25 First Lieut. then abandoned Alice and took his crew and Major De Haviland (wounded) and 4. soldiers to Kaap Falga where 1st. Lieut. Alice took command. Major De. Havilland of G.H.Q came on board with instructions for Kaap Falga to go to sea 25 and try and intercept a destroyer so that he could report by m/t to the War Office the seriousness of the situation. No. Destroyer would stop so Kaap Falga returned to the Downs and reported arrival. Then to Dover where stores were cleared by 09.00 1st. Kaap Falga's engines were badly coked up and in attempting to return to Dunkirk at 22.00 1st. they overheated to such an extent that the Ship could not make suffient speed to reach Dunkirk by 03.00 2nd. the latest hour that ships had been ordered to stay off Dunkirk. Due to the possibility of this defect Kaap Falga was not used on the night of June 2nd. the last night of the evacuation. Sailed for Poole 14.30/3 arrived 12.00/5 PACIFIC A Lieut.Comdr. C.J.Skrine R.N. Lieut. Triscott R.N.R. Sat.25th. May Crews for Dutch Skoots proceeded from ortsmouth to Poole where they arrived about noon and were detached for these vessels. Pacific proceeded at 14.00 leaving discharged dutch crew at Brownses Island. Was ordered to anchor at Yarmouth for the night. Sun. 26th. May. Weighed at 0.430 and proceeded for Portsmouth Harbour at 09.3.0 Being Senior officer of the Party I went ashore and arranged for stores and swinging etc. No sailing orders were obtainable until about 19.00 when we were ordered to complete swinging as soon as possible and sail at once for Newhaven. Accordingly sailed at dark with Amazone Atlantic Zeus & Pascholl in company (wega and San Antonio) has broken down) Monday 27th. May. Arrived off Newhaven at 04.00 and was ordered to anchor outside Lay at anchor all day awaiting orders. At dark received orders to sail for downs in company with a party of skoots that had previously arruved Newhaven. Weighed and Proceeded Tues. 28th. May Arrived Dover about 08.00 and berthed alongside 09.00. Went ashore and having ascertained the possible nature of the operation made arrangements for sandbags first aid outfits etc., to be supplied to my party of Skoots by noon However an air raid warning intervened and none of these stores had been received 13.00 received orders to sail forthwith. Sailed about 13.00 and took over a large lifeboat at sea from one of the slower skoots who was dropping behind. Pacific gradually overhauled the other four skoots and I think was the first of this party to reach La Panne. From No. 6 E Buoy we proceeded at slow speed 180° straight for the beach where in answer to our hail a shout was raised by the soldiers on the beach. The intention waswas to turn to Port and anchor off. However partly due to the fact that the larger ships were closer in than I anticipated but mainly due to my leadsman failing to obtain any sounding at all we grounded on a bank of sand before we had turned 90° This occured at 23.00 We sent the large Lifeboat ashore with 3 of our 5 hands and instructed them to take off men to other ships as with the wind blowing inshore it was not certain that we should get off, With the remaining two hands we laid out a kedge on our Port quarter. By going full astern and heaving on the kedge we got afloat when the tide rose at 02.00 29th. May. The ships lifeboat and skiff was then sent inshore and 1 officer and 7 men were brought off to Pacific before the boats lost touch with her in the dark They did howver bring several par ies off to other ships. Verbal orders had been received before leaving Dover to leave shore before03.30 being anxious to recover boats and men Pacific remained inshore till daylight finally sailing at 04.30 when it seemed liekly that the boats and crews had been embarked by other ships. Rerurned to Dover by route Y arriviving about 16.30 and disembarked troops. No orders were immediately available but verbal orders were subsequently received to embark water and provisions and sail about 22.00 Application was made for the balance of complument and I was informed that I should be sent 3 hnds from Montvera. These did not arrive until 02.40 at which time Pacific sailed for Dunitirk. 30th. May. The morning of 30th May was misty at about 08.20 when crossing Le Dyck bank there was a violent underwater explosion about two cables on the Starboard bow No aircraft was about and it is supposed that it was a torpedo which had exploded on the Bank. No vessel was in sight Arrived off the beach 09.00 about 1 mile E of Dunkirk and anchored close in. We had no boat of our own but collected two from a skoot that was just leaving, conditions as regards surf were pretty good but boats very waterlogged and no boat was obtainable all day. By 16.00 my crew were exhausted by pulling those boats in and out from the hore all as I had 30 Officers and 620 men aboard I decided to sail. We might have had many more in half the time if a motor boat had been available. Accordingly sailed at 16.00 When crossing the Inner Ratel Bank was attacked by by two of a flight of three fighters with machine guns. They scored a few hits on the ship and injured nobody. Had nothing but a pistol with which to reply.

Dynam. 311. 27 FROM Commander in Command Mine Recovery Flotilla, 27 DATE 10th June, 1940 North Shields. TO Naval Officer in Charge, Ramsgate copy F. Cape. Hund remon REPORT OF OPERATION ON NIGHT OF 3/4 June, 1940 Sir, I have the honour to report the operation of the 5 scoots under my command on the night of 3/4 June. 2. On being refused permission to take the drifters of the 2nd M.R. Flotilla, I was offered command of the 5 Dutch Scoots, "PASCHOLL", "HORNSRUG", "REIGER", "LENA" and "BORNRIF". 3. There was little time to make any arrangements and comminication was difficult. I made some rough orders on a signal pad and sent them round by the motor boat which took me on board "PASCHOLL". 4. Under way about 1600 for RV at N. G odwin. "REIGER" had meanwhile run aground on the Quern on a falling tide and was out of it. 5. Proceeded in company without incident, timing my speed to reachlic. 12, buoy Dunkerque at 2230. 6. My orders were to use Western pier Nouvean avant Port and on rounding Western mole I headed into the avant Port. I was unable to find enough water anywhere in this area so I came astern and headed for West pier of the main harbour, which I could seeagainst the burning town. 7. go alongside West side of West Pier. They got their Meanwhile 2 of my ships passed me and tried to bows up to pier but had a job getting their stern to and "LENA" which was the outside ship of the two grounded just off the pier. I got alongside east side and "HORNSRUG" came alongside me. 8. very glad to find Commander H.R. TroMp, who said he had The Pier was full of French troops and I was appointed himself Piermaster. He and I were unable to get a tug to pluck "LENA" off and finally had to take the men off and leave her. meanwhile 9. loading the ship with men and "HORNSRUG" was Lieut. Wise, R.N.V.R., and his Sub Lieut. were also loading across my decks. There was a destroyer escort vessel alongside each side astern of us. Commander of Tromp had complete control of the situation in spite and having almost lost his voice, and without his help judgment the loading of 5 ships at once would have been difficult.

Dynami but 105 SUBJECT: REPORT ON PROCEEDINGS DURING EVACUATION. FROM: LIEUTENANT T. JOHNSTON, R.N. COMMANDING OFFICER, H.M.S. PASCHOLL. DATE: 6th June 1940. TO: VICE ADMIRAL, DOVER. I have the honour to report that I sailed from Portsmouth at approximately 3200 27th May 1940, in command of the Dutch skoot PASCHOLL, arriving at Dover about 0900 28th May 1940. 2. I left Dover at 1400 28th May, for the beach off Le Panne via route Y with orders to arrive about 2200 to take off troops from the beaches and transfer them to Destroyers, endeavouring to return to the Downs by dawn. 3. As the PASCHOLL was SO much slower than other ships in the Convoy, I was obliged to leave the route given and proceed across the Banks, by SO doing arriving of Ia Panne at 2230, 28th May. 4. Approximately 300 troops were embarked and transferred to the WOLSEY(?), by this time it was 0400 29th May, so I returned as ordered to the Downs. On arrival at the Downs I was ordered by an examination steamer to proceed to Deal where I arrived about 1200 29th May. 5. Having received no further orders I proceeded to Dover where after storing ship I was ordered to return to Le Panne. 6. I sailed from Dover at 1900 29th May, and proceeded to IQ Panne arriving about 0230 30th May where I embarked 400 British and French troops and sailed for Ramsgate at 1030 30th May. During the embarkation only two enemy aircraft were sighted and they did not bomb in the vicinity of the PASCHOLL. 7. On entering the main channel of Le Panne, I was shelled for half an hour by shore batteries at Nieuport, and was obliged to steam across the sendbanks to get out of range. About 1400 I was attacked by a Dornier bomber which bombed and machine-gunned without more success than two slight casualties. I arrived at Ramsgate about 2000 30th May. 8. At approximately 2200 30th May, the whole crew of the PASCHOLL were relieved and Lieutenant Donaldson, R.N.R., took command. 9. At 0700 on 1st June, I took command of Drifter JACKEVE and proceeded to Dunkirk. During the outward passage, I was bombed several times and on arrival off the entrance to Dunkirk harbour at about 1250 1st June, was attacked heavily by dive bombers. The MOSQUITO who was quite close at the time was hit and abandoned, 80 I proceeded to pick up survivors.

Dynam 196. 108 107 June 7th, 1940. Supplementary to a brief report given to the Resident N.O. at Poole - From the 0.0. H.H.S. "Pascholl". The above ship returned from La Panne to Sheerness on Sunday 2nd June. Her Captain immediately left her to return to his duties in Naval Control, Ramagate. At 1830, on instructions from the Commodore's Office, I reported to Admiral Taylor and without further notice, was told by him to take command of the above ship, and take her to Dunkirk. There being no routing orders available I was told instead to await the departure of H.N.S. "Reiger" and sail in company to Ramsgate. "Reiger" was unable to sail until 1630 and Ramsgate was reached at 2300. To anchored and went ashore for instructions which were to our intense disappointment; we were to be off for the night and await further instructions. With the exception of two of the ship's company, all on board complained that they were reliefs for the original crew and asked to be relieved, having done one or maybe two trips across already. It proved impossible to do this for them until Tuesday morning, but after they had been allocated definite jobs and posts during the operations and had been given a little verbal encouragement they settled down, gave of their best and did their duty in traditional manner. 2. At 1430 Monday, 3rd June, I was advised that the "Pascholl" would be salling as flagship with four other Schults. At 1500 Commander Hammond, R.N. cnme on board with his navigator, Lieutenant de Mornay, H.M. With great tact and understanding they assured me that they were largely passengers and in no way intended to interfere with, or supercede the Captain. by somewhat natural disappointment at the apparent loss, in spite of these assurances, of the opportunity of conducting the operations on my own initiative, was more than offset by company, guidance and encouragement they afforded to the two Officers of the ship. 5. We sailed at 1600 and promptly loat one of the five ships - "Reiger" which,, to Commander Hamond's lurid disgust, went on the putty (Quern Sand). Overtaking a convoy of wierd, but gallant little French fishermen, we arrived in Dunkirk harbour at 3500 after a most tame passage. The town was blasing furiously and presented a trult memorable spectacle. The harbour Was congested, sonté of the ships there being wrecked, and in cases already ablase. Difficult navigation was intensified by our not being able to find the Nouveau Avant Port (no proper plan of the harbour being available ), our perigrinations nearly putting us on the putty twice. In desperation we went alongaide the Packet boat quay of. the inner harbour, secured and got ladders aboard. Commander Troup, waiting on the quay immediately asked our capacity, and I foolishly but optimistically replied "Oh, between 500 and 1,000% Poilus in reasonable order commeneed to invade the ship and were embarked in an orderly fashion, each mon being disarmed before being allowed to descend into the hold. The work of embarkation was su ervised by the First Licutenant (Sub Lieut. St. Aubin, R.N.V.R.) in & most creditable manner
