with fuel and stores and the small engine gave us an estimated speed of five knots. The trip across was uneventful. The engine was stopped to allow a German diesel engined boat to pass. Several destroyers and other craft passed us, while we passed one floating mine which I decided to leave untouched. At 03.30 the engine stopped and about the same time two drifters have in sight. I decided to hail the drifter because I was uncertain of my position, having no chart or maps. The drifter altered course towards us and took us aboard and the boat in tow. I found my position to be about 15 miles S.S. of Ramsgate and I estimate that my course made good would have brought us to a point S. of Ramsgate (Deal?) at about 08.00 on Thursday, May 30th. P.O. Bennion remained at the wheel continuously from 21.00 to 02.00 and with P.O. Emery brought the wounded seaman safely to the Naval base in spite of attempts by the Army to claim him as a casualty. The two P.Os. mentioned carried out all duties with precision and showed great initiative in the handling of the situation. The behaviour of
