Flare burning drifters - Continued
The following 1s a summary of the report of proceedings
of the F/B drifters furnished by Captai n A/P Dover:
26th May
Eileen Emma and Netsukis returned to
Dover from Dunkirk. The Gervais
Rentoul remained in Dunkirk.
Shipmates, Girl Pamela, Lord Howe and
Young Mun returned to harbour from
minefield patrols.
27th May
p.m.
17 F/B drifters sailed for Dunkirk from
Dover, 1.e. all except the Gervais
Rentoul and The Boys.
1800
On approaching the outer channel at
Dunkirk, enemy A/C dropped 16 bombs.
As the result of near misses, Boy Roy
(Skipper E.F. Dettman, R.N.R.)
commenced to sink and was beached in
Dunkirk harbour, (1) Paxton (Lt. Cdr.
R.M. Prior R.N. and Skipper A.M.
Lovis R.N.R.) started a severe leak
and was scuttled alongside the quay.(2)

During the night the drifters evacuated
about 2000 troops from the beach 3
miles east of Dunkirk, using ship's
dinghies.

Rentoul) returned to Dover and
disembarked about 2000 troops.

Dunkirk, towing boats for beach work;

to immediate notice for a further

filled up with (mostly) French troops

Yorkshire Lass, disabled and full of
troops, was taken in tow by the tug
Sun XV.

Yorkshire Lass was able to proceed
under her own power for Dover.

6. I approached a number of trawlers and other small
vessels which seemed to be getting under way for Great Britain
and asked them to remain until I could fill them up with
troops. It seemed to me that the orders which they said
they had received to return to Great Britain were not bona fide.
7. I proceeded ashore and interviewed various military
officers at as many of the beaches as possible. At the
request of a senior military officer I agreed to assume the
duties of Beach Master and arranged to continue the organisation
until all the troops on the beaches were on board. I told
them that if anything went wrong during the night we would
return at dawn. I learned that some of the men had been in
the dunes for two or three days awaiting embarkation, and they
were obviously much cheered up to learn that they would get
out that night. The flat-bottomed boats which the military
had been using themselves were extremely dangerous in the surf
which, although not very great, was sufficient to capsize
these boats.
8. I found from experience that it was much quicker to run a
load of troops in a single motor boat rather than to fill up
one or more lifeboats and tow the greater number. The dangers
of controlling boats in tow when they were crowded both near
the shore and alongside H.M. ships were considerable. During
the night I acquired in one way or another five additional
lifeboats, and in many cases the military themselves acted as
crews.
9. The pontoon bridges which had been built by the military
the previous day were extremely useful, and were largely res-
ponsible for the rapid evacuation of troops. It is interesting
to note that a few moments after the last men had been taken
off one of these bridges it was hit by enemy artillery.
10. All the troops that I could find were embarked by midnight
and placed in ships which sailed for England. Just before
midnight I went along certain of the beaches to look for
stragglers. A Staff Officer informed me that no more troops
would embark from these beaches but that they would march to
Dunkirk, as it was anticipated these beaches would be shelled
and would probably be in German hands the following day. This,
as it turned out, was a correct forecast.
11. I estimate that from pontoon bridges and beaches approxi-
mately 5,000 troops were probably embarked.
12. The soldiers, though obviously extremely tired, made no
complaints of the delay or of the wettings which they got in
wading out in the surf to get into the motor boats, and were
more than thankful for the kindnesses which were shown them in
the various ships. One could not but be impressed by the
amount of friendly cheering which occurred when H.M. ships
passed the troop ships at sea. The great majority of the
troops were carrying their rifles and side-arms, and I insisted
that in no case must they be thrown away. I was impressed to
notice that the military padres were always amongst the last to
leave the beach in their respective parties.

reported what was considered a successful attack on a submarine off
"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "I" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "T" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler

were on passage from Ramsgate, and which had been ear-marked
for lifting the final covering force.
In the afternoon, however, it was learned that the
Military plan had been changed, and that it was no longer
possible for the original covering position, as planned, to be
held by 4,000 troops who were then to withdraw to the beaches
for embarkation by boat. Instead, it was learned that the
Eastern-most Division was to be withdrawn Westward from the
La Panne area, and that the special flight of boats was to be
used to lift this force from the beaches. At the same time,
the troops in the Bray and Malo sectors were being thinned out
by movements Westward towards Dunkirk itself. This change of
plan involved concentrating the special tows and the mine-
sweepers - to which they were to transfer the troops - into
the stretch opposite the beach between Bray and one mile East
of La Panne, and also advancing the commencement of the
operation by one hour. The risk of this change of plan was
obvious as the boat tows were not in communication with the
Vice Admiral, and reliance had to be placed on the Minesweepers
to inform and see that the escorting M.A.S.B. would shepherd
the tows to the new positions. The minesweepers had anchored
so as to serve as guiding marks, as had been explained to the
Naval Officers in each tow.
Apart from the special tow, a very large number of
small power boats despatched, in most cases direct, from the
South East Ports, Newhaven to Sheerness, were arriving off the
beaches, and compensated in a large measure for the heavy
losses that had occurred amongst the original towing boats,
whalers, cutters, lifeboats and ships' boats, which had

On the La Panne beaches after 1600 very good progress
was made. The piers of pontoons built by the Military the
previous day were extremely useful, and were largely respons-
ible for the rapid evacuation of troops. All the troops

searched the adjacent beaches for stragglers at midnight, and

a few minutes later :
" Port continuously bombed all day and on fire. Embarkation possible only
from beaches east of harbour A.B.C.D.¹ Send all ships and passenger ships
there to anchor. Am ordering Wolfhound to load there and sail. T.O.O.2005."
To the Vice-Admiral, Dover, the situation must have appeared critical
when, later that evening, he received a report from two military officers from
G.H.Q., that the plight of the B.E.F. was precarious and that the enemy might,
indeed, succeed in cutting it off from Dunkirk.²
All ships diverted to the beaches
Such was the grim picture presenting itself to the Vice-Admiral, Dover, that
night - the B.E.F. in grave and very real danger of being cut off altogether from
Dunkirk, and possibly only a bare 24 hours available for its evacuation. Admiral
Ramsay reacted to these dire tidings with characteristic drive and energy,
and a period of intense activity ensued. Every effort was concentrated on
sending as many craft as possible to the beaches without delay². Order
followed order in rapid succession. Personnel ships were diverted to the
beach, code letters A, B, C and D (i.e. Malo beach). Four paddle minesweepers³
were sailed from the Downs to La Panne beach. Destroyers were rushed to the
beaches and urged to embark as many British troops as possible, as this was
the last chance of saving them "; the Gallant, and Vivacious, then on patrol,
the Windsor, Vimy, Anthony, Impulsive, Sabre and the cruiser Calcutta, were
all ordered to proceed with the utmost despatch to the beach at Malo-les-Bains
and the beach at Zuydcoote, just east of it; the Grafton and Greyhound, on
patrol between Fairy Bank and Kwint Bank buoys, and the Wakeful, just
arrived at Dover from Plymouth, were hurried to the beach at La Panne.
The wording of some of the signals4 conveying these orders reflects the
desperation felt that night, a desperation which, in spite of the course of sub-
sequent events, was at the time only too well-founded. " Had the situation
appeared less critical," observes Admiral Ramsay, an organised flow of large
and small craft, working in reliefs, would have been arranged."⁵
Yet a further batch of vessels arrived off the beaches that evening; the
17 available flare-burning drifters of the Dover Auxiliary Patrol⁶ had sailed
for Dunkirk during the afternoon, and on arriving were diverted to the beaches
by the Wolfhound, in accordance with a signal from the Vice-Admiral, Dover⁷,
and anchored close inshore. The boats from the Wolfhound and Wolsey, and

The movement from England towards Dunkirk commenced at 1700. The
armada consisted of 13 personnel vessels, 2 large store carriers, 11 destroyers,
5 paddle minesweepers, 9 fleet sweepers, 1 special service vessel, 9 drifters,
6 skoots, 2 armed yachts, 1 gunboat, a large number of tugs, lifeboats, etc.,
formed either in organised tows or proceeding individually. For various
reasons, however, not all of these ships evacuated troops.¹
The composition of the French contingent was not known at Dover. Actually,
3 French torpedo boats, two minesweeping trawlers, two patrol vessels, and
17 trawlers and motor fishing vessels landed troops in England on the 3rd June.
One Belgian patrol boat and 16 or 17 trawlers brought troops.
B.E.F. evacuated, 2330/2
The first destroyers to reach Dunkirk were the Sabre and Shikari, which
sailed together from Dover at 1845. As the latter ship rounded No. 6 W buoy
enemy shore batteries opened fire, but caused no damage. Berthing was
carried out by an officer with a loud speaker at the pier head. Both destroyers
sailed again at 2200, the Sabre with 500 and the Shikari with 700 troops. The
Venomous, which arrived at 2150, had difficulty in going alongside the East Pier.
This was not a solid jetty, but was built of concrete piles through which the
west-going tide set. This, coupled with a fresh easterly wind, made it very

During the afternoon of the 3rd the French authorities transmitted the figure
of French troops still remaining in Dunkirk. This was about 30,000, a pro-
portion of whom belonged to other than combatant units. The total capacity
of the lifting force, if used to the full, was 30,000, but this was about 5,000 more
than the facilities within the port would permit of being embarked in 4 hours,
even if the French troops moved with the greatest rapidity at all points of
embarkation. On previous occasions there had been some instances of difficulty
in persuading French troops to embark otherwise than as complete units.
Vice-Admiral Ramsay consequently impressed on the French liaison officers
the necessity of speed, and he added a number of French officers and ratings
to the augmented pier parties which were despatched to Dunkirk at 2200, in

6. I approached a number of trawlers and other small
vessels which seemed to be getting under way for Great Britain
and asked them to remain until I could fill them up with
troops. It seemed to me that the orders which they said
they had received to return to Great Britain were not bona fide.
7. I proceeded ashore and interviewed various military
officers at as many of the beaches as possible. At the
request of a senior military officer I agreed to assume the
duties of Beach Master and arranged to continue the organisation
until all the troops on the beaches were on board. I told
them that if anything went wrong during the night we would
return at dawn. I learned that some of the men had been in
the dunes for two or three days awaiting embarkation, and they
were obviously much cheered up to learn that they would get
out that night. The flat-bottomed boats which the military
had been using themselves were extremely dangerous in the surf
which, although not very great, was sufficient to capsize
these boats.
8. I found from experience that it was much quicker to run a
load of troops in a single motor boat rather than to fill up
one or more lifeboats and tow the greater number. The dangers
of controlling boats in tow when they were crowded both near
the shore and alongside H.M. ships were considerable. During
the night I acquired in one way or another five additional
lifeboats, and in many cases the military themselves acted as
crews.
9. The pontoon bridges which had been built by the military
the previous day were extremely useful, and were largely res-
ponsible for the rapid evacuation of troops. It is interesting
to note that a few moments after the last men had been taken
off one of these bridges it was hit by enemy artillery.
10. All the troops that I could find were embarked by midnight
and placed in ships which sailed for England. Just before
midnight I went along certain of the beaches to look for
stragglers. A Staff Officer informed me that no more troops
would embark from these beaches but that they would march to
Dunkirk, as it was anticipated these beaches would be shelled
and would probably be in German hands the following day. This,
as it turned out, was a correct forecast.
11. I estimate that from pontoon bridges and beaches approxi-
mately 5,000 troops were probably embarked.
12. The soldiers, though obviously extremely tired, made no
complaints of the delay or of the wettings which they got in
wading out in the surf to get into the motor boats, and were
more than thankful for the kindnesses which were shown them in
the various ships. One could not but be impressed by the
amount of friendly cheering which occurred when H.M. ships
passed the troop ships at sea. The great majority of the
troops were carrying their rifles and side-arms, and I insisted
that in no case must they be thrown away. I was impressed to
notice that the military padres were always amongst the last to
leave the beach in their respective parties.

Thursday, 30th May.
9. 800 troops were landed at Dover during the forenoon from
Drifters returning from Dunkirk. A/S Trawler "Kingston Andalusite"
reported what was considered a successful attack on a submarine off
"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "T" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "I" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler
