Arrived Ramsgate. 2nd June 2030 Left Ramsgate. Helmsman injured. 2115 Returned to Ramagate. Left Ramsgate. 2200 Engine very troublesome. 3rd June 0300 Between V and W buoys sighted "convoy" returning. (1) Decided to return to Ramsgate. 0900 Arrived Ramsgate. Nil. VIEWFINDER M/Y (Owner, L.A. London). S/Lt. F.N. Dann, R.N.V.R. 1930 28th May Left Sheerness for Dover, leading a convoy of 6 yachts all towing whalers. Other convoys followed astern. 29th May 0130 Arrived Dover. 0600 Left Dover leading a column of 5 yachts viz:- Advance, Hanora, Bobeli, Elizabeth Green and one other (which however turned back). 0700 Joined by the M/B Reda making a total of 6 vessels in company. 1400ca Off Gravelines, machine gunned from the air. 1500ca All six vessels arrived off La Panne. Towed whalers full of troops to off- lying ships. 1830 The Viewfinder was dragged aground by Belgian soldiers and became a total loss. 1900 S/Lt. Dann, took off troops in whalers to the M/S Lydd. The Hanora fouled a her screw and was abandoned. The Elizabeth Green took off the Hanora's officer and crew and towed them and Viewfinder's whalers to the Lydd. S/Lt. Dann continued to ferry troops in a whaler. 2030 S/Lt. Dann handed his charts to the Reda, and embarked in the Lydd. 2100 The Lydd proceeded. 30th May 0510 The Lydd arrived Margate. Nil [s/Lt. Sir, I have the honour to submit the report of proceedings of the "M" Drifters attached to Yarmouth Base (H.M.S. "Watchful") whilst employed on Operation "Dynamo". 30.5.40. 2345. Flotilla sailed Yarmouth for Ramsgate, Report by Sub,Lieut. F.N.Dann (Contd) 570 540 1900 Took charge of empty whaler, made up scratch crew of two ratings and one soldier and continued to ferry troops from beach to motor boats. 2030 Many badly wounded men taken aboard H.M.S.Lydd no skilled help available. Went aboard and did what I could with others until ship reached Margate. Handed charts to Reda. 1d May 30th Early morning landed from H.M.S.Lydd at Margate. R Sent on to Chatham. May 31st Returned to H.M.S.Wildfire Sheermess. June 1st Assisted at Sheerness with supplies and victualling. 1700 Left for Ramsgate in M.Y. Dianthus. Engine giving much trouble.
