OPERATION DYNAMO.
ENCLOSURE NO. 16.

6th June, 1940.
OFFICER REPORTING: F.R. MARTINO, Lieutenant, R.N.V.R.
On the 30th May, 1940, H.M.S. PELLAG II, in
company with Trawlers F.Y. and B.K., left Dover at 1400
for Dunkirk. We took the long route and made the coast
about 0200 31st May. I was unable to find the beach and
returned to the trawlers.
2. We then proceeded to Dunkirk and arrived about
1000 on 31st May. We were bombed going in but no damage.
3. I left the trawlers off shore and proceeded in
to about 3 cables off beach. We were then attacked by two
enemy planes, who bombed us for about 20 minutes. I went
full speed and zig-zagged about and fired on them with our
rifles (our 3 pounder gun would not elevate high enough
to be of any use).
4.
I again closed the beach, lowered my only dinghy and
embarked five loads of men - about 30 men and 3 officers.
On leaving the beach I found F.Y. stuck on the mud and I
tried to tow her, in doing so burnt out the clutches on my
engines and broke the steering. Steered ship with engines
and makeshift rudder and closed H.M.S. WORCESTER about
1½ miles off shore.

I asked for a tow to Dover, but Commander Alliston
of H.M.S. WORCESTER ordered me to abandon ship. Transferred
all my men safely aboard destroyer and C.Bs.
6. WORCESTER took on more men off jetty and was bombed
and machine gunned, also after getting under weigh.
7. The following were my crew -

P. Eton was wounded in the knee aboard the destroyer,
and P.O. Elgar lost his memory. Both were sent to hospital

In accordance with Admiralty Letter N.L.6245/40 dated 1st August,
1940, be pleased to lay before Their Lordships the following report
resulting from an enquiry held into the loss of H.M. Armed Yacht PELLAG II
in Operation "Dynamo".
2. Temporary Lieutenant F.W.R. Martino, R.N.V.R. was interviewed on
3rd September, 1940.
3. When PELLAG II was approaching Dunkirk at about 1000 on 31st May,
1940, she went to the assistance of a trawler which was aground. In her
efforts to tow the trawler off, the clutch of Diesel Engine burnt out and
the wire cable of steering gear parted. Effort to tow was then abandoned.
4. The hand tiller was rigged but could not be efficiently operated
on account of the depth charge davit which prevented it passing the
midship position. The ship could only proceed very slowly and the
Commanding Officer asked WORCESTER to take her in tow.
5. WORCESTER was leaving Dunkirk heavily loaded with troops and as
she was being subjected to bombing attack and PELLAG II's defective
steering made towing very difficult, WORCESTER took the Commanding Officer
and men on board and cast PELLAG II off. An effort to sink the yacht was
unsuccessful on account of aerial bombardment.
6. PELLAG II was, at 0600 on the 2nd June, found adrift by a party
of Royal Engineers which, under Major M.C.A. Henniker, R.E., was making
its escape from the French Coast in rowing boats. They boarded the yacht
and managed to get the engines running. PELLAG II was making slow progress
when at 0515 on 2nd June H.M.S. LOCUST closed and examined her. As the
engines and steering gear were found to be defective, officers and other
ranks were taken on board LOCUST and PELLAG II was taken in tow. Shortly
afterwards, the tow parted. Two further attempts were made to tow her
but as enemy aircraft were in the vicinity the Commanding Officer of
LOCUST decided to abandon her. An attempt to sink her by gun-fire was
not successful, and the Commanding Officer of the LOCUST, states, in a
written report he has sent to me;-"with the prevailing set of wind and
"tide it is Klams that she may have subsequently fallen into the hands of"
"the enemy."

The evacuation figures for the day
Little ships added their quotas to those of the big ships, though not without
casualties they suffered heavy losses from collision or other misadventure,
although in the circumstances it was not always possible to obtain details
(See App. B.I.)
On this day there were lifted from the beaches and from Dunkirk harbour :
by motor boats and the like 2334 persons, by hopper barges 1470, by tugs 736,
by yachts 1,831, by skoots 3,170, of which almost all were from the beaches,
by special service vessels 1,250, by drifters 2,968, and by trawlers 1,876 prac-

foreign ships were embarked in Dunkirk harbour, none coming from the beaches.
Though losses of ships had been highest this day the total of troops lifted was
the second highest of the operation, no less than 64,429 being landed in England.
Of these, 47,081 had been embarked in Dunkirk harbour and 17,348 from the
beaches.

OPERATION DYNAMO.
ENCLOSURE NO. 16.
SHIP: H.M.S.PELLAG II. Armed Motor
Yacht.
6th June, 1940.
OFFICER REPORTING: F.R. MARTINO, Lieutenant, R.N.V.R.
On the 30th May, 1940, H.M.S. PELLAG II, in
company with Trawlers F.Y. and B.K., left Dover at 1400
for Dunkirk. We took the long route and made the coast
about 0200 31st May. I was unable to find the beach and
returned to the trawlers.
2. We then proceeded to Dunkirk and arrived about
1000 on 31st May. We were bombed going in but no damage.
3. I left the trawlers off shore and proceeded in
to about 3 cables off beach. We were then attacked by two
enemy planes, who bombed us for about 20 minutes. I went
full speed and zig-zagged about and fired on them with our
rifles (our 3 pounder gun would not elevate high enough
to be of any use).

I again closed the beach, lowered my only dinghy and
embarked five loads of men - about 30 men and 3 officers.
On leaving the beach I found F.Y. stuck on the mud and I
tried to tow her, in doing so burnt out the clutches on my
engines and broke the steering. Steered ship with engines
and makeshift rudder and closed H.M.S. WORCESTER about
1½ miles off shore.

I asked for a tow to Dover, but Commander Alliston
of H.M.S. WORCESTER ordered me to abandon ship. Transferred
all my men safely aboard destroyer and C.Bs.
6. WORCESTER took on more men off jetty and was bombed
and machine gunned, also after getting under weigh.

P. Eton was wounded in the knee aboard the destroyer,
and P.O. Elgar lost his memory. Both were sent to hospital
on arrival in Dover. I cannot speak too highly of these
men under fire.
