Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following narrative of
events of H.M.S. Caribia in accordance with N.G.O. 448.
The draft left Chatham at 0800 on the 26th May and took
over the ship from the Dutch crew at Tilbury at 1500. In the
afternoon victualling stores were embarked and the ship was
then "wiped". This was satisfactorily completed at 0315/27.
The ship was then ordered to proceed to Southend for
compass adjustment and to Sheerness for storing and fuelling.
Southend was reached at 0630 and during the forenoon the ship
was swung for compass adjustment. On arrival at Sheerness
at 1300 the ship moored and fuel and water were taken in and
later naval stores and special stores embarked.
The ship was then ordered to proceed to Southend for orders.
At 0800/28 orders were received to proceed to Marte les Bains.
On approaching Dunkirk at 2230 a drifter with 120 troops on
board was closed. These troops were embarked and the drifter
returned to the harbour for more. As these had not arrived
after one hour the ship entered the harbour and secured
alongside the eastern pier. The ship was then filled with a
total of about 320 troops and at 0400 slipped and proceeded.
At 1300/29 the North Goodwin examination vessel was hailed
and orders were received to proceed to Margate. The troops
were disembarked at Margate Pier at 1600 and provisions and
stores were embarked. Orders were then received to proceed
to the beaches east of Dunkirk, with "Zeus" in company as the
latter's compass was unreliable. The ships slipped and
proceeded at 1930/29.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the report of proceedings of the
employed on Operation "Dynamo".
"M" Drifters attached to Yarmouth Base (H.M.S. "Watchful") whilst
30.5.40. 2345.
Flotilla sailed Yarmouth for Ramsgate,
31.5.40. 1500.
Arrived Ramsgate and received orders to proceed to
Dunkirk forthwith to assist in evacuation of troops.
31.5.40. 1515.
Flotilla sailed for Dunkirk.
1900.
On approaching Dunkirk Roads, Flotilla vas subjected to
intense bombing attack by about sixty onemy bombers.
Consequently, I gave the order to "scatter".
Drifter "Lord Hood" was severaly damaged by & "near riss*,
Three casualties, one seaman being killed outright, and two
wounded. I took "Feasible" alongside "Lord Hood* and
removed the C.Bs, the Ship's Company having been picked up by
"Alcmaria".
After ascertaining that nothing further could
be done and nobody left on board, I ordered flotilla to take up
formation again and proceeded into Dunicirk. bombers
had in the meantime been driven off by British Pighters Sub
ships coming under heavy gunfire from shore batteries.
2000.
Secured alongside North Pier, Dunkirk with twelve ships
and proceeded to embark troops.
2030.
Orders were received from a Commander R.N. ashore to
discontinue embarkation and proceed out of harbour to piok up
troops from North Beaches.

with troops, were ordered back to Ramagate,
The remaining
ships followed me out of harbour to the Beaches,
From then
onwards, ships worked independently, returning to Ramagate then
full and back to Beaches for more, This continued throughout
the night and the bllowing day and night of lat/2nd June when all
drifters were ordered by the Naval Officer in Charge, Ramagate to
leave Dunkirk by 0300, 2nd June, empty or full. Plotilla
anchored in Ramsgate Roads awaiting further instructions.

"Feasible" in tow, under the command of Sub. Ideutenant 5. N. Mann,
R.N.V.R., were ordered to proceed to Yarmouth.

CHAP. VIII
in the Bray and Malo sectors were being thinned out by movements westward
towards Dunkirk iteslf. This change of plan involved concentrating the special
tows and the minesweepers to which they were to transfer the troops, into the
stretch opposite the beach between Zuydcoote Sanatorium and one mile east
of La Panne¹, and also advancing the commencement of the operation by one
hour².
A risk was involved in this change of plan as the boat tows were not in com-
munication with the Vice-Admiral, and it would therefore be necessary for
minesweepers to see that the escorting M.A./S.B.'s shepherded the tows to the
new positions It had been explained to the Naval officers in each tow that
the minesweepers would be anchored so as to serve as guiding marks³.
" It was always impossible for me to do more than deal with the situation of
the moment", says Rear-Admiral Wake-Walker. "I did not know what ships
were coming or when-except for the pre-arranged plan of the sloops. Nor
was it possible for Dover to give me much information. Ships got back there,
unloaded, and were off again, the stream was constant but irregular and it was
not possible to see any way ahead. My policy was always to keep only sufficient
ships off the beaches and send all the others into Dunkirk, but the situation
changed continually."4
Small craft arrive in hundreds
It was in such circumstances that, at about 1900, Rear-Admiral Wake-
Walker had proceeded to Dunkirk in the Keith to see how the boat situation
was getting on. There he saw for the first time that strange procession of
craft of all kinds the story of which was to become famous-tugs, towing
dinghies, life-boats and all manner of pulling boats5-small motor yachts,
motor launches, drifters, Dutch skoots, Thames barges, fishing boats, pleasure
steamers⁶. This was indeed the first time that the small craft had come over
in hundreds⁷. Since noon Lt. Cdr. C. J. Wynne-Edwards, R.N. (of R.-A.
Dunkirk's staff), embarked in M.T.B.68, had been directing the tows to the
various beaches.

Swift Wing and Taransay. The drifters Fair Breeze and Ocean Breeze were again over,
the former towing a motor life-boat and 3 life-boats.

my boat hook, but as he was dead and a German at that, I
pushed him off and got on my way.
A few minutes later I saw a French Destroy-
er doing about twenty-five to thirty knots, making her way
into Dunkirk. I took my eyes off her for a minute or two
and then glanced back, but there was nothing there. She
must have had a direct hit from a bomb and sunk within a
few minutes. I made my course over to where she had gone
and picked up her survivors, which altogether numbered
only about twenty. Those I picked up I put on board a
French tug which happened to be in the vicinity, and once
more carried on into Dunkirk.
Eventually I arrived off the beach where
the swarms of soldiers were gathered, and at the same time
one of our big ships came and anchored close inshore.
Three of our little convoy of eight had arrived. The first
immediately filled with soldiers and carried on back to
England. The second went aground. My first job was to
ferry soldiers from the beach to the big ship, and I made
a number of trips. Then I tried to tow the boat that had
run aground off the beach but the young seaman with me got
the tow rope around my propellors, the result being that
I had to give the job up and that my own ship ran aground.
All around there was ceaseless activity and, jumping over
the side, I gave a hand carrying the wounded soldiers to
the big ship's skiff which had been launched.
When he knew what had happened the Captain
of this ship ordered me to go on board his ship with my
crew and we swan out to her, but the swift running tide
had not finished with us yet. Soon after we had clambered
aboard the big ship, she too, ran aground. It must have
been about two or three belook in the afternoon then,

During the time we were anchored in this place we could, during the
day, hear the roar and fury of the guns and mines on the French coast, the
concussion of which was shaking the "LOCHGARRY" at her anchorage twenty-one
miles away, and at night the same pounding went on with the addition of
immense fires shooting up in the sky - "Calais" on fire? I took bearings by
compass to verify this; it came out to a degree and next morning we heard the

news. At night the dropping of magnetic mines round about was a common
occurrence, and the rat-tat-tat of the Spitfires chasing the enemy away, until
at last nobody was going to bother getting out of his bed to see them. But
if you did get up you were sure to find you were not the only one, although
they had faithfully promised to stick to their bunks. They would be in their
stocking soles, keeking out in some corner. It would be like a great display
adw dom
of fireworks, and one would wonder how many tons of lead were active in the
sky after the minelayer, or whether he would manage to get clear.
On May 28th at 4.30 a.m. orders were received to proceed to Dover for
one
fuel and water at 6 a.m., and at 7.5 p.m. same day we loaded provisions and
made various preparations for going to Dunkirk. At 8.56 p.m. we cast off from
one
Admiralty Pier bound for Dunkirk by a certain route. The night was dark and
hazy, and when we nearly bumped up against the North Goodwin Light vessel,
which was not lit, and after a bit of shouting to the light vessel, I dropped
anchor and we were at stand-easy till 3 a.m. Having no light of any kind we
had to keep a very good lookout. We felt a mighty wash rocking the ship fore
and aft, and right close beside us five destroyers passed at full speed, without
apparently taking the slightest notice. Shortly after another large ship
was bearing down on us, and passed quite close, and after heaving up anchor we
could still see her hull faintly in the gloom. We made up on her and afterwards
learned this was the "CLAN MACALISTER" which I guessed to be going the same way
as ourselves, as by now Dunkirk was the only place on the coast where she could
be going.
At 6.48 a.m. on the 29th May we were at the West Hinder Buoy. Behind us,
tearing along at top speed, was what well may have been termed the "Channel
Fleet". the swift steamers that had left Dover in the early morning, among
them being the "KING GEORGE V". Each as they passed the "LOCHGARRY" gave us
a hearty wave of hands and bonnets. All of them soon passed; on our port
bow was a British Destroyer, and one which we recognised as the one funnel
Polish Destroyer. They were going round in a circle which was gradually
getting smaller, both of them, I believe, taking cross bearing on a submarine.
When the circle got to the smallest possible round they each dropped several
depth charges about the same spot. We were watching for wreckage, but did not
successfully. see any. This would be the smallest depth at which a submarine could operate
A while later the Mate said he saw what appeared to be a spent torpedo
on the surface, but I did not see it. But if there was a submarine in that circle
he certainly is there yet! Now we were in the channel from which the enclosed
photo was taken (bottom picture), and the Mate and I argued as to whether it
was whin bushes or men that covered the sand dunes. On looking through the
binoculars we found that what appeared to be whin bushes were really armies of
the B.E.F. It was hardly credible, but true, the beach was strewn with wrecks
of ships at all angles, and motor lorries which were hardly visible, being
camouflaged, were dashing backwards and forwards.
We steamed along the channel which was some ten miles to Dunkirk Breakwater.
The Breakwater was fully occupied when we arrived there - two and three steamers
abreast. They were the steamers that had passed on the way in, and as many
destroyers, and who would be at the outer end of the Breakwater but the
S.S. "KILLARNEY" our sparring partner. This was a great surprise. How did
she get there? We left her in Dover, and they certainly did not pass us on the
way. But the secret was that the "KILLARNEY" was not degaussed and for that
reason they came by a different route from us! She was loaded with troops to
full capacity and had a very heavy list to starboard, away from the Breakwater,
and it was apparent that there was something wrong. Her belting had caught on
the Breakwater with the falling tide; eventually the belting gave way and she
was free to go, and backed out of the Harbour, closed up to us and waved, then
full away the way she had come good luck to them.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following narrative of
events of H.M.S. Caribia in accordance with N.G.O. 448.
The draft left Chatham at 0800 on the 26th May and took
over the ship from the Dutch crew at Tilbury at 1500. In the
afternoon victualling stores were embarked and the ship was
then "wiped". This was satisfactorily completed at 0315/27.
The ship was then ordered to proceed to Southend for
compass adjustment and to Sheerness for storing and fuelling.
Southend was reached at 0630 and during the forenoon the ship
was swung for compass adjustment. On arrival at Sheerness
at 1300 the ship moored and fuel and water were taken in and
later naval stores and special stores embarked.
The ship was then ordered to proceed to Southend for orders.
At 0800/28 orders were received to proceed to Marte les Bains.
On approaching Dunkirk at 2230 a drifter with 120 troops on
board was closed. These troops were embarked and the drifter
returned to the harbour for more. As these had not arrived
after one hour the ship entered the harbour and secured
alongside the eastern pier. The ship was then filled with a
total of about 320 troops and at 0400 slipped and proceeded.
At 1300/29 the North Goodwin examination vessel was hailed
and orders were received to proceed to Margate. The troops
were disembarked at Margate Pier at 1600 and provisions and
stores were embarked. Orders were then received to proceed
to the beaches east of Dunkirk, with "Zeus" in company as the
latter's compass was unreliable. The ships slipped and
proceeded at 1930/29.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the report of proceedings of the
employed on Operation "Dynamo".
"M" Drifters attached to Yarmouth Base (H.M.S. "Watchful") whilst
30.5.40.
2345.
Flotilla sailed Yarmouth for Ramsgate,
31.5.40. 1500.
Arrived Ramsgate and received orders to proceed to
Dunkirk forthwith to assist in evacuation of troops.
31.5.40. 1515.
Flotilla sailed for Dunkirk.
1900.
On approaching Dunkirk Roads, Flotilla vas subjected to
intense bombing attack by about sixty enemy bombors.
Consequently, I gave the order to "scatter".
Drifter "Lord Hood" was severaly damaged by & "near riss",
Three casualties, one seaman being killed outright, and two
wounded. I took "Feasible" alongside "Lord Hood* and
removed the C.Bs, the Ship's Company having been picked up by
"Alcmaria".
After ascertaining that nothing further could
be done and nobody left on board, I ordered flotilla to take up
formation again and proceeded into Dunicirk. Themy bombers
had in the meantime been driven off by British Pighters Sub
ships coming under heavy gunfire from shore batteries.
2000.
Secured alongside North Pier, Dunkirk with twelve ships
and proceeded to embark troops.
2030.
Orders were received from a Commander R.N. ashore to
discontinue embarkation and proceed out of harbour to piok up
troops from North Beaches.
Five ships, being already filled
with troops, were ordered back to Ramagate,

ships followed me out of harbour to the Beaches,
From then
onwards, ships worked independently, returning to Ramagate then
full and back to Beaches for more, This continued throughout
the night and the bllowing day and night of lat/2nd June when all
drifters were ordered by the Naval Officer in Charge, Ramagate to
leave Dunkirk by 0300, 2nd June, empty or full. Plotilla
anchored in Ramsgate Roads awaiting further instructions,

"Feasible" in tow, under the command of Sub. Ideutenant 5. 1. Mann,
R.N.V.R., were ordered to proceed to Yarmouth. They arrived
Yarmouth, 5th June.
