Head of N.L's first reaction to this proposal is that it is not practicable, observing that for the purposes of the Dunkirk evacuation large numbers of privately owned small craft were requisitioned and afterwards released, and that accurate records of the vessels requisitioned were not kept.
2. Will M. Branch remark?
(Sgd.) A.F.J..RICHARDSON.
for Head of N.L.
9th May, 1944.
A very large number of small craft were used in the Dunkirk evacuation and all privately owned vessels known to have taken part were recorded by D. of S.T. As far as is known in Branch, none of these vessels was requisitioned for the operation. The list is not, however, complete as many vessels assisted but did not report to the Authorities.
2. In addition, many privately owned requisitioned vessels on naval service at the time were employed but it may be that the crews have since changed.
3. As it would be impossible in many cases to confirm or refute a claim that a particular vessel did or did not take part,
M.Branch feels that the proposal to award a pennant to "the little ships" would be impracticable.
