FIELDS by his seamanlike actions. His conduct at
all times was admirable.
Recommended for decoration.
Able Seaman George Henry Baker. D/SSX. 27349.
This rating was Leading Seaman Legg's right-hand
man and distinguished himself by displaying unusual
coolness and initiative for one of his age (19 years).
In addition, accompanied his Commanding Officer in
the fast Dutch motor launch to Dunkirk Mole, where
he displayed conspicuous courage whilst under fire.
This rating has unusual qualities for his age and
experience.
Recommended for special advancement
to Leading Seaman.

From 1500 onwards we were subject to almost
continuous attack by enemy aircraft and had the
satisfaction of seeing 7 bombers brought down by
destroyers' and shore batteries' anti-sireraft
fire. Two enemy pilots escaped by parachute.
Majority of troops embarked at this point were
French.
1700
On hearing that there were a number of British
troops on the beach near La Panne proceeded
there with Sub. Lt. Cornish and his motor boat
and succeeded in embarking a number of British.
Total number embarked was not recorded by ne
but was approximately 150 altogether.

Having valuable cargo aboard and observing that
there were a number of schoots and other craft
who, owing to the absence of small power driven
craft, were unable to get any troops. I decided
to return to Base with my load and turned over
my whaler to Sub. Lt. Cornish and asked him to
report to the Schoot "Atlantic", the Commanding
Officer of which told me that he had been there
all day without being able to get a single man
on board for reasons explained above.
Proceeded by route X in company with other drifters,
troop ships, tugs, etc. and were attacked by
enemy aircraft until past No 6 W Buoy, when they
were driven off by anti-aircraft fire from
British destroyers.

R.N.L.B. WALTON & FRINTON. - Lieutenant Reginald Hounsham Mead.
Was taken over to Dunkirk, and whilst being R.N.V.R. towed
over there, underwent many air attacks. Boat proceeded
into Dunkirk and ferried troops to the various ships.
During the operation, Lieutenant R. H. Mead, R.N.V.R.,
was killed, and the boat carried on with the crew. They
proceeded to the beach where they continued taking troops
from the shore by night.

Dutch Skoot H.M.S. TWENTE (Continued).
3 nights continuous work under way without any
rest whatsoever recovered a large number of troops
from Dunkirk harbour and La Panne beach, and
displayed great seamanship and judgment going
alongside H.M.P.S. GRACIE FIELDS when she was bombed
and reduced to a sinking condition by enemy aircraft
with about 800 troops on board. GRACIE FIELDS was
unmanageable and unable to stop her engines. TWENTE
secured alongside under way and removed injured and
other survivors until full. Subsequently,
Lieutenant-Commander Boys-Smith commanded two army
motor launches and a Dutch motor launch, and completed
3 other trips to Dunkirk beaches and Dunkirk harbour,
the majority of which were executed during the worst
periods of intensive air attack. Many difficulties
were encountered and overcome with the greatest
determination.

Displayed coolness and resource under fire during
the several trips as coxswain of the TWENTE and later
in the motor launch KESTREL. Largely responsible
for the successful rescues from the sinking GRACIE

all times was admirable.

This rating was Leading Seaman Legg's right-hand
man and distinguished himself by displaying unusual
coolness and initiative for one of his age (19 years).

he displayed conspicuous courage whilst under fire.
This rating has unusual qualities for his age and
experience.

It is impossible to give the story of every ship, although each ship has its

found. Next day, the 1st June, however, at 1400, S/Lt. T.E. Godman, R.N.V.R.
in a Naval steam pinnace, off La Panne, sighted the Marsayru drifting with the
tide and unoccupied. She was found to be in working order; the engine was
started up and Sub-Lieut. Godman took an A.B. and a soldier as crew. He
left Petty Officer Morrison in charge of the steam pinnace with orders to lay off
and wait for the return of the Marsayru.

Copy of Statement from Skipper of the S.T. "KESTREL"
Re Dunkirk.
One of the most outstanding incidents to come
under my notice, was the action of one of our dstroyers.
We had had a quiet, uneventful crossing in
very fine weather on this particular morning, and orders were
to enter Dunkirk Roads, by the South Channel. This Channel
runs very close to the shore, to the southward of Dunkirk, and
part of this shore was in enemy hands. As we entered this channel
a destroyer, came to meet us, and got between us and the shore
and escorting us for some distance, and letting out a smoke
screen, shielding us from the shore. All the time the destoyer's
gun were blaxing away, and his anti-aircraft guns were in action
with many enemy planes, that were overhead.
The destroyer went ahead, and as he passed us,
we got a cheery wave from the officers on the bridge, and most
were doing their job, that drew the admiration of myself and
of the crew. It was the cool efficiency, with which those chaps
crew. Their action made our work easier, and we filled up with
troops in no time.

My representative Captain T.W.G.Duka, who returned here on Saturday
tells me you asked him to let you have a brief summary of the vessels of
the W.D. Fleet which were employed under you from May 31 onwards at Ramagate
in connection with the evacuation from Dunkirk.
I attach two statements for your information in case they may be of
some use to you.
Statement No. 1 - - shows the number of trips made to Dunkirk by the
different launches, and you will find on the top of page 1 in the right-
hand column that the 4th and 5th trips on June 2 and 3 were carried out
with what I have described as scratch crews, as the W.D.Fleet, all of whom of
were civilians, declined to go after the third trip with the exception
two Engineers, and two Able Seamen, namely:
1. R.WALTER
- who was 1st Engineer in the "HAIG".
2. J.H.SPAIN - who was the Engineer in the "KESTREL".
3. H.HAY
- A.B. in the "SWALLOW".

From 1500 onwards we were subject to almost
continuous attack by enemy aircraft and had the
satisfaction of seeing 7 bombers brought down by
destroyers' and shore batteries' anti-sireraft
fire. Two enemy pilots escaped by parachute.
Majority of troops embarked at this point were
French.
1700
On hearing that there were a number of British
troops on the beach near La Panne proceeded
there with Sub. Lt. Cornish and his motor boat
and succeeded in embarking a number of British.
Total number embarked was not recorded by no
but was approximately 150 altogether.
2030
Having valuable cargo aboard and observing that
there were a number of schoots and other craft
who, owing to the absence of small power driven
craft, were unable to get any troops. I decided
to return to Base with my load and turned over
my whaler to Sub. Lt. Cornish and asked him to
report to the Schoot "Atlantic", the Commanding
Officer of which told me that he had been there
all day without being able to get a single man
on board for reasons explained above.
Proceeded by route X in company with other drifters,
troop ships, tugs, etc. and were attacked by
enemy aircraft until past No 6 W Buoy, when they
were driven off by anti-aircraft fire from
British destroyers.
1st June.

Arrived N. Goodwin L/V and anchored owing to
insufficient water in Ramagate.
1600
Weighed and proceeded in to Ramagate and discharged
That troops. evening was ordered to return to Dunkirk in
"Ocean Breeze" but order was cancelled as we
could not reach destination by 2130.
2nd June.
Ordered to proceed in Power Boat "Haig" with Lt. in
McMullan R.N.R. and Sub. Lt. Hollingshead
Proceeded with Marlborough in company with
company with Marlborough, Kestrel and Swallow. Cmdr.
2100
Troop R.N. in command of "Haig" and with one
lifeboat in tow.
3rd June.
0030
Approached Dunkirk; obliged to out lifeboat adrift
she became full of water and was hampering bollard.
Entered speed Dunkirk Harbour and proceeded alongside
as of "Haig" and damaging towing
