return as soon as she was loaded.

westward in search of troops.

loads of troops and put the boats in
tow, astern of Feasible. Proceed
homewards. Embarked a rating from a
water-logged whaler.

Sighted N. Goodwins. 3 miles from
Ramsgate Letitia slipped and made off.
1 mile from Ramsgate, Ben and Lucy
fouled her propeller. A launch came
off and 100 troops were transferred. (2)
Ben & Lucy and Feasible anchored.

going to Dunkirk, we went with
them.

loads, and towed a lifeboat full of

Ben and Lucy]. The "trawler" was
towing another "trawler", [i.e. the
drft. Feasible] which in turn was
towing 2 lifeboats - one of them
being swamped and the other having
2 sailors on board.

Shortly, the Renown made fast astern of
Letitia, the rope between the
2 cockle boats being about 3½ fathoms,

An explosion took place and a hail of
wood splinters came down on Letitia's
deck.
"In the pitch dark we could see
nothing, and after the explosion we
heard nothing, and we could do
nothing, except pull in the tow rope
which was just as we passed it to the
Renown about KF. hour before...."
The Renown had been blown to pieces.

Letitia left the tow and proceeded to
Ramsgate. Thence she sailed to
Southend.

On approaching Dunkirk roads, the
flotilla, attacked by about 60
bombers, was ordered to scatter.
The Lord Hood was severely damaged
by a near miss and had 1 killed and
2 wounded. She was abandoned, and her
crew were picked up by the Alcmaria.
Later, she was towed to Ramsgate.
British fighters drove off the
bombers, but the flotilla came under
fire from shore batteries.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the report of proceedings of the
employed on Operation "Dynamo".
"M" Drifters attached to Yarmouth Base (H.M.S. "Watchful") whilst
30.5.40. 2345.
Flotilla sailed Yarmouth for Ramsgate,
31.5.40. 1500.
Arrived Ramsgate and received orders to proceed to
Dunkirk forthwith to assist in evacuation of troops.
31.5.40. 1515.
Flotilla sailed for Dunkirk.
1900.
On approaching Dunkirk Roads, Flotilla vas subjected to
intense bombing attack by about sixty onemy bombers.
Consequently, I gave the order to "scatter".
Drifter "Lord Hood" was severaly damaged by & "near riss*,
Three casualties, one seaman being killed outright, and two
wounded. I took "Feasible" alongside "Lord Hood* and
removed the C.Bs, the Ship's Company having been picked up by
"Alcmaria".
After ascertaining that nothing further could
be done and nobody left on board, I ordered flotilla to take up
formation again and proceeded into Dunicirk. bombers
had in the meantime been driven off by British Pighters Sub
ships coming under heavy gunfire from shore batteries.
2000.
Secured alongside North Pier, Dunkirk with twelve ships
and proceeded to embark troops.
2030.
Orders were received from a Commander R.N. ashore to
discontinue embarkation and proceed out of harbour to piok up
troops from North Beaches.
Five ships, being already filled
with troops, were ordered back to Ramagate,
The remaining
ships followed me out of harbour to the Beaches,
From then
onwards, ships worked independently, returning to Ramagate then
full and back to Beaches for more, This continued throughout
the night and the bllowing day and night of lat/2nd June when all
drifters were ordered by the Naval Officer in Charge, Ramagate to
leave Dunkirk by 0300, 2nd June, empty or full. Plotilla
anchored in Ramsgate Roads awaiting further instructions.
4.6.40.

"Alcmaria" with "Genius" in tow and "Swift Wing* with
"Feasible" in tow, under the command of Sub. Ideutenant 5. N. Mann,
R.N.V.R., were ordered to proceed to Yarmouth.

All ships received a certain amount of superficial damage due
to splinters and concussion which in several instances put the degmasing
circuits out of action.
Remarks.
I cannot pay too high a tribute to all the Officers and ships
companies concerned. During the course of the operation, the personnal
were on continuous duty for more than 36 hours during which time 70 were
being exposed to constant attack by enemy bombers, shore batteries, mohine
guns and enemy M.T.B's. flying the White Ensign.
Navigation, especially at night, was extremely hazardous is no
charts of the locallity were available at such short notice, and 1 consider
a splendid example of team work, commonsense and initiative was displayed
by the Skippers in bringing all ships back to Ramagate din conclusion.
It is very hard to pick out any individual for special mention
where all did so well.
I regret to have to report the undermentioned casualties which
occurred in "Lord Hood".

Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
"M" DRIFTERS attached to H.M.S. WATCHFUL - Lieutenant Alexander Harper-

Thirteen Drifters were used in the operation, taking
troops from Dunkirk Harbour and off the beaches. They were
continually being bombed and also shelled by shore
batteries. Three ships of the flotilla were put out of
action by near misses. The remainder all received
superficial damage from splinters and concussion.
Recommendations.

we then went to General GEORGES' Headquarters, at
BRIARE, where we continued the discussion. I pointed
out that the length of the proposed line was some 150
kilometres which would require at least fifteen Divisions.
I gathered from both General WEYGAND and General GEORGES
that they did not consider the BRITTANY project to be &
feasible proposition with the forces that now remained
available in the Tenth French Army including the B.B.F.
General WEYGAND referred to the project as "romantic",
and said that it had been adopted without military advice.
General WEYGAND stated, however, that, since the Allied
Governments had issued instructions for the defence of
BRITTANY he must carry out their orders. Consequently,
in consultation with General GEORGES, he had drawn up
instructions for the participation of the B.B.F. in the
scheme. Being under the impression that H.M. Government
had approved this plan, I signed the document which
prescribed the role of B.B.F. in it. (Copy attached at
Appendix 'A').
6. WEYGAND had described to me, I immediately sent a telegram
In view of the gravity of the situation which General

7. I then returned to my Headquarters at LE MANS, arriving
at 1615 hours. I spoke to the C.I.C.S. by telephone at
1630 hours and explained the situation. I asked whether
the BRITTANY scheme had H.M. Government's approval and told
him that both Generals WEYGAND and GEORGES appeared to
consider it impracticable with the force available. The
C.I.G.S. informed me that he knew nothing of the BRITTANY
Scheme, but said he would refer the matter to the Prime
Minister.
I told the C.I.G.S. that, in view of the general state
French Army, I considered that all further movement of
of disintegration which was beginning to spread in the
arrangements should be started for the evacuation of the
troops and material to France should be stopped, and that
B.E.F. from available Ports. The C.I.G.S. informed ne
that orders had already been issued to stop the dispatch of
further troops and material to France.

in the Bray and Malo sectors were being thinned out by movements westward
towards Dunkirk iteslf. This change of plan involved concentrating the special
tows and the minesweepers to which they were to transfer the troops, into the
stretch opposite the beach between Zuydcoote Sanatorium and one mile east
of La Panne¹, and also advancing the commencement of the operation by one
hour².
A risk was involved in this change of plan as the boat tows were not in com-
munication with the Vice-Admiral, and it would therefore be necessary for
minesweepers to see that the escorting M.A./S.B.'s shepherded the tows to the
new positions It had been explained to the Naval officers in each tow that
the minesweepers would be anchored so as to serve as guiding marks³.
" It was always impossible for me to do more than deal with the situation of
the moment", says Rear-Admiral Wake-Walker. "I did not know what ships
were coming or when-except for the pre-arranged plan of the sloops. Nor
was it possible for Dover to give me much information. Ships got back there,
unloaded, and were off again, the stream was constant but irregular and it was
not possible to see any way ahead. My policy was always to keep only sufficient
ships off the beaches and send all the others into Dunkirk, but the situation
changed continually."4
Small craft arrive in hundreds
It was in such circumstances that, at about 1900, Rear-Admiral Wake-
Walker had proceeded to Dunkirk in the Keith to see how the boat situation
was getting on. There he saw for the first time that strange procession of
craft of all kinds the story of which was to become famous-tugs, towing
dinghies, life-boats and all manner of pulling boats5-small motor yachts,
motor launches, drifters, Dutch skoots, Thames barges, fishing boats, pleasure
steamers⁶. This was indeed the first time that the small craft had come over
in hundreds⁷. Since noon Lt. Cdr. C. J. Wynne-Edwards, R.N. (of R.-A.
Dunkirk's staff), embarked in M.T.B.68, had been directing the tows to the
various beaches.

Later on 2nd June, on instructions from the N.O.I.C., the original crew took
charge of the Marsayru, but she did not, apparently, make a second trip to Dun-
kirk. Her skipper (G. D. Olivier) received the D.S.M. for his services, and her
engineer (C. Coggins) a mention in despatches.
The Cockle Bawley boats
Of the small craft that went over on this day, Admiral Ramsay speaks in
the following terms of the Cockle Bawley boats²:
"The conduct of the crews of these cockle boats was exemplary. They were all
volunteers who were rushed over to Dunkirk in one day, probably none of them
had been under gunfire before and certainly none of them under Naval discipline.
These boats were Thames estuary fishing boats which never left the estuary, and
only one of their crews had been further afield than Ramsgate before. In spite
of this fact perfect formation was maintained throughout the day and night under
the control of a Sub-Lieutenant R.N.V.R.³ in command of the Unit, and all orders
were carried out with great diligence even under actual shell fire and aircraft
attack."
One of these cockle boats, the Renown, was blown up by a mine while returning
to England disabled and in tow of the drifter Ben and Lucy. Her skipper,
W. H. Noakes, and his crew⁴ were killed. The Ben and Lucy had been towing
the drifter Feasible (disabled by a shell hit), 3 life-boats and the cockle boat
Letitia. At 0115 on the 1st June the Renown, by then disabled, attached
herself to this tow, but an hour later she was blown to pieces and a hail of wood
and splinters came down on the Letitia's deck. The Letitia's skipper (A. J.
Dench) says, In the pitch dark we could see nothing, and after the explosion
we hard nothing and we could do nothing, except pull in the tow rope, which
was just as we passed it to the Renown about 3 hour before.
French and Belgian ships arrive
Early on the 31st it became known that the Belgian Government were anxious
that several small Belgian fishing craft lying at Brixham should take part in
the evacuation and steps were taken to arrange this.
At 1335 the French destroyer Léopard routed from the Downs to Dunkirk
two French trawlers5, three French motor fishing vessels⁶, and ten Belgian
trawlers⁷.
The Belgian trawlers were under the orders of Pilote Malet; the remainder
of the ships under Lieutenant de vaisseau Drogou.
Other Allied ships that sailed for Dunkirk on this day were the French cargo
ships Ingénieur Cachin and Margaux, the trawlers Pierre et Marie, Emma and
Duperre, and the patrol vessel Diligente; the Belgian trawlers Lydie Suzanne
and Yvonne, and the drifters Gerard-Léon (H.64), Anne Marie and Thérèse
Compas. On her return journey the Pierre et Marie picked up 3 English sailors
from a drifting motor boat.

we closed up to him is a matter of conjecture! The patrol boat signalled
"Alone in the plane" as we passed on.
I had an idea that the soldiers, when lying on their backs on deck,
you
would all fire a volley at an approaching bomber and get about a thousand
now
bullets into him at once - as there was heaps of ammunition on board but
and
the Commanding Officer objected to this, as their rifles were full of sand
and rust, and would explode on board, which was very feasible. The Spitfire
had just caught the bomber in the nick of time and saved us any further
trouble!
Before dusk we sighted the North Goodwin Light Vessel and felt at home,
although navigation through the Downs channel with so many sunken wrecks and
other dangers was by no means a matter to be treated with a lesser degree of
caution now in the darkness and haze, and with a compass that was at least a
point and a half of westerly variation, unreliable and continually swinging
on account of the degaussing wires having been cut. It was nothing better
than a rough guide, and not to be trusted. And so we passed on through
the Downs and passed the dangerous Goodwin Sands where, if a vessel once
touches and ebbs for a tide, she is doomed to stick for ever on account of the
shifting sands. From pillar to post we were getting the buoys in their order,
until finally to the last, and then Dover Harbour.
On leaving the last buoy there was not a single object to give us any
indication of Dover Harbour, or the entrances. Now, here was a problem!
I wished to goodness there was an air raid on and a flare of searchlights.
I would only have dropped the anchor outside the Harbour as a last resource,
with so many aboard and eager to get ashore. Outside the Breakwater at
Dover was the danger spot of the channel magnetic mines and bombers
occasionally. I did not have long to wait for my wish to be fulfilled. A
trail of tracer bullets, like rockets, and a hundred searchlights in the skye
in the penumbra of which I could easily distinguish the entrances to the
Harbour, and by good fortune we were just on the dot, and a turn of the ship's
head put her at a proper angle for the tide, and in we went, moving slowly
towards the Admiralty Pier, where we berthed at 1.10 a.m. on the 30th May, 1940.,
and commenced disembarking the troops.
Finishing disembarkation about 5.30 a.m. we then shifted to the Outer
Harbour at 10.32 a.m. and were brought in to Ferry Jetty at 5 p.m., 31st May
1940, where the degaussing wire and other repairs were carried out before the
vessel again sailed for the Clyde.
I herewith enclose a photo not of the "EOCHGARRY", but of a ship going
through a similar ordeal of baptism. The arrows show, with respect to position,
the points at which the "LOCHGARRY" got the two closest hits one over the
fo'csle head, and the other by inches clear of the teak wood rail on the
starboard quarter. The others were as wide off as those shown in the
photograph. The value of zig-zagging a vessel under such circumstances cannot
be too strongly stressed. I believe it saved us on all occasions when we
were attacked. The Lewis guns are certainly a help, but a ship would require
to have them in sufficient numbers. A vessel of the size of the "LOCHGARRY"
would bomber at least require as many more on her to have any chance with a dive-
to ward them off before actually coming down to the mast heads.
During the time in Dover at the Ferry Jetty where the repairing was
carried out, the usual routine work of the vessel was being carried on without
any special occurrences, and when finished and we finally took our departure
for the Clyde I was sent for to see the Principal Sea Transport Officer, who
complimented me on the piece of work we had carried through, and said, "It was
grand". I felt that we had at least done something for our country, and if we
were only once across the channel we had a real good load and got along with it
without a hitch.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the report of proceedings of the
employed on Operation "Dynamo".
"M" Drifters attached to Yarmouth Base (H.M.S. "Watchful") whilst
30.5.40.
2345.
Flotilla sailed Yarmouth for Ramsgate,
31.5.40. 1500.
Arrived Ramsgate and received orders to proceed to
Dunkirk forthwith to assist in evacuation of troops.
31.5.40. 1515.
Flotilla sailed for Dunkirk.
1900.
On approaching Dunkirk Roads, Flotilla vas subjected to
intense bombing attack by about sixty enemy bombors.
Consequently, I gave the order to "scatter".
Drifter "Lord Hood" was severaly damaged by & "near riss",
Three casualties, one seaman being killed outright, and two
wounded. I took "Feasible" alongside "Lord Hood* and
removed the C.Bs, the Ship's Company having been picked up by
"Alcmaria".
After ascertaining that nothing further could
be done and nobody left on board, I ordered flotilla to take up
formation again and proceeded into Dunicirk. Themy bombers
had in the meantime been driven off by British Pighters Sub
ships coming under heavy gunfire from shore batteries.
2000.
Secured alongside North Pier, Dunkirk with twelve ships
and proceeded to embark troops.
2030.
Orders were received from a Commander R.N. ashore to
discontinue embarkation and proceed out of harbour to piok up
troops from North Beaches.

with troops, were ordered back to Ramagate,
The remaining
ships followed me out of harbour to the Beaches,
From then
onwards, ships worked independently, returning to Ramagate then
full and back to Beaches for more, This continued throughout
the night and the bllowing day and night of lat/2nd June when all
drifters were ordered by the Naval Officer in Charge, Ramagate to
leave Dunkirk by 0300, 2nd June, empty or full. Plotilla
anchored in Ramsgate Roads awaiting further instructions,

"Alcmaria" with "Genius" in tow and "Swift Wing* with
"Feasible" in tow, under the command of Sub. Ideutenant 5. 1. Mann,
R.N.V.R., were ordered to proceed to Yarmouth. They arrived
Yarmouth, 5th June.

All ships received a certain amount of superficial damage due
to splinters and concussion which in several instances put the deganssing
circuits out of action.
Remarks.
I cannot pay too high a tribute to all the Officers and ships
companies concerned. During the course of the operation, the personnel
were on continuous duty for more than 36 hours during which time we vere
being exposed to constant attack by enemy bombers, shore batteries, mohine
guns and enemy M.T.B's. flying the White Ensign.
Navigation, especially at night, was extremely hazardous is no
charts of the locallity were available at such short notice, and 1 consider
a splendid example of team work, commonsense and initiative was displayed
by the Skippers in bringing all ships back to Ramagate din conclusion.
It is very hard to pick out any individual for special mention
where all did so well.
I regret to have to report the undermentioned casualties which
occurred in "Lord Hood".
