A note about image and OCR quality

Every reasonable effort has been made to present these document images as flat, straight and accurately cropped as possible. During the course of the Monday this Section arranged for and got 40 vessels to Sheerness by Monday evening. It has been an enormous task, resulting from the indiscriminate taking up of vessels without formal requisition, to get the exact picture setting out the present situation. Innumerable lists, and a deal of correspondence, from every port OF and person concerned, boatyards included, were scrutinised. in order to obtain and collate all the information to enable a complete and comprehensive list to be drawn up. This entailed a great deal of checking, cross-checking and investigation, and, N R a large amount of correspondence with owners has often been necessary to clarify the position. A number of vessels were not shown on any list, but were simply taken, and consequently our only source of information has been from the owners themselves. In order to get as much information as possible a list of "AI," the vessels which were "reported lost" and whose whereabouts subsequent to Dunkirk were unknown (see copy attached) was circulated to the C. in C. Nore, C. in C. Portsmouth, and the (1502) 28899/1063 1,500,000 9/39 JC&SLtd V.A. Dover.
