continued from dawn Friday to dusk Friday. Stores
being swamped had nothing to eat. Only water was
in few bottles filled at pier.
On last trip rising tide and wind swamped boat,
carried it broadside on. Crew abandoned boat and
swam ashore. Other boats could not get near enough
to get a line across. About 60 carried each trip.
Continual bombing all day. Smith found a cance,
floated it, paddled with piece of driftwood to
Walmer Lifeboat. Others walked along beach to
pier and boarded destroyer. Beach littered with
guns and equipment and fairly crowded with
soldiers, mostly French. On pier shrapnel was
bursting over, marching troops several casualties.
Saw ship hit by bomb in distance in La Pame
direction. Saw 5 or 6 dive bombers brought down
by destroyers. A number of boats working off
beach all day.

At least fourteen other motor boats¹ were lost by misadventure, e.g. engine
failure, grounding, swamping, damaging rudders and/or propellers on floating
or submerged wreckage, or breaking adrift and being lost when on tow. The
seaplane tender No. 291 managed to get back to England in spite of the damage
she had sustained, but was unable to take any further part in "Dynamo".
Conflicting news of La Panne
Meanwhile, as the tows of boats (which Rear-Admiral Wake-Walker now
saw for the first time at 1900 on the 31st May), arrived off Dunkirk they were
directed to the beaches by Lt. Cdr. Wynne-Edwards, first from M.T.B.68 and
later at about 2100, from M.A/S.B. 6. It was found, however, that in the
growing darkness, and with no lights to help them, there was a tendency for
the boats to stop at the first place they came to where other craft were assembled.
At about 1930 the Codrington, then off, Bray, was warned by Rear-Admiral
Wake-Walker to send on the boats detailed for La Panne, but the bulk of them
did not get further than Bray.
The night was dark, and Rear-Admiral Wake-Walker stayed off La Panne,
"wondering how things were going. Everything was black, ships and boats
and shore showed no lights", although arrangements had been made for a light
to be shown to seaward to guide boats inshore. Shelling was continuous and
seemed to be falling among the ships at the anchorage. News was conflicting;
a message from the shore said that thousands of men were waiting but there
were no boats, while messages came from ships that their boats could find no
one on the beach. the ships and the boats were there, and the troops
ashore, and one could do no more.
I do not know to this day", says Rear-
Admiral Wake-Walker, what really took place there".
La Panne beach 31st May/1st June
It is not easy to discover what happened at La Panne, but the following
account, based on a report by Lt. Cdr. J. W. McClelland, R.N., who with a
party of signalmen reached La Panne in the minesweeper Gossamer at 1930 on
the 30th May, gives the main course of events. He was S.N.O., La Panne, for
the seven hours prior to its abandonment as a place of embarkation at about
0200 on the 1st June.
About 1600 on May 31st Captain Tennant, who had been visiting Lord Gort
at La Panne, decided to return to Dunkirk, but he first instructed Lt. Cdr.
McClelland to arrange for the evacuation of Lord Gort and his staff, to carry
out the duties of S.N.O., La Panne³, and to join Major General B. L. Mont-
gomery, then in command of 2nd Corps.
At that time, says Lt. Cdr. McClelland, an enemy battery near Nieuport,
assisted by 2 kite balloons, had found the range of the beach and the off lying-
ships, which had accordingly withdrawn to the westward. Rear-Admiral Wake-
Walker asked for the balloons to be shot down, and aircraft came over for that
purpose; at times the balloons were hauled down-but they always re-ap-
peared.

LOG OF "LETITIA"
"LETITIA" was an ex-naval harbour launch conversion, 52-ft.
long, 12-ft. beam and 4-ft.9-ins. draught, schooner rigged, fitted
with twin screws driven by Thornycroft R.A.4 petrol-paraffin engine.
She attended the Pavillon d'Or Rally at Liege, Belgium, in
July 1939 her number being 73. After the Rally she returned to
her moorings in Chichester Canal just before war broke out and was
laid up there until requisitioned by the Ministry of Shipping on
the 30th of May 1940 for the Dunkirk Evacuation.

Dover abeam at 6.35 # a.m. Reported to the Admiralty the
arrival of the "LETITIA". Sub-Lieutenant and three sailors
came on board and took over. Proceeded alongside oil wharf
to get more fuel on board and alongside another wharf to get
a machine gun and ammunition on board. Taking out ship's
masts and putting on quay and fixing machine gun on deck - -
all ready to sail at 2.30 p.m. Orders came to proceed
outside harbour at 4 p.m. to the Tug "SUN XV" to be towed
across in company with other yachts. Three other yachts
make fast astern of us, under way 6.35 p.m. Engines running
at half-speed to ease the strain of the tow ropes. Slight
swell. The tow ropes of two of the yachts broke and they
were told to proceed on under own power. Arrived off Dunkin
at 11.30 p.m. and cast off from Tug. Proceeded into Dunkir
past the Mole, and up the Canal for about 2 miles. Moored
alongside the quay and proceeded to take troops on board.
Could find no Englishmen so took on board 40 Frenchmen.

Re: 'FALCON 11'.
At the time small vessels were required for the
evacuation of the B.E.F. at Dunkirk, I offered my vessel,
Friday
the above-named, and on May 31st arranged with a crew of
local yachtsmen for the vessel to be taken to Dover or
across the channel. A message was received in the evening
of this day that no more vessels were to proceed, but on
Satus Saturday day
the following day (June 1st) orders were received at
Chichester that vessels had to proceed, and as there was
no time again to collect the crew, she sailed under a crew
detailed by the Chichester Yacht Co. She was proceeding
to Dover but, probably owing to the crew being unaccustomed
to the particular vessel, some trouble was experienced and
she put into Shoreham.
The following Sunday she was taken from Shoreham to
Newhaven and went across the channel to St. Valerie. From
accounts they had a pretty grim time, and four bombs exploded
near the vessel which, fortunately, only resulted in a burst
fuel tank containing 260 gallons of Diesel oil. This narrow
escape was later confirmed, quite independently, by a
Lieutenant of the R.N.V.R. who, prior to the war, had a
yacht at Chichester and knew the 'Falcon 11'.
Returning from St. Valerie to Newhaven the vessel was
taken over by the naval authorities, and is now doing routine

12 inches, slight list, tide turned and we floated about 6 a.m.

Piloted to bar by yacht cleared bar 8 a.m. Steered S.13 E to
Bullock Patch and NAB.S. 62 E to Boulder By and Owers, passed
Owers 10 a.m. streamed log S.85. E.
Some drifting timber loose and cans passed, and school of
porpoises 3.45 p.m. Log showing 44 shifted to N.25.E passed
Beachy Head about 4 miles off. Due east and passed "Royal
Sovereign Lightship". Passed about 1 ² miles inside "Sovereign"
4.30 p.m. Engine speeds between 850 to 950. Gave my log
reading at intervals to "Falcon" "Letitia" and "Idaho".
East wind increased after rounding Beachy Head and met strong
head swell. "Warrior" running very easily and quite comfortable,
considerable amount of flotsam everywhere, inner tubes, boxes
and timber - had to keep a sharp look out. Swell increased,
saw right under "Letitia" several times.
5.15 p.m. noticed "Idaho" sheer hard to Port, eased engines and
watched her for a few minutes, decided she was out of control,
and blew for rounding to port. Rounded and drew alongside.
Much crashing from galley when getting round, owing to very
heavy rolling. Got hands to pack everything possible, nursed
"Warrior" to leeward of "Idaho" and slowly closed to. Managed
had been pulled in showing 57 miles.

adrift, swung back, hit stern sheets and broke
main feed pipe. Proceeded on reserve tank,
repeatedly filling from main tank. Arrived. off
beach near Gravelines and ran gauntlet of fire
from beach as far as Dunkirk and on to Bray. Filled
boat by grounding and pulling in soldiers - -
continued from dawn Friday to dusk Friday. Stores
being swamped had nothing to eat. Only water was
in few bottles filled at pier.
On last trip rising tide and wind swamped boat,
carried it broadside on. Crew abandoned boat and
swam ashore. Other boats could not get near enough
to get a line across. About 60 carried each trip.
Continual bembing all day. Smith found a cance,
floated it, paddled with piece of driftwood to
Walmer Lifeboat. Others walked along beach to
pier and boarded destroyer. Beach littered with
guns and equipment and fairly crowded with th
soldiers, mostly French. On pier shrapnel was
bursting over, marching troops several casualties.
Saw ship hit by bomb in distance in La Pame
direction. Saw 5 or 6 dive bombers brought down
by destroyers. A number of boats working off
beach all day.
