on a mine a near up
As Westella closed the position,
depth charges lifted the Westella
explosions from Blackburn Rovers'
out of the water and put her asdic
1639ca
installation and pumps out of action.
The Westella, between S and T buoys,
was blown up by a mine or torpedo,
and commenced to sink. Her depth
charges were put to "safe", and the
tr. Grimsby Town was ordered by the
tr. Saon to sink her.

Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "I" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.

"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "T" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",

At 0820, the "Skylark" sustained further damage to her stern
due to the strain on the tow caused by the heavy seas, and, as she
was in danger of foundering, her crew were taken off and a cargo of
ladders and petrol and all serviceable stores aboard transferred to
the "Strathelliot" the boat being them cut adrift. We then closed
a trawler "KO" and semaphored her to sink this boat which she did.
At 0845, we took in tow the "Malden Annie IV", nut at 0855
her Port mooring bollard tore away and the towing hawser was then
secured to the Starboard. This was showing signs of parting, and
finally tore away at 0940. The hawser was then secured to a small
hook.
At 1000 we closed the trawler "Grimsby Town" and sent a
message ashore by her reporting our position. A mechanic was put
aboard the "Malden Annie IV" to try to effect repairs to her magneto,
but this was found to be impossible. A hawser was then passed right
round underneath her and was secured on deck, the towing hawser being
bent to this. This hawser parted at 1215, when "Malden Annie IV"
reported that water was entering due to damage received forward. A
new hawser was passed and the vessel towed stern first. A great deal
of damage. had been caused to her superstructure by heavy seas crashing
her into the trawler, but having lost two ships, I was loth to lose
a third. The tow parted twice more in the course of the afternoon, but
the vessel was eventually taken to Dunkerque. I would like to mention
the conduct of the officer in command of the "Malden Annie IV" who
worked extremely hard under very trying conditions to bring his ship
to port.
At 1530 we were proceeding down the channel into Dunkerque
when a destroyer came out firing on and being fired on by batteries
ashore. It was impossible for us to steer out of her line of fire,
due to our tow, but fortunately, although shells were falling close
to us and planes were trying to bomb the destroyer, we sustained no
damage the mearest shell being about 70 yards on our starboard beam.

REPORT OF ENQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF H.M.
TRAWLER "WESTELLA" IN OPERATION "DYNAMO
ADMIRALTY 22SEP 1940
Sir,
With reference to Admiralty Letter L.6245/40 dated 1st August, 1940, be
pleased to lay before Their Lordships the following report resulting from
an Enquiry into the loss of H.M.A/S Trawler WESTELLA on 2nd June, 1940.
2. Chief Skipper A. Gove, R.N.R. who was in command of WESTELLA was examined
on 13th September, 1940.
3. At about 1600 on 2nd June when patrolling in the vicinity of "I" buoy in
company with BLACKBURN ROVERS the latter was blown up by a mine or torpedo, and
sank instantly. WESTELLA went full speed ahead towards the position where
BLACKBURN ROVERS had sunk. As she neared the position explosions from BLACKBURN
ROVERS' depth charges shook and lifted the ship out of the water and put her
asdic installation and pumps out of action.
4. Shortly afterwards whilst "WESTELLA" was in about the same position a
heavy explosion underneath the ship's port bow opened up the bow and blew
in the foremost bulkhead. Cables fell through the bottom and the gun platform
on the forecastle deck was bent upwards about 2 feet. She was flooded to the
engine room fore bulkhead and took a heavy list to port. About 10 minutes
later, Depth Charges having been set to 'Safe', the sinking ship was abandoned
survivors being taken onboard GRIMSBY TOWN.
5. As WESTELLA was a danger to navigation GRIMSBY TOWN was ordered by SAON to
sink her. Chief Skipper Gove states that he understands that this was done.
6. The ship was probably sunk in about 12/15 fathoms. Except for a few books
which were loose, and in use, the Confidential Books and Secret Publications
went down with the ship in a weighted perforated bag.
7. Asdic installation was not destroyed before ship was abandoned, but may have
been badly damaged by gunfire which sank the ship.
8. It has not been possible to establish definitely what caused the explosion,
but all the evidence available points to the probability of it being due to a
moored wire. mine D
9. In the circumstances in which this Trawler was lost no useful information
was elicited as to the behaviour of material.

A total of 26,256 men were landed in England on 2nd June, 19,561 from
Dunkirk harbour and 6,695 from the beaches. Of these totals, French ships
working only from the harbour carried 1634, and Belgian trawlers carried 313.
The accumulated total of men evacuated to this date was 285,305.

blew up on a mine and sank instantly. As the Westella closed the position,
explosions from the Blackburn Rovers' depth charges lifted the ship out of the
water and put her asdic installation and pumps out of action. About 40
minutes later the Westella was herself blown up by a mine between S and T
buoys, and commenced to sink. Her depth charges were set to 'safe', and the
trawlers Saon and Grimsby Town sank her and picked up her survivors and
those of the Blackburn Rovers, some badly injured. (Appendix J.9, J.10).
Two other trawlers met with misadventure on the 2nd, but neither was sunk.
Details are lacking but it is known that the Spurs and another trawler, probably
either the Kingston Alalite or Kingston Olivine, were both damaged by gunfire.
The Spurs was on the patrol line, and it is not known how she came close
enough to the coast to be damaged by shore gunfire. Gunfire also sank the
Gallant's motor boat off Malo at 0210.

9. 800 troops were landed at Dover during the forenoon from
Drifters returning from Dunkirk. A/S Trawler "Kingston Andalusite"
reported what was considered a successful attack on a submarine off
"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "T" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "I" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler
(Par.13. "Cayton Wyke"

At her 0730, up against the "Mary the Rose" reported that, due to a following sea
and water decided that faster than it could be pumped and bailed out.
I therefore as she was unlikely to be of any use at
Dunkerque-even presuming we could get her there-she should be
abandoned and sunk. I therefore ordered the rest of the convoy to
proceed under the Lieutenant R.N.R.. We then took off the crew of the
"Mary Rose" and fired one tray of Lewis gun ammunition into her water
line, finally breaking her up by ramming her to prevent her becoming
a danger to navigation. We then proceeded after the convoy and picked
up another boat which was being towed.
At 0820, the "Skylark" sustained further damage to her stern
due to the strain on the tow caused by the heavy seas, and, as she
was in danger of foundering, her crew were taken off and a cargo of
ladders and petrol and all serviceable stores aboard transferred to
the "Strathelliot" - the boat being them cut adrift. We then closed
trawler "KO" and semaphored her to sink this boat which she did.
At 0845, we took in tow the "Malden Annie IV", nut at 0855
her Port mooring bollard tore away and the towing hawser was then
secured to the Starboard. This was showing signs of parting, and
finally tore away at 0940. The hawser was then secured to a small
hook.
At 1000 we closed the trawler "Grimsby Town" and sent a
message ashore by her reporting our position. A mechanic was put
aboard the "Malden Annie IV" to try to effect repairs to her magneto,
but this was found to be impossible. A hawser was then passed right
round underneath her and was secured on deck, the towing hawser being
bent to this. This hawser parted at 1215, when "Malden Annie IV"
reported that water was entering due to damage received forward. A
new hawser was passed and the vessel towed stern first. A great deal
of damage had been caused to her superstructure by heavy seas crashing
her into the trawler, but having lost two ships, I was loth to lose
a third. The tow parted twice more in the course of the afternoon, but
the vessel was eventually taken to Dunkerque. I would like to mention
the conduct of the officer in command of the "Malden Annie IV" who
worked extremely hard under very trying conditions to bring his ship
to port.
At 1530 we were proceeding down the channel into Dunkerque
when a destroyer came out firing on and being fired on by batteries
ashore. It was impossible for us to steer out of her line of fire,
due to our tow, but fortunately, although shells were falling close
to us and planes were trying to bomb the destroyer, we sustained no
damage the mearest shell being about 70 yards on our starboard beam.

beaches at 1620, we received salvoes of bombs intended for destroyers
close in as our draft would allow) and eventually attracted the attentior
