Left Dover for Braye-Dunes in company
with H.M.S. Dolphin's power boat.

a.m.
Arrived off Bray. Went inshore to tow
small boats to the ships. A heavily
laden boat capsized. Most of the men
(in full equipment) sank like stones.
Picked up one man. The A/A motor
boat's screws fouled and she was
driven aground.
S/Lt. Matthew went ashore, refloated
an abandoned cabin-cruiser, and left
her to carry on in charge of the A/A
motor boat's crew.
It was now found that the A/A motor
boat "was of no further use".
S/Lt. Matthew got a ship's life boat and
made several trips. When she became
holed, he obtained another.
By this time, the cabin cruiser's
engine was giving trouble, so the crew
rejoined S/Lt. Matthew in the life
boat and continued ferrying.

The life boat was now much damaged and
the crew were exahusted with their
efforts. They all transferred to

Showed great initiative and leadership during
the operation. His general bearing, conduct and
ability, coolness and devotion to duty under fire
whilst towing large numbers of boats from the beach
was an example to all.
Recommended for decoration.
Stoker Ernest Baker, T.124.
Showed great zeal and initiative apart from his
ordinary work in volunteering for boatwork in which
he was thereafter employed. Further, he took charge
of the loaned motor-boat.
Recommended for mention.
Signalman Ernest Savidge, R.N.V.R.
Did very valuable work as a volunteer in boat's
crew. Although crushed and badly bruised between
two boats he continued his work with a cheerfulness
and total disregard for his own comfort.

Commanding Officer of H.M.S. "Medway Queen". This officer
took his vessel over to the French Coast 7 times between May 27th
and June 3rd.He was entirely responsible for the navigation and handling
of the vessel under heavy gunfire, bombing, and congested shipping in
Dunkirk and on the beaches.
His chserful disposition was most effective in keeping
his crew going,as they had practically no rest during this period,
and were worn out.
I personally went one trip to Dunkirk with Lieut.Cook,
and had an opportunity of seeing his magnificent work bringing off
troops in this congested harbour.
He is very strongly recommended for a decoration.

Commending Officer H.M.S. "Princess Elizabeth".
This officer handled his ship during evacuation operations
in a most able manner. Vessel was heavily bombed at Bray,and his

CHAP. VI
Calcutta contacts Lord Gort
On receipt of this signal at 0345 the Calcutta, which had already been embark-
ing troops from La Panne beach, sent her boats in again, in charge of Mr. F.J.
March, Gunner. Mr. March made personal contact with Lord Gort about
8 miles inland, and placed the Calcutta at his disposal for his or his staff's evacua-
tion. Lord Gort, however, courteously refused to be evacuated at this
stage¹.
La Panne beach cleared of troops
Meanwhile the Calcutta was proceeding with the embarkation, having en-
listed the assistance of the minesweepers Sutton and Salamander, the tug Java,
five drifters2, and three motor launches³. By 1357 the Calcutta had embarked
1200 troops, with whom she proceeded to Sheerness.
In addition to the ships assisting the Calcutta, 7 minesweepers4, 4 skoots5,
and 5 destroyers⁶ also embarked troops from La Panne beach. Of the
destroyers, the Greyhound was bombed and severely damaged (see p.42).
The minesweepers embarked, in all, 3415 troops, the skoots 1137 and the des-
troyers 2100. The tramp Yewdale and the motor vessels Beal and Bullfinch
between them brought off 1,854. The assault landing craft A.L.C.15 ferried
about 750 troops from the beaches to off-lying ships, and finally transported
25 to Dover ; the A.L.C.5 also ferried troops throughout the day.
The paddle-minesweeper Oriole had beached herself at La Panne at about
0600, thus permitting about 2,500 troops to pass over her decks to be embarked
by other ships before she refloated at about 1800. In this connection, Sub-
Lieut. Croswell, who had been landed at La Panne at about 0600 with a small
beach party in the Harvester's motor skiff, says : " On the beach we found
14 boats which we launched. A line ferry was established from a paddle-
steamer [the Oriole] which was aground close inshore, and this steamer served
as a pier alongside which other boats were able to come.
Throughout
the
day embarkation continued."
Later in his report, Sub-Lieut. Croswell says " About 1400
bombing
commenced - there were no casualties though 8 heavy bombs fell within 100
yards of the place of embarkation. A supply ship [the danlayer Nautilus]
to the right of the beach was fired and destroyed by a near miss, and a destroyer
[the Greyhound] was hit by an incendiary bomb [in fact she was severely
damaged by a near miss] but continued in action. I joined up with the Army
Staff controlling evacuation - there were no other naval officers at La Panne.⁷
About 2300
I requested that piers should be built but was told nothing
could be done that night.
Lord Gort arrived on the beach on Thursday
morning [30th May] and asked what could be done to assist. I again sug-
gested erection of piers, and under Colonel Porter's direction this was begun,
the pier at La Panne being ready and in use by 1400".

CHAP. IX
The second series of attacks, which began at about 0906 and caused the loss
of the Havant, coincided with the arrival of the third main R.A.F. patrol of the
day. Coastal Command patrols were also over the ships, and at about 1015
one drove off a He. 111 which was about to attack two destroyers.
The third, a particularly heavy and prolonged enemy air attack, took place
from about 1009 to 1120, at which latter time a patrol of 28 Hurricanes appeared
and within ten minutes was engaged with an enemy force of 50 or 60 M. 109s
and 110s. The presence of enemy bombers was also reported, but they were
not engaged. They were responsible for sinking the French destroyer
Foudroyant, the minesweeper Brighton Queen, personnel vessel Scotia, and
damaging a second personnel vessel the Prague. A fourth air attack developed,
at about 1230, during the Hurricanes' patrol. In this raid the corvette King-
fisher received damage from a near miss which rendered her unseaworthy in
heavy weather, and the gunboat Mosquito was sunk.
There was a lull after this and the next air attacks fortunately occurred at
a time when the fifth R.A.F. patrol was operating, at 1500 and 1530, and a
Coastal Command patrol was also on the spot; and no ship was damaged.
Renewed attacks occurred at 1600-1630 in the very short interval before the
sixth R.A.F. patrol came up, and it was in this raid that the paddle minesweeper
Westward-Ho, sailing from Dunkirk with 900 French troops, and the destroyer
Worcester were damaged, over 100 bombs being dropped near the latter ship
When this was over, visibility had so far declined that at 1750 the paddle
minesweeper Princess Elizabeth, trying to approach Bray beach, ran into
fog and was compelled to return to Dover. The seventh R.A.F. patrol was
troubled by poor visibility, and the eighth and last encountered no enemy
at all. No bombing attacks were reported after 1840.
Five destroyers, a gunboat, two minesweepers, two personnel vessels, and
two tugs were sunk or put out of action by the German bombers on this 1st
June.
The weight of the enemy attacks may be gauged from the fact that over
1000 German bombing sorties were reported over the Dunkirk area during the
day. Forty-three enemy aircraft were destroyed.
The first heavy air attack, 0730. Keith, Skipjack and St. Abbs sunk
The Keith and Salamander moved westward from the deserted eastern
beaches. At 0737, off Bray, a large number of enemy bombers accompanied
by fighters was seen approaching, and a dive-bombing attack was made on the
Keith. The latter's manoeuvrability was restricted by shoals, magnetic mines
and wrecks, but she was not hit. But a delay action bomb from a dive bomber
exploded just astern of the ship and caused the steering wheel on the bridge
to jam. Tiller flat steering was connected up and the ship was conned by
telephone from the bridge. By this time all the Keith's 3-inch ammunition
had been expended, and the only defence which the ship could put up was the
passive one of continuing to turn in small circles at high speed in the restricted
waters.
At about 0800 numerous dive-bombing attacks took place, and the Keith was
hit or near missed on the starboard side. A large hole was blown in the side at
the forward end of the starboard engine room below the water line, and the bulk-
head between the engine room and the after boiler room was ruptured, flooding
both spaces and killing Lieut. (E) W. H. Kenward, R.N. and several men. The
boiler room shortly afterwards caught fire, possibly as the result of a further

During the afternoon of the 3rd the French authorities transmitted the figure
of French troops still remaining in Dunkirk. This was about 30,000, a pro-
portion of whom belonged to other than combatant units. The total capacity
of the lifting force, if used to the full, was 30,000, but this was about 5,000 more
than the facilities within the port would permit of being embarked in 4 hours,
even if the French troops moved with the greatest rapidity at all points of
embarkation. On previous occasions there had been some instances of difficulty
