Sir,
I have the honour to bring to your notice the
recent conduct of Shipwright 2nd class (Pensioner) Charles
Greenwood, Official No. P/M.8899. This man was employed
on equipping various small craft for the recent evacuation
of our forces from Flanders, and realising the intention
of these preparations, volunteered to serve in one of the
vessels in order that he might be available to make temporary
repairs in the event of enemy action.
2. I submitted his request to the Commander-in-Chief's
Staff by telephone and arrangements were made to send him in
first boat sailing.
3. Greenwood made all his own arrangements, providing
the necessary equipment for effecting small repairs and
reporting to the Commander-in-Chief's Office as ordered.
Greenwood proceeded to the coast of France in the yacht
4. From an interview on his return I understand
"Encore" and was able to repair at least one boat and to
assist in the rescue of several of the Expeditionary "Robert Force.
During operations he was transferred to the Drifter
Clive" and eventually was landed from her in Ramsgate.
5. and that he was sent on this operation entirely to
