Half a dozen Thames river launches resembling nothing so much
as the upper decks of elongated motor-buses with their rows
of slatted seats, but given a tang of the waterside by rows of
white-painted lifebuoys slung around the upper rails.
The very names of these latter craft are redolent of the
quiet of Richmond, Teddington and Hampton Court; "Skylark",
"Elizabeth" and "Queen Boadicea". A strange flotilla indeed
to be taking an active part in what has been described as "the
greatest naval epic in history".
The crews and their officers too were as miscellaneous an
assembly as the craft they manned. First arrived a trickle
of R.N.V.R. Sub-Lieutenants direct from training school, taken
from their class-rooms often in the midst of a lecture on the
"practical pilotage" they were soon to put to such good account.
Many of these were entering a naval dock-yard for the first
time in their lives, yet they clambered over the little ships,
bawled for their requirements in food, fuel and water and set
to work to prepare for the task in hand, as if to the manner
born.
Next came another thin trickle - this time junior Royal
Navy officers who but a short time before were midshipmen on
war vessels of various types; little more than schoolboys, yet
each possessed of that indescribable sangfroid and cheerful
discipline which is the hall-mark of the British naval officer
whatever his age or rank.
Lastly - and only a matter of minutes before the time of
departure - came the crews; Royal Fleet Reserve men this first
batch - tough, stout-hearted and disciplined. No time to pick
or choose; stoker ratings first, to man the little engines -
one man to each boat; then the seamen - "Swarm over those
boats men and wherever you find an officer aboard ask him if he
needs a crew! Three men to the larger boats and two each to
the smaller".

Sub Lieut. W.E. Mercer, R.N.V.R. of "Strathelliot" -
saw the"Mary Rose" and "Skylark" sink in mid ocean,
crew all brought back. Following were seen abandoned
as Dunkirk :- "Malden" "Annie IV" and "Empress".
The former was used as a pier.

"Scene Shifter" was swamped by French troops on
Wed. June 29th. "Triton" was cast off while in
tow with foul screw.

Lieut. W.B. Whitworth, R.N. did 6 trips in "Aeger".

Mr. R. Brown - went over in "Madame Sansgene" on
night of Monday June 3rd. Elgar H. Jefferey and his
brother were also in the boat. Towed over by "Tanjar"
(Tug) with another Motor boat. On way back boats
fouled a rope, which had been veered by the "Tanjar"
to stutch it as it was new, and the boats had to be
abandoned. The "Madame Sansgene" claimed to have
shot down a bomber.

P.O. E. Wells, R.N.R. - went over in "Nanette II",
who had a Lieut. R.N.V.R. in charge. They went to
Ostende an then to Dunkirk and brought back mostly
French troops, some of whom had been in the water
for 12 hours. "Nanette" was finally returned to

Wed, May 29th for Ramsgate. Sailed from Ramsgate at at
(Lieut. Mortimer R.N.R. 1/c). Left Sheerness on
2245 Thursday night and arrived at Dunkirk
1100 on Friday. The only soldiers on the beaches vessels
there, They left Dunkirk about 1830 towing
on 45 of them, were ferried off in the YC 71

The (Trades Union ?) crew of the passenger launch 'Queen Boadicea'
took advantage of this offer (apparently being more concerned with
their 'dues' than with their duty).
NOTE:
The remaining boats which had left Sheerness with us, and had
dropped out during the night, arrived at intervals during the
morning; except one which had been sunk in collision; her crew,
however, had been picked up and were redistributed.
0645 hrs. Fine clear morning, no wind. Slipped and proceeded

in company with other boats, again following Leader as No. Two.
Led Convoy for a short time, while Leader was investigating a
straggler with carburettor trouble.

Nothing else of note, so we were able to get a little sleep on
turns, and dry clothing in the sun.
0900 hrs. Found old hacksaw blade in a locker and so were able
to open tin of beef, and make sandwiches.

DUNKIRK.
29 May. 1130 hrs. Realised that cloud-bank observed ahead was actually
smoke from burning town.
1200 hrs. Fairly close in, turned East, parallel with Coast
line.
1230 hrs. Approaching Dunkirk. Two enemy aircraft believed to
be J.U.87's dived on convoy and machine gunned it. No casualties
or important damage noticed, but 'Advance' signal mast carried away.
(Apparently by under-carriage of second machine).
NOTE:
A good deal of wreckage about, also sunken ships and crashed
aeroplanes. A lot of firing going on. Passed a moored hulk, flying
French flag and mounting several AA-guns, firing a good deal at no
very apparent target.

given sailing directions and told to join a convoy
which had left an hour previously with "Queen Boadicea"
and "Queen of the Thames". Before leaving, the Officer
in charge kindly agreed to send telegrams to our respec-
tive wives that we would not be home for a day or two.
We set off at full speed and enquired of the Nore Light-
ship if they had seen the convoy, but without success, so
Horse Gore and South Channels
we proceeded via the Cant. Four Fathoms/ and passed a convoy
of about six vessels, but they were bound for Ramsgate.
We arrived off Margate without having seen our convoy
and as our compass has not been adjusted and could not
be relied upon, we reported at Margate to Commander
Stanslet, the Naval Officer in charge, who instructed us
to proceed to Ramsgate. About 6 p.m. we arrived at
Ramsgate and reported to the Officer in charge, and were
supplied with steel helmets and life belts, and were
instructed to join a convoy leaving Ramsgate the follow-
ing day; having no facilities for sleeping on board,
we stayed the night at an Hotel adjoining the harbour.
On Thursday the 30th May, before we left Ramsgate a
number of Naval Ratings whose boats had broken down were
endeavouring to obtain berths as additional crews on
boats which were leaving for Dunkirk, so we consented
to take with us a man called McPherson who, I understood,
had once been in the Naval Air Force and was a very use-
ful man. At 6.45 p.m. on the same day we joined a
convoy of ten craft headed by "Bonny Heather" all towing
ship's boats, and proceeded on a coursefor Dunkirk.
At 8 p.m. the engine started to falter, the cause
obviously being a failure of the petrol supply. I stopped
the engine and disconnected the petrol pipes and endeavoured
to clear the obstruction, and had the engine going again
in about 25 minutes.

Dunkirk picked up three seamen survivors from' Janis"? II"
R.N.V.R.? and a stoker had been killed outright
Pier. The latter's Captain Sub Lieut. off Bell
by a bomb on Friday may 31. The survivors were
landed at Ramsgate.

Mr. C.V. Cogger - signed in "Seine" at Rochester.
Left her on Wednesday full of water for the beaches
( Lieut. Cdr Filluel in command). Brought hack
350 British and French troops to Ramsgate. Sailed
again for Dunkirk and brought back 300 troops.

Sub Lieut. W.E. Mercer, R.N.V.R. of "Strathelliot" -
saw the Mary Rose" and "Skylark" sink in mid ocean,
crew all brought back. Following were seen abandoned
as Dunkirk :- "Malden" "Annie IV" and "Empress".
The former was used as a pier.

"Scene Shifter" was swamped by French troops on
Wed. June 29th. "Triton" was cast off while in
tow with foul screw.

Lieut. W.B. Whitworth, R.N. did 6 trips in "Aeger".

Mr. R. Brown - went over in "Madame Sansgene" on
night of Monday June 3rd. Elgar H. Jefferey and his
brother were also in the boat. Towed over by "Tanjar"
(Tug) with another Motor boat. On way back boats
fouled a rope, which had been veered by the "Tanjar"
to stutch it as it was new, and the boats had to be
abandoned. The "Madame Sansgene" claimed to have
shot down a bomber.

P.O. E. Wells, R.N.R. - went over in "Nanette II",
who had a Lieut. R.N.V.R. in charge. They went to
Ostende an then to Dunkirk and brought back mostly
French troops, some of whom had been in the water
for 12 hours. "Nanette" was finally returned to

Coxn. George Senior, O.N. 239990 - In YC 73
(Lieut. Mortimer R.N.R. 1/c). Left Sheerness on
Wed, May 29th for Ramsgate. Sailed from Ramsgate at
2245 on Thursday night and arrived at Dunkirk at
1100 on Friday. The only soldiers on the beaches
there, 45 of them, were ferried off in the vessels
skiff. They left Dunkirk about 1830 towing YC 71
and a Thornycroft motor boat. The YC 72 broke down
herself about midnight and anchored. H wever, the
Thornycroft boat managed to start up again and must
have informed Ramsgate for a tug came out about 0700
and towed YO 78 and YC 71 back to Ramsgate.
