Her bows torn apart. her rudder cracked and her engines disabled. a converted coasting barge, Viking. limped back to Millhead Creek. Great Wakering.
this week, after taking part in the evacuation of the British forces from
Dunkirk.
She is owned by Mr. Tranter. the manager of Great Wakering brickfields.
and is ideally suited for work in shoal waters, drawing only 4ft. 6in. of water.
She weighs about a hundred and sixty tons.
Her master, Mr. Dick Gregory: of Mill
Head Villas, Great Wakering, was very laconic about his experiences. "It was a new experience." he said. ** I'd never been that way before. If need be I'd go again to-morrow." His nephew. Mr. William H.

R.A.F. fighters and German bombers. The first trip was accomplished without incident, but on the second we became stranded on the beach. German bombers left us alone at first, thinking we were derelict, but when we attempted to refloat the boat about thirty German 'planes bombed and machine-gunned us. The only casualty was a soldier-tucked away in the most inaccessible part of the boat-who was hit on a leg. The effort of refloating damaged her bows and put the forward gears of the engines out of action. We had to make our way back to the warships in reverse!
Mr. Ratcliffe said he discovered a silver threepenny bit on the boat, and kept it as a lucky charm. He estimated that nearly a thousand men were rescued by the

1. Minutes of Meeting held on 23rd October were agreed.
2. Matters arising were discussed:
(a) "Renown" Agreed to inform owner that the Department will pay
£500 on account if desired while arrangements are made for a valuation.
(b) "Sceneshifter" Agreed to confirm verbal offer of £850.
(c) "Brywyn"
Agreed to wait reply to letter of 5.11.40 and generally to adopt the principle that owner must prove his claim.
(d) "Rosabelle"
Agreed to arrange for Mr. Wimpenny (Fisheries
Officer) to contact the owner and explain
Department's position and without committing
Department, unless it were apparent that claimant would accept, offer settlement of £100.

Agreed to ask Mr.Wimpenny to obtain a comparison of the Deal Boats lost.
(f) "Mare Nostrum" Agreed to inform owner that the Department is not satisfied that evidence has been produced to show that the articles covered by the claim were on board.
3. Report of payments for period ending 5th November amounting to
£4,074.7.2a was presented and passed.
4. The following cases were discussed:-

(a) "Madame Sansgene" Agreed to refer papers to Mr. Barnett for a valuation in view of a possible relationship between claimant and builder;pointing this out and also that had the relationship not been apparent, Department would have paid as claimed in all probability.
