that 3 of the M/L's had had engine
trouble and had returned to harbour.

Saw a cruiser[ loaded with troops.
She had been damaged aft by shell
fire.

One of the M/L's was damaged in
collision with the Triton at this
time. Except for that, "all five of
us had crossed safely".

Arrived off beach near La Panne.
Commenced towing boat loads of
troops to trawlers and destroyers.
The Silver Queen distributed petrol
supplies.

Commodore G.O. Stephenson came on
board.

The Commodore landed on the beach,
but returned after an hour.

Went alongside a destroyer [the
Windsor and embarked R.A. Dover
and his Chief of Staff. Closed
the surf to land him by his
whaler which was in tow, but R.A.
Dover did not land. The Triton
took him back to the destroyer.
The Triton continued ferrying and
towing.

Lieut. Irving rescued 7 soldiers from
drowning.

The Triton went aground.

Cdre. Stephenson transferred to a
"M.T.B. " [the M/Y Bounty].

Heavy shelling was taking place and
ships moved away from La Panne.
The Triton moved to Dunkirk with
a heavy boat load of troops in tow.
Heavy air attack. The M/V "Prince
of Wales" [i.e. the New Prince of
Wales] was hit. Embarked from her 2
wounded officers and 2 ratings.
She was sinking slowly and had 2
dead on board.
Picked up the troops from a heavily

loaded boat which had capsized. A
rope fouled the Triton's rudder and
one propeller. Managed to get
alongside the G/B Mosquito, and
transferred the troops and wounded
to her. Could not clear the rope.
Taken in tow by the yacht Caleta,
but the tow parted and the Triton
was abandoned.

Sir,
I have the honour to forward the narrative of
events whilst in command of m.v. "NEW PRINCE OF WALES"
Bray. until she was believed sunk at 1415 at the beaches near
A.M. Wednesday 29th May I was ordered to proceed
to Sheerness to report to the Commodore at H.M.S. "WILDFIRE"
Arrived Sheerness about 1700 was ordered to proceed in
m.v. "NEW PRINCE OF WALES" leading flotilla of seven light
craft. Left camber at H.M.S. "WILDFIRE" proceeded to sea
through boom. Two boats appeared to be in difficulties
and did not leave the boom. I was met by escort yacht
and formed astern of her.
Had to slow down to keep boats in company. First
three boats astern kept good station, remaining one fell
astern but owing to urgency of getting boats to destination
flotilla did not decrease speed any further.
About 2200 yacht escort was challenged from shore.
She informed me an officer was required to go in to
Margate for orders, so proceeded myself in fast motor boat
"MARSAYRA". Established my identity and was told to
push on to Ramsgate. While away one boat "QUEEN
BOADACEA" broke down, after some delay she was taken in
tow by escort yacht. My port engine broke down, speed.
greatly reduced. One boat lost contact in darkness. I
went back to look for her off Longrose, search
unsuccessful, rejoined escort. Fog came down at dawn and
escort anchored with "NEW PRINCE OF WALES", "QUEEN BOADACEA"
and "MARSAYRA", off Ramsgate exact position uncertain.
After an hour fog cleared enough to show buoy ahead so
proceeded with "MARSAYRA" in company escort yacht following
with "QUEEN BOADACEA". Engines misfiring badly and
stopped just outside Ramsgate, anchored and proceeded into
harbour in "MARSAYRU". Reported to Naval Officer-in-
Charge Ramsgate received charts and orders to proceed to
beaches between Bray and La Panne and to carry on
ferrying troops from shore to ships until only enough fuel
remained to return. Boats were towed in, repairs started
on "NEW PRINCE OF WALES" immediately.
Engines ready for use at 1630 so proceeded to sea 30/5
at once by route 'X' for Dunkerque. Arrived off French
coast 2230 (Thursday 30th). Port engine failed again
shortly after turning parallel to coast. Dunkerque burning
fiercely and heavy pall of smoke covered the channel to the
borth. Endeavoured to find beach with boat hardly making
eny way through the water. Attempts to locate troops were
insuccessful and I was lost in smoke, saw green light buoy

"NEW PRINCE OF WALES" again after she was hit.
Shortly afterward I managed to obtain sight with
one eye and took charge of the wheel as the H.O. rating
did not appear to know how to handle her. This left
her Captain an R.N.R. Lieutenant free to direct
operations, we proceeded to carry on evacuating
military who were swimming in the sea. After about forty
five minutes, the launch being loaded to full capacity
we went alongside H.M.S. "MOSQUITO" where my crew and
military were embarked.
on arrival on board I was given a morphia
injection and remember nothing further until arrival in
Dover 0700 Saturday, 1st June.
I should like to bring to your notice for
favourable recommendation E.R.A. (5th class) White who
long continuous hours in an endeavour to maintain his
enginess in running order under most difficult conditions;
also the stoker whose name I cannot recall who untiringly
assisted the above.

Dover. Eventually a motor yacht got us in tow and took us to
Commander Troup went with the fast boats to the outer
- 343
port. He made himself piermaster on the western mole
and conducted the embarkation of about 10,000 French
troops. He also had some anxious moments, as the boat
which was to fetch him broke down. Another turned up
in which he embarked with a French General Lucas and
many StafffOfficers and men; and thus had the honour of
being the last man to leave Dunkirk.
12. As Officers and Coxswains pass through Sheerness,
endeavour is being made to extract full accounts of their
adventures. N.O.I.C. Ramsgate is doing the same. These
reports are being forwarded to Vice Admiral, Dover, but
copies of those obtained here are attached. Even so it
will be impossible to do justice to the services of these
young Officers, ratings and volunteers, most of whom were
acting independently, without anyone to see how they
conducted themselves. A list of those who came under my
personal observation is attached.
13. Until all reports have been compared and lists of
Officers, men, and volunteers going out and returning
have been checked, the number of casualties remains
unscertain. Many boats have had to be abandoned owing
to grounding, collision or fouled propellers, but in
most cases the crews transferred to other craft,
One craft is known to have been sunk by bomb.
"New Prince of Wales". Large motor craft. Officer
in command, Sub Lieut. .L.H. Bennett, R.N., now in R.N.
S.P.H.E.
Hospital, Chatham. Two ratings are believed to have been
killed, but I have not been able to get this confirmed.
Several motor boats sailed direct from Southend for
the beaches with volunteer crews who had not signed on.
There may be others, of which there will be no record.
Considering the heavy bombing, shelling and machine
gun fire experienced by many of the boats, the casualties
seem to be lighter than might well have been expected.
14. It would be impossible to speak too highly of the
spirit which has animated all those who have been concerned
in "Dynamo". Everyone tried to do their best for the Armies
at Dunkirk, and those whose fortunes it was to get across
and bring some of them off, will always look back on it with
deep satisfaction. Some of the crews got their boats as far
as Ramsgate, only to find that owing to the shortcomings of
their vessels, they could get no further, but many of them
succeeded in finding another boat with room for them.
A young Able Seaman, whose boat sank after bringing
off 1,000 men, did much, by his sheerful talk and bearing,
to bring about this happy result. His name is
Here at Sheerness the Commodore and his staff, H.M.S.
"Wildfire", and the dockyard did all that man could do to
hasten the preparation and sailing of the varied fleet of
craft which arrived here, some of them needing much attention.
With the exception of the Thames steamers, which could not
run in salt water, though they had a good try at it, very
few craft failed to achieve at least one trip to the French
coast. Many men from the "Wildfire" offered their would services,
have done so had it been possible to spare their services.

one eye and took charge of the wheel as the H.O. rating

Eventually a motor yacht got us in tow and took us to
Dover.
Commander Troup went with the fast boats to the outer
- 343
port. He made himself piermaster on the western mole
and conducted the embarkation of about 10,000 French
troops. He also had some anxious moments, as the boat
which was to fetch him broke down. Another turned up
in which he embarked with a French General Lucas and
many StafffOfficers and men; and thus had the honour of
being the last man to leave Dunkirk.
12. As Officers and Coxswains pass through Sheerness,
endeavour is being made to extract full accounts of their
adventures. N.O.I.C. Ramsgate is doing the same. These
reports are being forwarded to Vice Admiral, Dover, but
copies of those obtained here are attached. Even so it
will be impossible to do justice to the services of these
young Officers, ratings and volunteers, most of whom were
acting independently, without anyone to see how they
conducted themselves. A list of those who came under my
personal observation is attached.
13. Until all reports have been compared and lists of
Officers, men, and volunteers going out and returning
have been checked, the number of casualties remains
unscertain. Many boats have had to be abandoned owing
to grounding, collision or fouled' propellers, but in
most cases the crews transferred to other craft,
One craft is known to have been sunk by bomb.
"New Prince of Wales". Large motor craft. Officer
in command, Sub Lieut.P.L.H. Bennett, R.N., now in R.N.
S.P.H.E.
Hospital, Chatham. Two ratings are believed to have been
killed, but I have not been able to get this confirmed.
Several motor boats sailed direct from Southend for
the beaches with volunteer crews who had not signed on.
There may be others, of which there will be no record.
Considering the heavy bombing, shelling and machine
gun fire experienced by many of the boats, the casualties
seem to be lighter than might well have been expected.
14. It would be impossible to speak too highly of the
spirit which has animated all those who have been concerned
in "Dynamo". Everyone tried to do their best for the Armies
at Dunkirk, and those whose fortunes it was to get across
and bring some of them off, will always look back on it with
deep satisfaction. Some of the crews got their boats as far
as Ramsgate, only to find that owing to the shortcomings of
their vessels, they could get no further, but many of them
succeeded in finding another boat with room for them.
A young Able Seaman, whose boat sank after bringing
off 1,000 men, did much, by his sheerful talk and bearing,
to bring about this happy result. His name is
Here at Sheerness the Commodore and his staff, H.M.S.
"Wildfire", and the dockyard did all that man could do to
hasten the preparation and sailing of the varied fleet of
craft which arrived here, some of them needing much attention.
With the exception of the Thames steamers, which could not
run in salt water, though they had a good try at it, very
few craft failed to achieve at least one trip to the French
coast. Many men from the "Wildfire" offered their services,
though only a few could be allowed to go, and more would
have done so had it been possible to spare their services
