7 potential matching records have been identified.
These records may contain vessel particulars, reported movements, participation assessments, named personnel and source references. A match does not by itself prove that the vessel participated in Operation Dynamo.
“Potential match” means a candidate returned by one or more indexing rules; it is not necessarily an exact identity match. Depending on the source, matching may use a normalised vessel name, a partial text or OCR hit, an alias, or related metadata. Roman-numeral suffixes such as I, II, III, IV and V may be absent, misread or separated from the base name, so records for similarly named vessels can be grouped incorrectly. Multi-word names can also produce candidates where only one significant word matches. Confirm the full name, numeral, vessel type, dimensions, builder, ownership, dates and source context before treating two records as the same vessel.
We are compiling and checking transcriptions, metadata, vessel-name matches, source references and reuse permissions before publishing further detail. This work helps prevent incomplete OCR, historic spelling variations or unverified associations from being presented as established fact.
Account registrations and access to these developing records are temporarily unavailable. Existing account holders may log in, and everyone can join the newsletter for publication updates.
0 potential matching records have currently been identified.
Further indexing may identify service-list entries, vessel metadata, source-page references and protected full-size document images. The absence of a current match does not establish that no relevant source exists.

These details have been aggregated from multiple sources and may include contemporary records, later recollections, claims or assertions for which no corroborating evidence has been identified. Inclusion does not establish that any account or assertion is accurate. CONFIDENTIAL. 154 Page 35. 156 Operation "DYNAMO" - Narrative of Events. Inshore Flotillæsand Naval Shore Parties (continued) boats which had been cast away by the soldiers on disembarkation. 106. By the night of the 30th/31st a considerable number of collapsible boats and pontoons had been received from the Royal Engineers of the B.E.F. These were of great assistance and paddled off about 10 men in each trip, but again, in spite of all efforts, in the vast majority of cases, the soldiers left these craft when they arrived at the offshore ship. 107. Much of the most meritorious work of lifting off the beaches was done by the offshore warships' own boats, who were tireless in their efforts. All small pulling boats and small power boats were lowered and were lent from ship to ship when their own parent ship left the coast to unload at a United Kingdom port. In addition, H.M. ships seized drifting and abandoned boats as opportunity offered and manned them up with boat keepers. Owing to the physical exhaustion of these boats' crews after hours of work, relief crews of stokers were frequently provided from amongst the many volunteers that came forth. 108. A typical example of dogged work by a ship's boat was afforded by the action of JAVELIN's and JAGUAR's boats off Bray beach in the afternoon of 28/5. When their two motor cutters and two whalers first grounded offshore they were rushed and swamped by soldiers. Order being restored the boats had to be baled out and the wet engines restarted, following which) 700 troops were embarked by these few boats in a short time during continuous bombing attacks. 109. Of the power boats available by far the most useful and suitable were the A.L.Cs., M.L.Cs. and the small type of R.N.L.I. life-boat. The high speed service motor boats such as DOLPHIN's and EXCELLENT's boats and the R.A.F. Seaplane tenders proved unsuitable for work in shallow waters on a lee shore owing to the vulnerability of their propellers and rudders and their poor manoeuvring powers at low speeds. 110. Of the civilian manned craft one of the best performances was that of the London Fire Brigade fire float MASSEY SHAW. All the volunteer crew were members of the London Fire Brigade or Auxiliary Fire Service and succeeded in doing 4 round trips to the beaches in their well-found craft. In contrast to this performance and that also of the R.N.L.I. crews of the Ramsgate and Margate life-boats, who took their boats over to Dunkirk, no volunteers, except for the coxswain and engineer of the Dover life-boat, were forthcoming from the R.N.L.I. crews of the other life-boats, which were accordingly manned by R.N. crews. Also it must be noted that civilian craft of such flotillas as the Rye fishing fleet did not relish the idea of carrying out ferry- ing work off the Flanders coast. Fishing boats and pleasure boats from as far along the south coast as Brixham and Dartmouth arrived at various times up to p.m. 30/5, but again the civilian crews were not prepared to proceed to Dunkirk. Accordingly, the most suitable of such boats as could be manned by the Naval personnel available were taken up, but the remainder took no part in the operations. 111./

THE FINAL NIGHT, 3RD-4TH JUNE CHAP. XII The Locust also, after embarking troops ferried out to her from 2300, came alongside the East Pier at 0225, and when she sailed ten minutes later had on board 196 troops. Mining of the Emile Deschamps The personnel vessel King George V which left the East Pier about 0300 with 817 troops, ran into thick fog off the English coast. About 0615, near the Elbow Buoy 21/2 miles east of the North Foreland, she passed a "small French naval vessel." Suddenly there was a heavy explosion astern of her, and within a minute the vessel had sunk. The small French ship was the Fleet Auxiliary Emile Deschamps which had sailed from Dunkirk for England at about 2100 on 3rd June, crowded with troops and refugees. About 0558 the minesweeper Albury, 5 cables ahead of her, gave her a course for the North Goodwin Light Vessel, which the French ship had missed. A quarter of an hour later the Emile Deschamps struck the magnetic mine which sank her. Several vessels were near and hastened to rescue the survivors. The fire- float Massey Shaw, on passage from Ramsgate to London, was only 200 yards away at the time and picked up 40, reported to be all sailors, which she trans- ferred to the Albury. The King George V lowered four boats and picked up 67. The minesweeper Kellett, called up by signal from the Albury, rescued some very badly injured people as did also H.M.S. Nelson's motor boat, whose log contains the apparently, but no doubt unintentionally, casual entry ' 2400. L/Sea. Eggington lost overboard with candle-lantern." Fog came down again as the rescue operations were completed. Among the survivors landed at Margate were 7 French women and a boy. Blocking Operation repeated night 3rd-4th June Owing to the failure of the blocking operation of the previous night to close the port, the Admiralty, during the forenoon of the 3rd June, ordered it to be repeated on this night with Admiral Abrial's concurrence. Captain E. Danger- field, R.N. was again in charge. The ships employed were as follows :- destroyer : Shikari; coastal craft: M. A./S. B. 10, M.T.B. 107 blockships Gourko, 1975 tons, built 1911, Moyle, 1761 tons, built 1907, Pacifico, 687 tons, built 1905. The force sailed from the Downs at 2030 on the 3rd by Route Z, M.T.B. 107 being in tow of the Shikari, and anchored at 0130 on the 4th between No. 14 W and 16 W buoys, near the entrance to Dunkirk harbour. At 0230 Captain Dangerfield, who had transferred to M. A/S. B. 10 ordered the ships to weigh and the Shikari proceeded to lead them to the entrance. The Gourko's anchor was barely aweigh when a violent explosion occurred aft, caused, it is reported, by a magnetic mine, although the ship was degaussed and had been wiped in Chatham Dockyard as recently as the 31st May. The Gourko began to sink rapidly and was ordered to be abandoned. She sank stern first in 3 minutes. M. A/S. B. 10 took off 9 survivors and transferred them to the Shikari. M.T.B. 107 rescued 7 others, some of them from the water. One of the crew was missing, and 8 were wounded. Meanwhile, the other two blockships carried on with the operation. The 119

MASSEY RELiance 3811 SHOULD BEADDRESSED London Fire Busigade, Forces, Headquarters, 900 XXXXX QUOTING- M/RCC. to the Chief Commander, Albert Embankment, S.E.1 London Fire Forces. STRay. Entered in Day Book 1st December, 1941. Dear Sir, Evacuation of the B.E.F. from Dunkirk. I understand that you have asked the owners of all boats requisitioned in May, 1940, to assist in the evacuation of the B.E.F from Dunkirk to forward to you the available particulars of the part they played in the operations. You may, therefore, be interested to receive a brief report of the activities of the fire boat, "Massey Shaw", although the boat was not requisitioned by you. On Thursday, 30th May, 1940, the Under Secretary of State, Home Office, informed the Officer Commanding, London Fire Brigade, that the assistance of a fire boat might be required at Dunkirk. The Chairman of the Civil Defence Committee of the London County Council gave his approval and it was decided that the "Massey Shaw" should undertake the work. She is a 75 ft. steel fire boat, constructed for fire-fighting in the River Thames with a beam of 13 ft. 6 ins. and a 3 ft. 9 ins. draft, equipped with Diesel engines for propulsion and driving the fire pumps. The "Massey Shaw" arrived at Ramsgate with a London Fire Service volunteer crew on 31st May, but found that fire-fighting operations at Dunkirk were impracticable. The fire boat was, therefore, ordered to Dunkirk by a senior Naval officer at 1400 hour to assist in the evacuation of troops. Between arrival at Dunkirk at 1900 hours and the departure for Ramsgate at 0400 hours on 1st June, 60 troops were taken aboard from the beaches about 3 miles east of the mole, and were safely disembarked at Ramsgate at 0645 hours. The crew consisted of 13 London Fire Service personnel and Naval Sub-Lieutenant.
