2 records

2 potential matching records have been identified.

These records may contain vessel particulars, reported movements, participation assessments, named personnel and source references. A match does not by itself prove that the vessel participated in Operation Dynamo.

“Potential match” means a candidate returned by one or more indexing rules; it is not necessarily an exact identity match. Depending on the source, matching may use a normalised vessel name, a partial text or OCR hit, an alias, or related metadata. Roman-numeral suffixes such as I, II, III, IV and V may be absent, misread or separated from the base name, so records for similarly named vessels can be grouped incorrectly. Multi-word names can also produce candidates where only one significant word matches. Confirm the full name, numeral, vessel type, dimensions, builder, ownership, dates and source context before treating two records as the same vessel.

We are compiling and checking transcriptions, metadata, vessel-name matches, source references and reuse permissions before publishing further detail. This work helps prevent incomplete OCR, historic spelling variations or unverified associations from being presented as established fact.

Account registrations and access to these developing records are temporarily unavailable. Existing account holders may log in, and everyone can join the newsletter for publication updates.

To present a comprehensive view of the whole of the naval
operations at Dunkirk between May 27th and June 5th is a task
for the historian. No man who took an active part can hope
to describe anything beyond the activities of his own particular
unit or section, and only with the passing of time will the
expert be able to piece together the various reports of all who
took part.

On the morning of 27th.May I proceeded from Chatham to Portsmouth

mpany of "JAVA" which had broken down and was then undergoing repair,
1 I was instructed to proceed to Southampton and take command of the

Repair work proceeded as arranged in accordance with F.O.1/c.
uthampton's instructions and main engine trials were held during the
renoon of 29th. May; these appeared to be satisfactory.
ring the afternoon of the same day I received instructions to proceed
Dover at the earliest possible moment, the urgency of these instructions
king it impossible to carry out the full tests of auxiliary machinery
originally planned with a further 24 hours at my disposal.
I left Inner Dock, Southampton at approx.1840/29th.and,after
justment of compasses and fuelling at Hamble Jetty, finally sailed for
ver at 0400/30th. arriving off that port at 1730 on the same day.
On passage the following defects had appeared:-
Driving belt from main engines to auxiliary machinery broken.
Auxiliary diesel refused to start.
Leaks from air bottles had resulted in starting air supply being
reduced to only sufficient air for one certain restart.
Mooring and windlass diesel refused to statt.
Ballast pump out of order.
On arrival off Dover a report was made through the Examination
essel to the effect that engineroom repairs were required and I was later

approx. 2230/30th.
Repair work was started the following day but at 2000 was stopped

Dynams 89.
Blu/o/197
R.N. Barracks,
134
Portsmouth.
6th June 1940.
Vice Admiral Dover,
hr Commodine. R.N.B.
TINE?
Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following report
on the operation carried out by H.M.S. Tiny under my command. The
ship was commissioned on Monday May 27th at Southampton and loaded
with 350 tons of mixed Army ammunition consisting of mostly cased
and 2000 rounds of 6" and an amount of 4.5 howitzer, which the
Authorities at Southampton loaded on the top.
On arriving
285
at Dover I was instructed to proceed to La Panne, dumping overboard
the 6" shell and cordite and 4.5 shell on the way over. The
majority of this I managed to do.
On arrival at La Panne I was
ordered to beach the ship head on one hour before high water, this
being the only possible way of disembarking the ammunition. The
tide at low water leaving the ship high and dry.
I was able
to land during the four hours available approximately 50 tons, which
was man-handled by troops above high water level; consisting of 25
pdr. A.A. and Beaufors and a. certain amount of smoke shell. We
embarked 400 troops.
At high water I took the ship off, but owing
to lack of compressed air for starting was unable to proceed when
once afloat. I was towed for three hours by "Brighton Belle", after
which I managed to get my compresser going and re-charged compressed
air bottles and started engines and landed the troops at Ramagate.
After proceeding to Sheerness we were instructed to land the 200 tons
of ammunition at Stroode, which was loaded into trucks. This was
done by the Military.
On completion we proceeded to Tilbury, but
four miles from Sheerness, owing to the oil pressure gauge registering
a false reading an oil failure occurred and the engine seized up.
I obtained a. tow and paid the ship off in the Surrey Docks, at 6.0.p.m.
on Wednesday June 5th.
On the journey out the ship was attacked three times
by a Heinkel Bomber, which dropped four 500 lb. bombs each with
approximately five second delay action fuse, the nearest falling 150
yards from the Ship.
Except for a severe shaking, no damage was
done to the Hull.
During a machine gun attack by the Heinkel it
was observed that a bullet penetrated the steel upper after-deck of
the "Tiny".
On the return journey an apparently unstable magnetic
mine blew up 100 yards abeam doing no material damage.
THe construction of these vessels must be of a very
high and strong standard. This dead weight heavy cargo loaded high
up each side of the hold must have set a severe strain on the frame while
the ship was high and dry, but no noticeable damage was done, except for
a general vibration when steaming home which was not present on the
outward journey.
I would like to pay tribute to my First Lieutenant,
Lieutenant Martin, the Cox'n and Crew, three of whom were Ordinary
Seamen, who had never been to sea before and the E.R.A., 5th class, who
ino
had only finished his disciplinary training a fortnight previously and
had never been in charge of any form of engine.
COMMODORE
R.N.
BARRACK
have the honour to be Sir,
OF
Your obedient Servant,
JUN

VA, A destroyer Dover, having reported that Dunkerque was
293
0830 I asked me if ships should be sent there. usable,
0830
signalled from HEBE that destroyers could At into
Dunkerque in succession and that troops were waiting come close
to the pier. Loading off beaches was proceeding slowly:
conditions were not bad, but the slight swell running in
was enough to render boats liable to broach to. At La
Panne and Braye, lorries were being driven into the sea to
form a sort of breakwater.
Noon
About midday there was an air attack on ships and on La
Panne. Later, when it had cleared a bit overhead, there
was an attack on Dunkerque. Several French destroyers
came in by Y channel and were fired on from the north of
La Panne; some guns tried to shell beach between Braye
and La Panne, but the steep dunes protected it.
On returning to La Panne met Stevenson who had transferred
to a motor launch and was doing excellent work. He saw
(9)
Lord Gort who was anxious to see me. As conditions were
getting worse and I did not want to get stranded, decided
to go to Dunkerque and drive to La Panne from there.
HEBE could not be detained any longer, so sent her back to
Dover with troops and wounded and told Bush to explain the
boat situation and point out vital necessity for sending
out boats and crews.
1530
Transferred my staff to WINDSOR and went into Dunkerque in
MTB 102, sent at my request. Badly wanted some means of
getting about quickly and a fast boat of light draught
would have been invaluable: when I did get one its endur-
ance was so low that it had to return almost at once to
Dover.
On getting to Dunkerque found Tennant was with Gort and
that to drive there would take up more time than I cared
to be away: decided to land from a boat after all.
The MTB had not enough fuel to reach La Panne and return
to Døver, SO boarded GOSSAMER and took her to La Panne
1730
where I transferred to WORCESTER at about 1730.
La Panne was in telephonic communication with England;
also received W/T messages from Dover. One (1749) said
ships were urgently wanted off La Panne: actually, at
1900, there were 4 destroyers and 1 minesweeper there and
situation was constantly changing.
G.H.Q. was in touch with Admiralty and VA, Dover, and gave
views and criticisisms of what was happening. This
probably accounts for signal from 1st SL on this day asking
if boats were distributed along beaches to best advantage.
Actually, only boats that could get inshore, except distri- pontoons
bution depended on position of ships they belonged but
and a few local craft, were the whalers, and their to.

So for as was possible I kept ships off all beaches, but in doing DO I
was badly hampered by the lack of means of gotting about quickly. Often
when I was off La Penne ships would arrive and stop off the other two
beaches, send in their boats and start loading, by then perhaps some off
La Panno would leave and a redistribution might be desivable, but it WAS
impracticable once ships had their boats may.
At 1900 small numbers of aircraft made attacks on I.O. Panne and ships
off the beaches and about this time a puffer, the "Tiny," loaded with
/Shoot.
ammunition arrived. She was told to beach herself at In Fanno, the
tide being then high; this she did and was cleared as the tide vont out,
though I believe 8. good deal of her cargo Was finally dumped in the 502.
At 2000 I started inshore again in "WORCESTER'S" whaler on my third
attempt to see Lord Gort, There was a slight swell and I got wet to the
waist landing. I took in with me my Flag Licutenant and a small party

To present a comprehensive view of the whole of the naval
operations at Dunkirk between May 27th and June 5th is as task
for the historian. No man who took an active part can hope
to describe anything beyond the activities of his own particular
unit or section, and only with the passing of time will the
expert be able to piece together the various reports of all who
took part.
This is the story of the small motor-boats and the part
they played, but even here a connected narrative is difficult,
if not impossible. Each boat with its own tiny crew was thrown
more or less upon its own resources; and upon the fortunes of
war and the initiative of each boat's captain depends the story
each may subsequently tell.
From all around the compass they came. Prom up the river,
along the coast, from the yachting harbours, the pleasure
beaches, Naval porta and fishing towns - anything that would
float, move under its am power, and collect a dozen men or 80
from the beaches where they waited.
The Meat assembly to gather at Sheerness was typical of the
she tlyuermads. A dozen or so of motor yachts
esquipped and amartly
erund a cluster of cheap
itin supueur craftamen who had

Vice Admiral, Dover. copy to 0.in O., Nore.
mitted in accordance with Nore General Order 448/40 relative to
ration "Dynamo".
On the morning of 27th.May I proceeded from Chatham to Portsmouth
:h draft, to take over Dutch ship "TINY". On arrival at Portsmouth I
3 informed that "TINY" had already been taken over by the C.O. and ships
mpany of "JAVA" which had broken down and was then undergoing repair,
1 I was instructed to proceed to Southampton and take command of the
tter ship;this I accordingly did on the evening of the same day.
On arrival off Dover a report was made through the Examination
essel to the effect that engineroom repairs were required and I was later
nstructed to berth alongside in Submarine Basin. This was done at
approx. 2230/30th.
Repair work was started the following day but at 2000 was stopped
is all ships were at immediate notice and remaining repairs would require
at least 24 hours. At that time the only repairs which had been completed
were the renewal of the driving belt and the restarting of the auxiliary

6th June 1940.
Vice Admiral Dover,
hr Commodine. R.N.B.
TINE
Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following report
on the operation carried out by H.M.S.
I ms able
to land during the four hours available approximately 50 tons, which
was man-handled by troops above high water level; consisting of 25
pdr. A.A. and Beaufors and a certain amount of smoke shell. We
embarked 400 troops.
I would like to pay tribute to my First Lieutenant,
Lieutenant Martin, the Cox'n and Crew, three of whom were Ordinary
ino
Seamen, who had never been to sea before and the E.R.A., 5th class, who
had only finished his disciplinary training a fortnight previously and
had never been in charge of any form of engine.
COMMODORE
R.N.
BARRACK
OF
have the honour to be Sir,
JUN
Your obedient Servant,
