of the 19th instant dealing with the services of this Institution'
Life-boats in connexion with the evacuation of Dunkirk, and to
enclose for your information copies of reports made by the
Honorary Secretary and Coxswain of the Margate and Ramsgate
Life-boats. These were the only two Life-boats which operated
in the evacuation with their own crews; the other Life-boats
employed being manned by Naval ratings.

Sirs,
On Friday, 31st May, we left Dagenham at 10 a.m. for
Gravesend, arriving at 11.30 a.m. We picked up a pilot and
left Gravesend at 11.40 a.m. for Southend. We arrived at Southend
at 1 p.m., leaving again at 1.35 p.m. for Ramsgate. On our way
we assisted the S.T. "DUKE" to tow the sailing barge "Asnington"
to Ramsgate. We arrived at Ramsgate at 6 p.m., and entered the
Harbour at 6.45 p.m. We then towed the barge "Snowdon" from the
east side of the harbour to the west side, moored her, and ran back
to the ast side for further orders.
Steam was ordered for 5 a.m. on Saturday, 1st June, and
acting upon instructions received we loaded stores and gear.
At 9.30 a.m. we left Ramsgate Harbour, picking up the train ferry
"Fishbourne". Taking her in tow we proceeded to Dunkirk. We had
arrived at about 2 miles off Dunkirk when the Commander of the
"Fishbourne" ordered us to alter the course and tow back to
Ramsg te Harbour, which we did,, arriving back at Ramsgate at 7.30
a.m. on the 2nd June. While towing the "Fishbourne" to and from
Dunkirk, all the ropes which we had aboard the S.T. "Princess" were
broken.
On Sunday, 2nd June we were in Ramsgate Harbour awaiting orders.
On Monday, 3rd June steam was ordered for 6 a.m., and we left
Ramsgate Harbour at 11.15 a.m. We proceeded to the Downs, picking
up s.t. "Contest" as escort to Southend. We arrived at Southend at
6.45 p.m., cleared and proceeded to Dagenham, where we arrived at
9.30 p.m.

Sirs,
We left Dagenham at 10.30 a.m., May 31st, arriving at
Gravesend at 11.10 a.m. where we picked up as Pilot. We then
proceeded to Southend, arriving there at 12.30 p.m.
Acting on orders from the Admiralty, we put two hands aboard
the Sailing Barge "Ashingdon" and took her in tow, and proceeded
to Ramsgate Harbour, arriving off the Harbour about 6.40 p.m.
Acting upon instructions received from the authorities, we left
the S.B. "Ashi ngdon" at anchor in the downs below the Harbour, and
took the tug into the Harbour about 8 p.m. to await further orders.
On Saturday morning, 1st June, we had orders to stand by at
daylight, and received further orders to take stores, water and
armoury together with some amunition, aboard, and stand by to tow
the Ferry Boat ishbourne' to Dunkirk. We had four Naval ratings
put aboard and at 9.20 a.m., together with the S.T. "Princess",
we took the F.B. "Fishbourne" in tow. After towing for about 70
minutes, we put our rope into the S.T. "Princess" and then went
ahead of the S.T. Princess with our two ropes in her head. About
11.20 a.m., owing to the starboard rope of the S.T. Princess"
breaking, we were forced to slip our rope to enable them to get
another rope aboard the Ferry Boat; the S.T. Princess" then came
alongside and took our place.
After steaming for about 12 hours, we were ordered up alongside
the Ferry Boat where the Commander gave us orders to turn back and
find the Steam Tug "Sun III" and four Sailing Barges, and also keep
in contact with him. We sighted the Steam Tug and Sailing Barges
off our starboard bow, and went over and took the S.B. "Haste-Away"
ying
from S.T. "Sun III" and left him with the other three. Owing to
bad visability and the difficulty in keeping the Sailing Barges in
tow, we lost contact with our other gugs and the Ferry Boat. After
the S.B. "Ada Mary" had broken adrift twice from the "Sun III", I
decided to keep her in my tow, proceeding to our destination with
two barges each.

At. about 2.40 p.m., when approximately 2 miles north of
Dunkirk (according to the reckoning of the Master of the S.T. "Sun III)
we found a violent air raid in progress, with bombing off our star-
board side, during which our own fighting aircraft split up the
enemy craft. At the same time we sighted a life boat adrift with
about 40 English soldiers aboard and one Naval rating. We picked up
20 soldiers and left the rest aboard the S.T. "Sun III". Things were
looking very bad, and upon the advice of an officer in charge of the
soldiers, and owing to the fact that we did not know the exact
whereabouts of our destination - having lost contact with our
Commander who was abroad the Ferry Boat, we steamed about for an
hour and then followed the S.T. "Sun III". About 4.20 p.m. we
sighted amother life boat which turned out to be from the destroyer
"Basilisk" which had been sunk in an air raid off Dunkirk Harbour.
There were 12 survivors aboard - 11 sailors and 1 midshipmany whom

Sir,
In reference to your letter of the 28th. June requesting a
report from me as Master of H.M. Transport "MONA'S QUEEN" when on
her last voyage from Dover to Dunkirk.
I joined the "MONA'S QUEEN" on the 28th. of May. On the
evening of that date, I received orders to leave Dover in the early
morning of the 29th. to carry fresh water to Dunkirk and return with
troops. Everything was uneventful until we reached to within about
half a mile off Dunkirk, when the ship was mined and sank within two
minutes, the survivors being rescued by the destroyer "VANQUISHER".
With reference to the request for names of Officers and personnel
who should be recommended, I can only say that the conduct of all
survivors was exemplary.

survivors. It appears that H. Craine, Chief Cook, showed the
greatest courage and disregard for his own safety when noticing that
Mr. Morgan, the Chief Steward, was unable to get away from the ship
through injuries, he went back and rescued him knowing that the ship

In answer to your letter, herewith are details of the part
played by the "MONA'S QUEEN" in the recent operations off the Dutch,

Belgian and French coasts. The facts and circumstances are very plainly
remembered by me, although I may not be quite certain as to the exact
dates, I think I won't be very far off the mark.
TOTAL
Firstly, our experiences started when we left Dover for
List
Rotterdam on the 14th. May intending to evacuate Dutch troops etc.
Unfortunately we did not succeed in that because when we arrived at the
mouth of the River Maas, the place was a raging inferno, even the river
was afire with oil from destroyed tanks. We did our best but were
beaten back. German bombers were overhead and tried to get us, but did
not succeed as we HERE were very often enveloped in dense and choking
smoke. Finally we were ordered to return to Dover and arrived there on
the evening of the 15th. May. We left Dover again that night for Ostend
and arrived off Ostend following morning, the authorities there would
not let us in and we had to anchor. Whilst laying at anchoré we were
attacked twice with bombers, but with our Lewis guns and the guns of a
small Dutch vessel we beat them off. We entered Ostend about noon in
spite of the fact that magnetic mines had been dropped in the harbour.
They had swept up some of them, not all. In Ostend we embarked
British, Dutch, French and Belgian refugees, men, women and children.
We left Ostend about 5-30 p.m. (16th) and arrived Folkestone at 10 p.m.
Owing to the trouble with passports etc. we did not get away from that
port until noon (17th.) when we were ordered to Southampton. When we
arrived at Netley Anchorage, we got orders to fill up with fuel and water
and return to Ostend and to call at Dover for stores, arriving in Dover
on the 18th. The Ostend trip was cancelled as the Germans had already
got there. Then on the 19th. we went to Boulogne and as far as I can
remember that was the night that G.H.Q. at Boulogne was bombed and we
took home, amongst others, the Duke of Gloucester and his staff. The
Duke was wounded. Arrived back at Dover on the 20th. We then loaded
Canadian troops and stores for Dunkirk, but after they had been aboard
all day that sail was off. Then we loaded about 400 tons of all kinds
of ammunition and embarked the Irish and Welsh Guards, also a demolition
squad of R.E's for Boulogne. It took fourteen hours at Dover, with
cranes to load the ammunition, but with the work of my crew and a few
willing soldiers we had the stuff landed in three hours. Then we
embarked as many troops as we could carry (amongst them there were many
wounded). Units from all Allies, British, French, etc., also women and
children and we left Boulogne just as the Germans were coming in. We
had only left, in fact were between the Pier Heads, when a squadron of
Heinkels dived on to the berth which we had just vacated and practically
blew it to pieces. However, we got back to Dover safely and
disembarked our troops. On 24th. May we were ordered to go to anchorage
in the Downs for a little rest as Dover harbour was getting rather
congested. We were at anchor in the Downs on Saturday evening. Next

to you the devotion to duty of the Chief Engineer of this
ship, who lost his life when the ship was sunk.

In reply to your letter of 7th August; we have
pleasure in enclosing report received from Captain Clarke,
Master of H.M.T. "Princess Maud", on the evacuation of Dunkirk.
We have previously written to you in connection with the work
performed by Captain W.H. Hughes of H.M.T. "Scotia".
The "Princess Maud" sustained considerable damage
through enemy action, and as you will note, lost four of her
crew. It is regretted that Captain Clarke's report should be
so late in coming to hand, but this is explained by the fact
that he is a man of very retiring nature, and it was somewhat
difficult to get him to tell us of the good work done by his ship.
The devotion to duty of the Chief Engineer, Nunns,
when the vessel was shelled in way of the engine room, leaving
a hole, as the Captain describes "about a yard square", has
impressed us very much, and we have pleasure in drawing your
attention to this.
We have already written you regarding the work performed
by the "Princess Maud" and "Duke of York" at the evacuation from
St. Valery.
