Flare burning drifters - Continued
The following 1s a summary of the report of proceedings
of the F/B drifters furnished by Captai n A/P Dover:
26th May
Eileen Emma and Netsukis returned to
Dover from Dunkirk. The Gervais
Rentoul remained in Dunkirk.
Shipmates, Girl Pamela, Lord Howe and
Young Mun returned to harbour from
minefield patrols.
27th May
p.m.
17 F/B drifters sailed for Dunkirk from
Dover, 1.e. all except the Gervais
Rentoul and The Boys.
1800
On approaching the outer channel at
Dunkirk, enemy A/C dropped 16 bombs.
As the result of near misses, Boy Roy
(Skipper E.F. Dettman, R.N.R.)
commenced to sink and was beached in
Dunkirk harbour, (1) Paxton (Lt. Cdr.
R.M. Prior R.N. and Skipper A.M.
Lovis R.N.R.) started a severe leak
and was scuttled alongside the quay.(2)

During the night the drifters evacuated
about 2000 troops from the beach 3
miles east of Dunkirk, using ship's
dinghies.

The drifters (including the Gervais
Rentoul) returned to Dover and
disembarked about 2000 troops.

Dunkirk, towing boats for beach work;
Eileen Emma, Girl Pamela, Golden Gift

Howe, Midas and Netsukis.

was sunk by the M/S Lydd at the
entrance to Dunkirk.

and Yorkshire Lass.
The Gervais Rentoul and Eileen Emma
returned to Dover damaged and un-
seaworthy after collisions.

"Drifters returned to Dover landing
1800 men". They were all brought
to immediate notice for a further

trip to Dunkirk, and Shipmates,
Lord Howard, Lord Howe, Golden
Sunbeam, Midas, Golden Gift, Girl
Gladys, Forecast and Yorkshire Lass,
sailed.

They went alongside the east pier,
filled up with (mostly) French troops
and sailed for Dover.
3rd June

Yorkshire Lass, disabled and full of
troops, was taken in tow by the tug
Sun XV.

Yorkshire Lass was able to proceed
under her own power for Dover.

Drifters landed approximately 1600
French troops at Dover.

The following drifters sailed for
Dunkirk (see Appx. K, signals K.17a
and K.17b): Midas, Lord Howard,
Lord Howe, Ut Prosim, Forecast,
Netsukis, Shipmates, Young Mun, and
Torbay II.
All drifters returned from Dunkirk and

landed 1900 men at Dover, most of whom
were French.

Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "I" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "T" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler

proceeded in H.M. Tra wlor "LORD HOWE" (Slapper William Honry
I have the honour to report that on 24th May, 1040, I

decided to approach the entrance to the Port from the North.
Under a hoavy barrage of high explosive and shraphol fire, the
skipper of the travler succeeded in entering the port and taking
up position alongside the Quai Maritime Southern ond. As
there WELS no labour or assistance to be obtained from the quay,
the crew of the trawler started to discharge the cargo of
ammunition. This entailed hauling the boxes of amamition by
hand from the deck of the trawler to the top of the quay - &
distance of somo 22-ft. and dragging them across the quay to a
place of safety - the whole proceeding under a devastating fire
from the enemy. There was no protection of any sort, and none
of the crow was equipped with steel holmets. The discharge
continued orderly and efficiently until ordered to stop by
Commodore Gandell, R.N., who decided that, as all the .305
ammunition had boon discharged, the danger was too great, and he
ordered the trawler to sea. Again, the tra wler came under a
heavy direct fire from the enemy, but, with great skill, and
zigzagging, the skipper succeeded in bringing his ship safely
out of danger.

every possible assistance, onabling no to report to Commodore

the port. This plan showed the approximate positions of the
enemy and his batterios, which were imediately shelled by the
"GREYHOUND" to relieve the pressure on our defenses.

Skipper William Henry Pollook.
This Trawler was ordered to Calais with a cargo of
ammunition. On approaching the Port she was heavily shelled
by B. battery concealed among the sand dunes to the South of the

trawler drew off and reported to Val. Dovor. On receiving the
order "Proceed to Calais immediately", it was decided to approach
the entrance to the Port from the North.
Under a heavy barrage of H.E. and shrapnel fire the
Skipper of the trawler succeeded in entering the port and taking
up position alongside the Quai Maritime Eastern end. As there
was no labour or assistance to be obtained from the Quai, the crow
of the trawler started to discharge the cargo of ammition. This
entailed hauling the boxes of ammunition by hand from the deek of
the trawler to the top of the Quai, a distance of some 22 feet,
and dragging them across the Quai to a place of safety - the whole
proceeding under a devastating fire from the onemy. There was
no protection of any sort and none of the crow were equipped with
steel helmets. The discharge continued orderly and efficiently
until ordered to stop by Commodore Gandell, R.N., who decided that
the danger was too great, and sent the trawler to SCD. Again the
trawler came under a heavy direct fire from the onemy, but with
great skill the Skipper succeeded in bringing his ship safely out
of danger.
I cannot too highly commend Skipper W.H. Pollock, who in
addition to his duty with regard to his cargo, gave me every possible
assistance, enabling me to report to Commodore Gandell, R.N., also
contacting H.M.S. "GREYHOUND" who with the aid of a plan given to
me by the Commodore was able to shell the Port and so relieve the
pressure on our Troops.

happen, my last hope of reaching the coast would be gone".'
In order to secure the British northern flank Lord Gort decided to issue
orders for the occupation, as quickly as troops could be made available, of the
line of the Ypres - Comines canal and the positions covering Ypres. In the
absence of General Blanchard, who was visiting the Belgian G.Q.G. at Bruges,
Lord Gort communicated this decision that evening to the Headquarters of
the French First Group of Armies.¹
The necessity of evacuation was becoming a matter of paramount immediacy.
British destroyers bombard suburb of Calais
Meanwhile, on the 25th May, the trawler Lord Howe sailed to Calais with a
cargo of ammunition². She entered the port and discharged part of her cargo
in the face of heavy enemy fire from the dunes to the southward. In view of
the risk involved, Commodore W. P. Gandell, R.N. (P.S.T.O., French Ports),
who was on the quay, then ordered the Lord Howe to sail.
Outside Calais the destroyer Greyhound closed the Lord Howe, which was
carrying a request for bombardment support of the town. At the same time,
the Greyhound received a signal from the Vice-Admiral, Dover, ordering the
bombardment of the Calais suburb of St. Pierre. The Greyhound opened fire,
and at 2000, an H.A. battery east of Sangatte registered a hit on her, killing
2 and wounding 3. About this time the destroyer Grafton arrived and also
opened fire. The 2 destroyers returned to Dover as darkness set in.³
Evacuation of Calais countermanded
At 2130 a force of seven trawlers⁴, three yachts⁵ and two drifters⁶, sailed for
Calais road, ready to evacuate troops from Calais, the moment an order was
received to do so. Five of the trawlers towed motor boats. Commander
W. V. H. Harris, R.N. (Commander M/S, Dover), in the Grey Mist, was in
command. The destroyers Windsor and Verity left Dover at 2300, to cover
the withdrawal of this force.
On arrival off Calais, two of the motor boats were ordered into Calais harbour.
At about 0300/26, a signal was received that Calais was to be held at all costs;
furthermore, it was ordered that this signal was to be sent by hand to the
Brigadier commanding on shore. The Conidaw went in to deliver the signal.
All ships were then ordered back to the Downs, but the Botanic and Maretta
remained behind until the two motor boats and the Conidaw returned.⁷
The Botanic and Maretta were damaged by gunfire when returning on the
26th May, and were unable to take part in Operation "Dynamo".

meantime at 2025, the Vice-Admiral, Dover, received another signal sent only
a few minutes later :
" Port continuously bombed all day and on fire. Embarkation possible only
from beaches east of harbour A.B.C.D.¹ Send all ships and passenger ships
there to anchor. Am ordering Wolfhound to load there and sail. T.O.O.2005."
To the Vice-Admiral, Dover, the situation must have appeared critical
when, later that evening, he received a report from two military officers from
G.H.Q., that the plight of the B.E.F. was precarious and that the enemy might,
indeed, succeed in cutting it off from Dunkirk.²
All ships diverted to the beaches
Such was the grim picture presenting itself to the Vice-Admiral, Dover, that
night - the B.E.F. in grave and very real danger of being cut off altogether from
Dunkirk, and possibly only a bare 24 hours available for its evacuation. Admiral
Ramsay reacted to these dire tidings with characteristic drive and energy,
and a period of intense activity ensued. Every effort was concentrated on
sending as many craft as possible to the beaches without delay². Order
followed order in rapid succession. Personnel ships were diverted to the
beach, code letters A, B, C and D (i.e. Malo beach). Four paddle minesweepers³
were sailed from the Downs to La Panne beach. Destroyers were rushed to the
beaches and urged to embark as many British troops as possible, as this was
the last chance of saving them "; the Gallant, and Vivacious, then on patrol,
the Windsor, Vimy, Anthony, Impulsive, Sabre and the cruiser Calcutta, were
all ordered to proceed with the utmost despatch to the beach at Malo-les-Bains
and the beach at Zuydcoote, just east of it; the Grafton and Greyhound, on
patrol between Fairy Bank and Kwint Bank buoys, and the Wakeful, just
arrived at Dover from Plymouth, were hurried to the beach at La Panne.
The wording of some of the signals4 conveying these orders reflects the
desperation felt that night, a desperation which, in spite of the course of sub-
sequent events, was at the time only too well-founded. " Had the situation
appeared less critical," observes Admiral Ramsay, an organised flow of large
and small craft, working in reliefs, would have been arranged."⁵
Yet a further batch of vessels arrived off the beaches that evening; the
17 available flare-burning drifters of the Dover Auxiliary Patrol⁶ had sailed
for Dunkirk during the afternoon, and on arriving were diverted to the beaches
by the Wolfhound, in accordance with a signal from the Vice-Admiral, Dover⁷,
and anchored close inshore. The boats from the Wolfhound and Wolsey, and

Thursday, 30th May.
9. 800 troops were landed at Dover during the forenoon from
Drifters returning from Dunkirk. A/S Trawler "Kingston Andalusite"
reported what was considered a successful attack on a submarine off
"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "T" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "I" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler

I have the honour to report that on 24th May, 1940, I
proceeded in H.M. Tra wlor "LORD HOWE" (Slapper William Honry
Pollock), which was ordered to Calais with a cargo of summition.
On approaching the Fort she WES heavily sholled by a battory
concealed among the send dunos to the South of the Port.
2.
Finding it almost impossible to force an entrance, the
trawler drow off and reported to Vice-Admiral, Dover. On
receiving the order: "Procced to Calais immediately," It was
decided to approach the entrance to the Port from the North.
Under a hoavy barrage of high explosive and shraphol fire, the
skipper of the trawler succeeded in entering the port and taking
up position alongside the Quai Maritime Southern ond. As
there WELS no labour or assistance to be obtained from the quay,
the crow of the trawler started to discharge the cargo of
ammunition. This entailed hauling the boxes of amamition by
hand from the deck of the trawler to the top of the quay &
distance of somo 22-ft. and dragging them across the quay to a
place of safety the whole proceeding under a devastating fire
from the enemy. There was no protection of any sort, and none
of the crow was equipped with steel helmsts. The discharge
continued orderly and efficiently until ordered to stop by
Commodore Gandell, R.N., who decided that, as all the .305
ammunition had boon discharged, the danger was too great, and he
ordered the trawler to sea. Again, the tra wler came under a
heavy direct fire from the enemy, but, with great skill, and
zigzagging, the skipper succeeded in bringing his ship safely
out of danger.

the entrance to the Port from the North.

up position alongside the Quai Maritime Eastern end. As there
was no labour or assistance to be obtained from the Quai, the grow
of the trawler started to discharge the cargo of ammunition. This
entailed hauling the boxes of ammunition by hand from the deek of
the trawler to the top of the Quai, a distance of some 22 feet,
and dragging them across the Quai to a place of safety - the whole
proceeding under a devastating fire from the onemy. There was
