RESOURS of office 5. 225 STOP FROODS The combings on that side were full of holes and most of the dead didi were lying on that side as far as I could see. When we were seen to be on fire H.M.S. "Malcolm" came alongside and started taking the soldiers off and some of the crew that were injured. grom Two lines of hose were passed onboard and started playing into No.5 Hold, but could not reach the Gun Platform which was alight. The ship's hose was brought into use, but as the Deck Service Pipe had been broken and holed in places, we did not get much pressure. While this was going on a Party were dumping the Petrol out of the two damaged A.L.C. also the ammunition from around the Gun Platform. (The High Angled Gun Breech Block was seen to be wrenched off.) While the wounded and troops were being transferred to H.M.S. "Malcolm" some of the native crew had got onboard and the Commander intended to put them back on the ship, but the Aeroplanes were coming at us again so she cast off, her Commander giving me a new course to steer. We continued with the hose aft, but the fire soon gained on us, and, as we had to take cover again while the raid was on, it soon got a good hold. Rifle ammunition was also popping off every few minutes, SO it became too dangerous togo near. When we found the Engines and shafting were alright and that the steering gear seemed to work I decided to try to put to sea. We had no sooner started to heave away/ All the Engineers aia excellent work at wiell and we understand the 4th Engineer (A.M. Rivett) manned a Bren Gun, by permission of the Chief Engineer, with effect on enemy planes. The Chief Steward .Onions, 2nd Steward J.F. Brown and Purser D.D. McMahon we understand aid heroic work in tending to the woundea, there being no Doctor on board. All the Medical Supplies and other consumable stores of our Catering Department were used to give Medical Comfort to the rescued.
