A/S TRAWLERS
The following is a summary of the report of proceedings
of the 14 A/S trawlers of the Dover Auxiliary Patrol (q.v.).
26th Lay
A/S truwlers were placed to cover the
N.W. half of the minefield loops.
Saon examined Boulogne coast for
groups of soldiers. None found.
27th May
Six A/S trawlers on minefield patrol
from "A" to "F" buoys. Three groups
of A/S trawlers suiled for position
between the Downs and "R", "S" and
"I" buoys to cover the return of
vessels from Dunkirk.

R.A. Dover, his staff, and Capt. Howson
transferred to the dr. Express at about 0130;
and Captain Howson transferred to the tr. Olvina
off Bray at 0300; later, still off Bray, he
transferred to the dr. Scimitar's M/B.
The 9 yachts of the Portsmouth Inner Patrol
arrived at 0610(1) and Capt. Howson transferred
to the Inner Patrol Yacht Ankh, and used her
as his H.Q. for the remainder of the day.
During the forenoon there were ample ships for
embarkation but a lop had developed which
seriously hampered heavily laden boats. With
the falling tide a considerable number of boats
grounded and remained ashore till the afternoon,
but thanks to the organisation of boat keepers,
few were left to drift.
At La Panne, there appears to have been a great
shortage of boats and power boats, but at Bray
there was a great improvement on the previous
day.
At noon the lop subsided. The G/B Mosquito
anchored close to Bray pier, and embarkation
accelerated rapidly.
An enemy gun beyond La Panne opened up on the
Mosquito and other craft, forcing them to
withdraw to the westward. Some 30 enemy
bombers escorted by many fighters appeared at
1930. Most of them went on to bomb Dunkirk;
the remainder bombed the Mosquito and other
craft in the vicinity.
The Ankh was damaged by a near miss and started
making water forward and through the stern glands
Being of the opinion that the Ankh was unlikely
to stand up to further "rough treatment", Capt.
Howson decided at about 2000 to return to
Dover, and ordered the yacht Amulree to keep
company. Being some 2 or 3 miles to seaward,
in the failing light, Ankh was unable to pass
a message to R.A. Dover's flagship [at this time
the dr. Keith].
Shortly after, the Inner Patrol yachts Caryanda
and Eilla II 2) closed the Ankh; the former
reported that she needed fuel, the latter that
she was leaking, had slipped her astern gear,
and also needed lubricating oil.
As the fuel drifters Lord Keith and Lord
Collingwood, which had been promised, had not
turned up, the Caryanda was ordered to Dover to
refuel.
The Eilla II was ordered to close destroyers
inshore, if she had fuel; in the event, she too
proceeded to Dover.
1st June
At 0145, the escorting yacht Amulree was rammed
by the dr. Vimy in the Downs and sunk; her
crew were picked up.
The Ankh, which had kept down the water by baling
arrived at Dover at 0815. Capt. Howson reported
to V.A. Dover's office and requested to return
to the beaches; he was however in an extremely
fatigued condition and had completely lost his
voice.
(1) Capt. Howson says there were 10 or 12 yachts, and that he
directed half of them to work off Bray and half off La Panne.
Actually, 3 of the I.P. yachts worked off La Panne and six

June 1940).

during attack. Complete Jam resulted. Later saw G.M. who
declared nothing could be done. Took cover for 3rd. attack.
Watched destruction of A/S fannel. Tas ordered by 1st. Lieut. to
load.Army boat and supervise its manning. Accompanied Sub. Lt.
Ellis to Captain's cabin to get C.B's for destruction. Just
reached deck when last attack started. Took cover by Y gun and
inside after screen. On order to abandon ship, saw boat manned,
threw some C.B's which I saw on U.D. over the side and then
jumped for boat. A/S C.B's were not destroyed.

At the beginning of the first attack I was on the

Planes were sighted astern, angle of sight about 60° and at no
time was the Director Layer able to report Director on during
this attack due to the A of S being too great. Consequently no
executive order to shoot was given.
After this attack I was told by the Captain to take the
motor boat away and commandere two fishing smacks which were
passing 12 miles away. The first of these was abandoned and I
returned in the second and stood by to tow. A wire was passed
and made fast round a stout bean in the smack, which carried away
some 15 minutes later. A second wire was then made fast round the
foremast but as the tow was not clear of the deck house, the smack
veered round and had to be pulled back into position by the motor
boat. An additional rope was passed and made fast on the other
quarter and the ship was turned through about 60 degrees., but the
smack was again in the wrong position for towing, being alongside
the forecastle bowe pointing aft. At this point second bombing
attack took place and I slipped tow and stood off to about 1 mile,
the smack being machine-gunned by four planes. When attack was
over I returned and reconnected tow which later parted due to
taking up the slack too vaolently. This was due to the language
difficulty of giving orders to the French crew of the smack, the
only other man on board the smack being an R.A.P. pilot. A
further bombing attack started, the final one, and I again stood
off from the ship. When I returned the crew was abandoning ship
and I picked up all men in the water, two Carley floats, one RE
pontoon and some men from each whaler. At this point, with 70
men aboard, Whitehall appeared in the distance and we made out
to intercept her, using the smack's airen and the French ensign
half way up the foremast. We met her about 12 miles away and
passed information to her and requested her to collect men from
remaining boats. I then set out on a course for England and in
mid-chainel we transferred everyone to H.M. Trawler Olvina.

H.M.S.SCIMITAR...REPORT OF PROCEEDINGS
Sir,
Ihave the honour to report on the proceedings of H.M. ship
under my command between 26th May and 4th June as follows.
2. I received orders to sail for Dover at noon/28th
and I arrived at Dover at about 2000 28th May. At about 2100 I
was ordered to leave under the orders of Captain (D) 16 in
"Malcolm". On arrival at Bray at about 0130 I was ordered to
proceed a mile to the eastward and send in boats. My motor boat
with whaler in tow proceeded inshore under Lieutenant J.R.G
Trechman and embarked troops. After about two hours my whaler
was swamped inshore due to being rushed by troops. My motor
boat continued to assist in towing and I embarked troops from
various other boats. Later I secured another whaler and
embarkation proceeded more rapidly.
3. At about 1230/29 I considered the ship was full
(about 350 troops) and I was ordered to return to Dover. I
sailed by route Y in company WIth "Shikari". I arrived at Dover
at about 1630/29 and disembarked troops and then proceeded to
oil.
4. I sailed for Dunkirk again at about 2000/29,
starting via route Y, joining "Worcester" and then proceeding
via route X to the beaches East of Bray. Good progress was made
during the night embarking troops using our own motor boat and
captured whaler and various other boats. In the morning I had
350 troops on board and proceeded via route X leaving my motor
boat and whaler inshore under the command of Hidshipman Ball
R.N.R. Fog patches were encountered on the way back and I
arrived at Dover at about 1000/30.
5. After disembarking troops I sailed again at about
1130 and was ordered to go to Dunkirk harbour via route 8. I
arrived and went alongside at about 1330/30 and embarked about
500 troops very quickly. I returned via route $ being shelled
and bombed off Calais. The shelling was of small calibre but
fairly accurate; no damage was sustained. I arrived at Dover at
about 1630/30 and disembarked troops.
6. I sailed again about 1830/30 for La Panne via
route X. Near Dunkirk 1 sighted my motor boat and recalled it.
After waiting sometime at La Panne, where there were several other
ships, I was ordered by "Worcester" to go to Bray. I collected a
string of derelict boats and sent them in my motor boat
under Sub Lieutenant Coldwell. Good progress was made in
embarking troops and at about 0600/31 I had 500 on board and
sailed after transferring my motor boat and string of other boats
to the trawler "Olvina". I proceeded via route X to Dover in
company with "Harvester".
7. I arrived at Dover at about 0930/31 and after
disembarking troops sailed again about 1030. Whilst proceeding

"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "I" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "T" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",

Anchor was weighed at 2221, and we steamed to Bray beaches
without encountering the M.T.B. Pilotage was somewhat
hazardous in the intense darkness, owing to wrecks obstruct-
ing the channel, and at 2345 the anchor was dropped as
close inshore as possible.
The ship's boat was taken away soon after
midnight, and brought off two loads of troops totalling
32, including one stretcher case, which was put aboard a
destroyer. Owing to deterioration of conditions, no more
troops were embarked until daylight, when the boat was
pulled ashore on two more occasions.
At about 0500/31 May, "Sabre" was full of
troops and ready to proceed to England, so it was arranged
that "Olvina" should provide a crew for "Sabre"s" motorboat
and use it for embarking troops. Accordingly, after re-
filling with petrol from "Icarus", the motorboat was manned
and proceeded to tow off ships' boats and Royal Engineer's
pontoon floats from the pier to vessels anchored off. The
pier consisted of motor lorries driven into the sea at low
water, having planks lashed to the roofs. Owing to a
northwesterly breeze, which freshened to force 3/4 at 1100,
only the eastern side of the pier could be used, and some
difficulty was experienced in handling the boats. Probably
about 300 to 350 troops were removed in this manner, of
which 240 were put aboard "Olvina".
No interference by enemy action was experienced
during the embarkation, although enemy aircraft were sand being

survivors from "Basilisk" came alongside in a French fishing
boat, and at 1917 we went alongside "Whitehall" in Dover
harbour and disembarked them.
"Olvina" was in harbour during 2nd and 3rd June,
and on 4th June escorted "Bideford" to Portsmouth thout
incident.

65. Casualties to H.M, Ships during 31st May,
M/S DEVONIA received damage from near miss bombs
whilst off La Panne. About 1600 ship was ordered to be beached.
At 0600 on the 1st, after having destroyed all useful
apparatus, and ammunition put overboard, ship was beached and
abandoned.
M/S HEBE, whilst off Dunkirk, was damaged by enemy
aircraft and returned under own power to Dover.
Destroyer EXPRESS. Damaged by enemy aircraft whilst
off Dunkirk.
Saturday 1st June.

2 Hospital Carriers which had sailed the previous
1/6
evening returned shortly after dawn. Only one had succeeded
in entering Dunkirk Harbour, the other had laid off 4 hours
under heavy fire and returned to Dover. 4 personnel vessels
failed to enter Dunkirk during the night, but succeeded in the
early hours of the morning. One of these, the PRAGUE, was
bombed and severely damaged half-way across on the return
journey, but succeeded in making the Downs with the assistance
of tugs, where troops transferred to other ships particularly
A/S trawlers LADY PHILOMENE and OLVINA. The supply of person-
nel vessels was maintained throughout the day, not without a
series of setbacks caused by 3 ships refusing to sail and by
2 being turned back when on passage, by French Destroyers owing
to heavy bombing and shelling of the approaches to Dunkirk.
Of those that operated during the 24 hours, 1 was sunk, 2
damaged by bombs and shell-fire and 1 by collision.
67. During the middle watch it transpired that no further
troops were attempting to evacuate from La Panne off which
were stationed one paddle minesweeper, a fleet sweeper and two
destroyers, probably due to the heavy shelling from German
guns eastward, and later information was received that the
troops were marching from La Panne through Bray towards
Dunkirk. Accordingly, during the night the Rear Admiral,
Dover, instructed all small craft to move wast, with boats in
tow, towards Dunkirk, and the Vice Admiral directed all ships
under orders for La Panne to other positions further west,
concentrating the main effort on the beach immediately east
of Dunkirk.
To a request from Dunkirk for Hospital Ships, the
Vice Admiral replied at 0715 that the large ship berths
alongside at Dunkirk must be occupied by personnel ships and
the wounded that could conveniently be embarled should go with
personnel. This direction was in accordance with the Govern-
ment policy previously communicated to the Vice Admiral.
68. Soon after dawn enemy aircraft were active and
heavy bombing and machine gun attacks developed at 0500 over
the whole area from Dunkirk to La Panne. A second series of
attacks commenced at 0830 and lasted until 0900, during which
time nearly every ship off the coast was subjected to
intensive bombing and machine gunning, formations of 30 and 40
machines/

After this attack I was told by the Captain to take the
motor boat away and commandere two fishing smacks which were
passing 1/2 miles away. The first of these was abandoned and I
returned in the second and stood by to tow. A wire was passed
and made fast round a stout beam in the smack, which carried away
some 15 minutes later. A second wire was then made fast round the
foremast but as the tow was not clear of the deck house, the smack
veered round and had to be pulled back into position by the motor
boat. An additional rope was passed and made fast on the other
quarter and the ship was turned through about 60 degrees., but the
smack was again in the wrong position for towing, being alongside
the forecastle bows pointing aft. At this point second bombing
attack took place and I slipped tow and stood off to about 1 mile,
the smack being machine-gunned by four planes. When attack was
over I returned and reconnected tow which later parted due to
taking up the slack too väolently. This was due to the language
difficulty of giving orders to the French crew of the smack, the
only other man on board the smack being an R.A.F. pilot. A
further bombing attack started, the final one, and I again stood
off from the ship. When I returned the crew was abandoning ship
and I picked up all men in the water, two Carley floats, one RE
pontoon and some men from each whaler. At this point, with 70
men aboard, Whitehall appeared in the distance and we made out
to intercept her, using the smack's siren and the French ensign
half way up the foremast. We met her about 12 miles away and
passed information to her and requested her to collect men from
remaining boats. I then set out on a course for England and in
mid-chai.nel we transferred everyone to H.M. Trawler Olvina.

Friday 31st May (continued).
65. Casualties to H.M. Ships during 31st May,
M/S DEVONIA received damage from near miss bombs
whilst off La Panne. About 1600 ship was ordered to be beached.
At 0600 on the 1st, after having destroyed all useful
apparatus, and ammunition put overboard, ship was beached and
abandoned.
M/S HEBE, whilst off Dunkirk, was damaged by enemy
aircraft and returned under own power to Dover.

Saturday 1st June.
66. 2 Hospital Carriers which had sailed the previous
evening returned shortly after dawn. Only one had succeeded
in entering Dunkirk Harbour, the other had laid off 4 hours
under heavy fire and returned to Dover. 4 personnel vessels
failed to enter Dunkirk during the night, but succeeded in the
early hours of the morning. One of these, the PRAGUE, was
bombed and severely damaged half-way across on the return
journey, but succeeded in making the Downs with the assistance
of tugs, where troops transferred to other ships particularly
A/S trawlers LADY PHILOMENE and OLVINA. The supply of person-
nel vessels was maintained throughout the day, not without a
series of setbacks caused by 3 ships refusing to sail and by
2 being turned back when on passage, by French Destroyers owing
to heavy bombing and shelling of the approaches to Dunkirk.
Of those that operated during the 24 hours, 1 was sunk, 2
damaged by bombs and shell-fire and 1 by collision.
67. During the middle watch it transpired that no further
troops were attempting to evacuate from La Panne off which
were stationed one paddle minesweeper, a fleet sweeper and two
destroyers, probably due to the heavy shelling from German
guns eastward, and later information was received that the
troops were marching from La Panne through Bray towards
Dunkirk. Accordingly, during the night the Rear Admiral,
Dover, instructed all small craft to move west, with boats in
tow, towards Dunkirk, and the Vice Admiral directed all ships
under orders for La Panne to other positions further west,
concentrating the main effort on the beach immediately east
of Dunkirk.
To a request from Dunkirk for Hospital Ships, the
Vice Admiral replied at 0715 that the large ship berths
alongside at Dunkirk must be occupied by personnel ships and
the wounded that could conveniently be embarked should go with
personnel. This direction was in accordance with the Govern-
ment policy previously communicated to the Vice Admiral.
68. Soon after dawn enemy aircraft were active and
heavy bombing and machine gun attacks developed at 0500 over
the whole area from Dunkirk to La Panne. A second series of
attacks commenced at 0830 and lasted until 0900, during which
time nearly every ship off the coast was subjected to
intensive bombing and machine gunning, formations of 30 and 40
machines/

In accordance with your Memo. No.2912 of 6th June, 1940,
I have the honour to submit the following narrative.
On Wednesday 29th May, at 1700, "Olvina" proceeded to
Dover in company with "Topaze". During the night she became
detached and reached Dover independently at 1045/30 May. The
Examination Vessel was hailed for instructions, and at 1230
orders were received to proceed to the Downs, where the
Examination Vessel would have our sailing orders. This ship,
which was engaged in towing a steamer off the Goodwins,
directed us to the Examination Tug at the North Goodwin Light
Vessel, where we anchored at 1545 to await instructions from
the shore, since the Tug had no orders for us. At 1810 orders
were received to proceed to Bray beaches, 6 miles east of
Dunkirk, to pick up troops.
At 2210 the anchor was dropped 1 mile to east of Dunkirk
when visibility was very low owing to smoke clouds. Orders
were then received from a destroyer to investigate a reported
enemy M.T.B. 2 miles to eastward. Anchor was weighed at 2221,
and we steamed to Bray beaches without encountering the M.T.B.
Pilotage was somewhat hazardous in the intense darkness, owing
to wrecks obstructing the channel, and at 2345 the anchor was
dropped as close inshore as possible.

Later that evening Captain Howson got in touch with Rear-Admiral Wake-
Walker, then in the Worcester, and obtained permission to embark the following
day in a motor boat off the beaches SO as to prevent a recurrence of this waste
of beaching craft².
In spite of the difficulties and shortcomings emphasised in the above reports
great progress was being made. In fact, beach evacuation reached its peak
on this day; 29,500 troops were lifted from the beaches (as against 24,300
from the harbour) ; and some 50 ships, including destroyers, minesweepers,
skoots, trawlers, drifters, personnel and special service vessels, were engaged
continuously in the arduous work.

Mascotte to tow the Basilisk, the enemy returned to the attack but made no
hits. The French trawler slipped the tow and moved off to a safer distance.
At noon bombers returned for a third time, diving to about 400 feet.
Smothered by hits and near misses the Basilisk shuddered and heeled to star-
board, righted herself momentarily, but sank in about 3 minutes, settling on
the bottom on an even keel in some 4 fathoms. As soon as she was abandoned
the Whitehall completed her destruction by gunfire and torpedoes.
The Jolie Mascotte picked up 6 officers and 71 ratings, the Whitehall 2 officers
and 52 ratings. Other survivors got away in the motor boat and a whaler.
Second air attack, 0906 : sinking of the Havant
Meanwhile the Havant, after transferring 500 troops from the damaged
Ivanhoe, proceeded down Dunkirk Channel. At 0906, at the western end of
the channel, she was hit by 2 bombs which entered the starboard side of the
engine room killing every one in it. A third bomb dropped 50 yards ahead and
exploded as the Havant passed over it. Out of control and listing to port, the
ship continued to steam ahead towards the sandbanks opposite Dunkirk. The
engine room and No. 2 boiler room were on fire, there was a heavy escape of
steam and all auxiliary machinery was out of action, resulting in a failure of
the electric supply. It was impossible to enter the engine room, but Chief
Stoker M. Gallon, in spite of the fire, let the steam out of the boilers and the
ship was brought up in 4 fathoms by the starboard anchor.
The Saltash and Grive came alongside and the Havant's troops were trans-
ferred during almost continuous bombing. The Saltash took the Havant in
tow, but further concussion from near misses increased considerably the des-
troyer's list to port, so the majority of her ship's company were transferred to
the skoot Aegir. A bomb fell between the Havant and the Saltash followed by
another close to the Havant's port quarter. By 1000 the list had increased and
the decks were almost awash. 'Abandon ship" was ordered, the tow was
slipped and the remainder of the ship's company were transferred to the Aegir.
At 1015 the Havant rolled over and sank. 1 officer and 7 men were killed,
25 wounded.
Third air attack, 1009. Prague damaged
The enemy air attacks had not been confined to ships off the beaches. At
1009 the personnel vessel Prague, which had embarked about 3000 French
troops from Dunkirk harbour, was attacked by dive-bombers between W and V
buoys and suffered severe damage astern from 3 near misses which put the
starboard engine out of action.
The majority of the troops were transferred, whilst the ship continued to go
ahead on the port engine, to the Scimitar, the minesweeper Halcyon and the
paddle minesweeper Queen of Thanet, the later taking on board no less than
1,500 and the Scimitar 376; and at 1331 the tug Lady Brassey took the Prague
in tow to the Downs, where the remaining troops were transferred to the trawlers
Olvina and Lady Philomena. The Prague had ended her service in Operation
' Dynamo", for to save her from sinking she was beached off Sandown Castle,
Deal, at 1730 that day. In three trips, she had taken out from Dunkirk over
6,000 men.
Sinking of the Foudroyant
Before the morning was out yet a fourth destroyer, the French Foudroyant,
was sunk by air attack. The ship had sailed from England at 0800. She

9. 800 troops were landed at Dover during the forenoon from
Drifters returning from Dunkirk. A/S Trawler "Kingston Andalusite"
reported what was considered a successful attack on a submarine off
"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "T" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "I" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler

In accordance with your Memo No. 2912 of
narrative. 6th June, 1940, I have the honour to submit the following
On Wednesday, 29th May, at 1700, "Olvina"
proceeded to Dover in company with "Topaze". During the
night she became detached and reached Dover independently
at 1045/30 May. The Examination Vessel was hailed for
instructions, and at 1230 orders were received to proceed
to the Downs, where the Examination Vessel would have our
sailing orders. This ship, which was engaged in towing
a steamer off the Goodwins, directed us to the Examination
Tug at the North Goodwin Light Vessel, where we anchored
at 1545 to await instructions from the shore, since the
Tug had no orders for us. At 1810 orders were received
to proceed to Bray beaches, 6 miles east of Dunkirk, to
pick up troops.
At 2210 the anchor was dropped 1 mile to
east of Dunkirk, when visibility was very low owing to
smoke clouds. Orders were then received from a destroyer
to investigate a reported enemy M.T.B. 2 miles to eastward.
Anchor was weighed at 2221, and we steamed to Bray beaches
without encountering the M.T.B. Pilotage was somewhat
hazardous in the intense darkness, owing to wrecks obstruct-
ing the channel, and at 2345 the anchor was dropped as
close inshore as possible.
The ship's boat was taken away soon after
midnight, and brought off two loads of troops totalling
32, including one stretcher case, which was put aboard a
destroyer. Owing to deterioration of conditions, no more
troops were embarked until daylight, when the boat was
pulled ashore on two more occasions.
At about 0500/31 May, "Sabre" was full of
troops and ready to proceed to England, so it was arranged
that "Olvina" should provide a crew for "Sabre"s" motorboat
and use it for embarking troops. Accordingly, after I'm
filling with petrol from "Icarus", the motorboat was manned
and proceeded to tow off ships' boats and Royal Engineer's
pontoon floats from the pier to vessels anchored off. The
pier consisted of motor lorries driven into the sea at low
water, having planks lashed to the roofs. Owing to a
northwesterly breeze, which freshened to force 3/4 at 1100,
only the eastern side of the pier could be used, and some
difficulty was experienced in handling the boats. Probably
about 300 to 350 troops were removed in this manner, of
which 240 were put aboard "Olvina".
No interference by enemy action was experienced
during the embarkation, although enemy aircraft were being

On proceeding to the office of Captain Auxiliary
Patrol, I was informed that "Olvina" should not have gone to
Dunkirk, but should have been on A/S patrol. Accordingly, at
0820/1 June, "Olvina" proceeded to a patrol station 17 miles
NNW of Dunkirk, which was reached at 1125. At 1500, 70
survivors from "Basilisk" came alongside in a French fishing
boat, and at 1917 we went alongside "Whitehall" in Dover
harbour and disembarked them.
"Olvina" was in harbour during 2nd and 3rd June,
and on 4th June escorted "Bideford" to Portsmouth without
incident.
