2 potential matching records have been identified.
These records may contain vessel particulars, reported movements, participation assessments, named personnel and source references. A match does not by itself prove that the vessel participated in Operation Dynamo.
“Potential match” means a candidate returned by one or more indexing rules; it is not necessarily an exact identity match. Depending on the source, matching may use a normalised vessel name, a partial text or OCR hit, an alias, or related metadata. Roman-numeral suffixes such as I, II, III, IV and V may be absent, misread or separated from the base name, so records for similarly named vessels can be grouped incorrectly. Multi-word names can also produce candidates where only one significant word matches. Confirm the full name, numeral, vessel type, dimensions, builder, ownership, dates and source context before treating two records as the same vessel.
We are compiling and checking transcriptions, metadata, vessel-name matches, source references and reuse permissions before publishing further detail. This work helps prevent incomplete OCR, historic spelling variations or unverified associations from being presented as established fact.

Identity of crashing aircraft uncertain, though 5 at least were presumably German. 1915. Arrived Dunkirk Roads. Beach and shipping subjected to severe bombardment from shore batteries and aircraft. 1930. Attempted to beach boats, and take off men, but abandoned idea - too much ground swell, and semi-submerged trucks, army wagons and other equipment left, destroyed by the B.E.F. on beach, endangered the safety of ships. 2130. Ordered ships to proceed to outside of jetty, instructing them to fill up with soldiers and to ferry same to any larger ships unable to close harbour or beach. Each ship was instructed to transport approximately 30 to 40 men (approximate total - 200) and they were transferred to H.V. Tilly and other ships cruising empty outside harbour entrance. 2240. Instructed ships to keep permanently closed up and to return to inside of harbour as swell made embarkation of troops from outside of jetty too difficult. Contact between Bawley boats maintained by signal of one short flash every two minutes. Formation preserved. 2310. Mole and harbour severely shelled. Morale of the soldiers on all occasions I was there, was superb, and though exhausted and under constant fire, their only thoughts were for the wounded among them, and of saving any equipment possible. 2350. Embarked approximately 200 men; transferred same to the trawler Sarah Hayes and various other craft returning to England not fully laden. Instructed convoy to continue ferry work but if separated from me to return to Ramsgate laden with soldiers. 1.6.40. 0140. Re-entered harbour; jetty crammed with British soldiers but no ships whatever alongside. Started loading troops, sending back to shore two German prisoners attempting to get to England, leaving them in charge of a Lance Corporal. 0200 - 0250. Jetty shelled, bombed and machine-gunned by enemy - very few casualties. 0300. Proceeded to Ramsgate fully laden with soldiers of 1st Division including the Colonel in Charge of the Worcesters and Officers of the Camerons, accompanied by Bawley boat Resolute. Arrived at Ramsgate 0930 approximately on 1.6.40. CONDITION OF BAWLEY BOATS AT RAMSGATE. DEFENDER. Stem damaged. Returned with approximately 60 men. RELIANCE. Damaged side. Returned with 80 men. LETITIA. Undamaged. Returned towing Renown until latter was blown up. (Troops transferred to trawler who took Bawleys in tow). ENDEAVOUR. Steering gear out of order; towed back by Sarah Hayes. RESOLUTE. Engine trouble. Returned with approximately 40 men. RENOWN. Mined and sunk off Dunkirk - all hands lost. FRIDAY, 31ST MAY CHAP. VIII Later on 2nd June, on instructions from the N.O.I.C., the original crew took charge of the Marsayru, but she did not, apparently, make a second trip to Dun- kirk. Her skipper (G. D. Olivier) received the D.S.M. for his services, and her engineer (C. Coggins) a mention in despatches. The Cockle Bawley boats Of the small craft that went over on this day, Admiral Ramsay speaks in the following terms of the Cockle Bawley boats²: "The conduct of the crews of these cockle boats was exemplary. They were all volunteers who were rushed over to Dunkirk in one day, probably none of them had been under gunfire before and certainly none of them under Naval discipline. These boats were Thames estuary fishing boats which never left the estuary, and only one of their crews had been further afield than Ramsgate before. In spite of this fact perfect formation was maintained throughout the day and night under the control of a Sub-Lieutenant R.N.V.R.³ in command of the Unit, and all orders were carried out with great diligence even under actual shell fire and aircraft attack." One of these cockle boats, the Renown, was blown up by a mine while returning to England disabled and in tow of the drifter Ben and Lucy. Her skipper, W. H. Noakes, and his crew⁴ were killed. The Ben and Lucy had been towing the drifter Feasible (disabled by a shell hit), 3 life-boats and the cockle boat Letitia. At 0115 on the 1st June the Renown, by then disabled, attached herself to this tow, but an hour later she was blown to pieces and a hail of wood and splinters came down on the Letitia's deck. The Letitia's skipper (A. J. Dench) says, In the pitch dark we could see nothing, and after the explosion we hard nothing and we could do nothing, except pull in the tow rope, which was just as we passed it to the Renown about 3 hour before. French and Belgian ships arrive Early on the 31st it became known that the Belgian Government were anxious that several small Belgian fishing craft lying at Brixham should take part in the evacuation and steps were taken to arrange this. At 1335 the French destroyer Léopard routed from the Downs to Dunkirk two French trawlers5, three French motor fishing vessels⁶, and ten Belgian trawlers⁷. The Belgian trawlers were under the orders of Pilote Malet; the remainder of the ships under Lieutenant de vaisseau Drogou. Other Allied ships that sailed for Dunkirk on this day were the French cargo ships Ingénieur Cachin and Margaux, the trawlers Pierre et Marie, Emma and Duperre, and the patrol vessel Diligente; the Belgian trawlers Lydie Suzanne and Yvonne, and the drifters Gerard-Léon (H.64), Anne Marie and Thérèse Compas. On her return journey the Pierre et Marie picked up 3 English sailors from a drifting motor boat. I The Marsayru's skipper says that throughout 31st May, and the days and nights that followed (its all a complete jumble in my mind) we were under constant fire but the ship was not hit by anything." It seems, however, that Mr. Olivier was only in the evacu- ation for 5 hours, i.e. from 1600 to 2100, 31st May. 2 Defender, Endeavour, Letitia, Reliance, Renown and Resolute. 3 S/Lt. M. H. B. -2- Left the quay and proceeded outside the Mole to H.M.S. "Wahus ", who took troops on board. Swell from other craft made ship dash into the side of war-ship, tearing rails down and breaking ropes. Had orders to load on board about 400-lbs. of T.N.T. in two barrels. Five naval ratings came on board and proceeded to wreck of H.M.S. Mhoquto ". Went alongside and put on ratings and T.N.T. Waiting there for ratings to fix charge to blow up the wreck. When all was ready naval ratings jumped on board and we got away from wreck in quick time. Engineer reported that port engine not running very well. Put ratings on board H.M.S. " Walrus " ". Swell from other ships did more damage to topsides while lying alongside war-ship. Received instructions to proceed back to Ramsgate. During the operations inside Dunkirk and on the work out- side we had no enemy aircraft overhead but plenty of gun- fire with bursts overhead and falling shrapnel. The town of Dunkirk was all# on fire with explosions at intervals which gave enough light to distinguish markings in and around Dunkirk and to see the masts and funnels of ships which were sunk outside the Harbour. Proceeded on passage back to Ramsgate when a big paddle steamer overtook us and we obtained a tow; also towing astern of the paddle steamer was one of the naval fast torpedo boats which had broken down. The paddle steamer increased her speed to about 15 knots, the wash from the paddles caused us to sheer into the naval launch and in doing so two sailors were thrown overboard from the launch. Our tow rope was cut and after a while we managed to pick up one of the men who had fallen overboard. A little later a Dutch fishing vessel reported that they had picked up the second man; so we proceeded on our passage back. The port engine continued to give trouble and we were over- hauled by a large Tug which came up close to us and the naval officer in charge of same gave orders to us to abandon ship as owing to daylight coming on we would be exposed to danger from enemy aircraft. We transferred the guns and ourselves to the Tug and dis- covered a wounded French soldier in the after cabin who had been left behind. We took him on board the Tug with us. While we were transferring to the Tug three enemy aircraft flew overhead. The Tug proceeded on the passage back to Ramsgate leaving "LETITIA" abandoned. We arrived at Ramsgate at 7.20 a.m. and awaited further orders. Eventually we received our orders to return and caught the 10.36 train from Ramsgate, arriving at Chichester at 6.40 p.H SIGNED: E.A. "Warrior" running very easily and quite comfortable, considerable amount of flotsam everywhere, inner tubes, boxes and timber - had to keep a sharp look out. Swell increased, saw right under "Letitia" several times. 5.15 p.m. noticed "Idaho" sheer hard to Port, eased engines and watched her for a few minutes, decided she was out of control, and blew for rounding to port. Rounded and drew alongside. Much crashing from galley when getting round, owing to very heavy rolling. Got hands to pack everything possible, nursed "Warrior" to leeward of "Idaho" and slowly closed to. Managed had been pulled in showing 57 miles. to get a line to her and heard she had lost her rudder. Log "Idaho" extremely hard to handle, running in either direction and parted line after 10 minutes, got after anchor cable up, and floated pitching badly. Passed wire rope back to him, got it fast, wire pulled round after cable aboard and made fast. I rigged a rope spring a back to him on petrol can. "Idaho" picked up can and and saloon roof to take snatch of cable. My boats having departed I made contact with H.M.D. "FEASABLE" taking her in tow and proceeded to Westward in search of further troops. When off the harbour entrance I contacted three boat loads of troops and took them aboard, as there were no boats crews I put them in tow astern of H.M.D. "FEASABLE". "BEN & LUCY" was now loaded to capacity and was preparing to proceed homewards when I was hailed by a naval rating alone in a waterlogged whaler, I took him aboard abandoning the whaler, I was then hailed by a fishing smack (?) "LETITIA" of Southend who requested a tow as he was short of fuel, I told him to tail on, and June 1st. continued my passage, the time being approximately 0100 The channel was negotiated without event, two destroyers being passed bound in. At approximately 0200 we turned to the North having rounded the Whistle bucy and, when about six miles to the North of the channel aircraft was heard overhead, while A.A. gunfire and searchlights had been active for the last half hour. At approximately 0330 8. very heavy explosion occured close to the port quarter of "FEASABLE". The skipper and I were thrown across the bridge with great violence. On looking aft I saw a large column of smoke and water close astern of "FEASABLE". Owing to the abnormal phosphorescence of the water I judged this to be an aerial attack on what was thought to be a large vessel, and as "FEASABLE" was still in tow and made no signal for assistance I continued. (I was subsequently informed by "LETITIA" that another smack named "ROWAN" which had attached herself to the tow unknown to me had been sunk by this explosion.) at "BEN & LUCY" was now making water & about one foot per hour. About 0700 I was overtaken and hailed by "VERNON" Pinnace V.4. who requested & course for the North Goodwin Light Vessel and then proceeded ahead of us. At approximately 0745 we sighted North Goodwin to port and headed for Ramsgate. When approximately 3 miles to the N.E. of Ramsgate "LETITIA" slipped her tow and under her own power began to make off. I hailed her and when he informed me about the loss of the "ROWAN" I ordered him to report to Naval Officer in Charge, Ramsgate. He replied that he was returned whence he came. I repeated my previous instructions which I do not think he obeyed. When a mile to the Northward of the harbour I signalled
