FLARE-BURNING DRINTERS OF THE DOVER COMMAND.
Captain Eric Wheler Bush, D.S.C., R.N.
continuous service in connection with the Calais operation
These 19 drifters had been employed on 10 days'
and on patrol immediately prior to the commencement of
DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked zeal
where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a

and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and
varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety
some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected
for special recognition of their gallant services.

H.M.Drifter THE BOYS: - Skipper Andrew Buchan, R.N.R., W.S.3319.
Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under
repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with
the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He
subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured,
clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the
highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick
list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's
behaviour was exceptional.
Recommended for decoration.
H.M. Drifter MIDAS. - Skipper Herbert Holden, R.N.R., W.8.3432.
Skipper H. Holden is commended for service in
action when in command of MIDAS. This Officer's
conduct and leadership were of the highest order.

RATINGS:
H.M.Drifter BOY ROY:- Skipper Dettman. R.N.R. (Decorated for this
operation in London Gazette of 7th June, 40
Chief Engineman Harry B. Sharman, LT/KX.105182.
When BOY ROY was damaged and in a sinking
condition, he remained in the engine room regardless
of any danger to himself, until his ship was beached,
the water having risen in the meanwhile to the
furnace door. He sent the rest of his engine room
crew up to safety and remained alone at his post.

warmly praised by his crew for his courage, and his

Lieutenant T. P. Graham, R.N.R.
Commended for service in action as Unit Officers
of Drifters. Both these officers completed several trips
to Dunkirk, and in addition did good work at Calais and
Boulogne. Their conduct throughout operations was
exemplary and they set a very good example to Skippers and
their crews.

Commander Reginald Wastell English, R.N.
Commander English was severely injured by explosion
of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship
was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost
exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out
boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after
being rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on
the need for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her falling into
the hands of the enemy and then collapsed, due to internal
injuries. He is now in hospital and his condition gives
cause for grave anxiety.

forecful language and the rifle-butt induced French
troops, who were lying on the Mole, to embark. Reached
Dover with a full load of troops after a 6 hour voyage
under own power. Displayed considerable determination
and initiative.

Newhaven Lifeboat ROSA WOOD and PHYLLIS LUND. - Able Seaman W.J.
Morris, P/JX. 26097, in Command.

RATINGS:
Able Seaman W. J. Morris, P/JX.26097.
With a crew of one stoker and one ordinary seaman,
carried out two independent trips to the beach and to Dunkirk
harbour. Encountered great difficulty off the beaches due
to deep draught of lifeboat, and during the night rescued a
number of troops from motor-launch and drifting boats off
shore. Was dissatisfied with his efforts and proceeded
back to Dunkirk harbour, where during the night 2/6 - 3/6
under artillery fire ferried off about 700 troops to various
ships, and assisted in removing troops from the personnel
vessel ROUEN aground in the harbour. Finally returned to
Dover with a full load. This was Morris's first experience
as Coxswain of any boat. He showed great determination and
gallantry under fire in his independent command.

REPORT I.
Sr
On Saturday, June 3rd, I received instructions to take charge
of the Motor Launch AURA and proceed to a beach East of Dunkirk Harbour.
Left Dover Harbour towed by drifter GIRL GLADYS at 15.30.
Before leaving it had been reported to me that the AURA'S engine was not
operating successfully, in as much that she would not come astern. As
the weather appeared to be favourable there seemed no reason why the
operation could not be carried out.

We shipped from GIRL GLADYS in the proximity of 5W Buoy and
proceeded Eastwards. I was able to tow cutters from one of the Paddle
Steamers to the beach on this first trip inwards. The time was 0100 -
About 100 British troops were transferred from the shore to various
vessels. The engine was giving considerable trouble so that shortly
after 0215, June 4th, it failed completely.
The launch was then manoeuvred towards some Thames Sailing
Barges, and we endeavoured to repair the engine. On examination we
found that a defective dynamo was causing the trouble, and as operations
were ordered to cease at 0300, I decided to abandon AURA at 0245. I
transferred the crew to a dinghy which we found, and then managed to
get aboard a "paddle steamer" which was getting under way. All members
of my crew behaved excellently throughout the twelve hours.
REPORT II.
2nd
On Sunday, June 4th, I repaired aboard the drifter YORKSHIRE
LASS in the capacity of Skipper. I received orders to proceed to Dunkirk
Harbour. Leaving Dover at about 1515, we arrived off Dunkirk at 0000.
Off the S. Foreland Ljeutenant Commander Prior, Royal Navy, was transferred
from the drifter .UTPROSIM aboard the YORKSHIRE LASS.
There was little delay in arriving alongside and we started
embarking French troops before 0030. Another drifter arrived alongside
our vessel so we transferred our troops and carried on loading. By 00115
we seemed to be practically full. There appeared to be no more troops
on our portion of the jetty and I dispatched a soldier to see if we could
collect another 50 men. Other ships were arriving alongside, so by 0130
we were steaming out of the Harbour.
During the whole operation, and during the passage, the troops
behaved in an orderly manner. During the homeward passage the vessel
developed a hot bearing, and as it was just daybreak, I signalled SUN XI of
to take us in tow until repairs were effected. Within three quarters
an hour we proceeded under our own power and arrived in Harbour at 0830
Monday, June 5th.
The whole ships company were highly efficient in their duty,
and on investigation 100 French troops and 3 British Tommies had been
transported.
The British Tommies reported as having lost their division,
and had only arrived in Dunkirk on Saturday.

9. 800 troops were landed at Dover during the forenoon from
Drifters returning from Dunkirk. A/S Trawler "Kingston Andalusite"
reported what was considered a successful attack on a submarine off
"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "I" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "T" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
Monday, 3rd June.
13. Drifters returned with French troops from Dunkirk,
landing at Dover roughly 1600 men. Drifters "Lord Howe", "Shipmates",
"Girl Gladys", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Golden Sunbeam", "Forecast",
"Ut Prosim", 'Lord Howard", sailed for Dunkirk. A/S Trawler

DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked of zeal
particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour,
and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and
where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a
varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety
some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected
for special recognition of their gallant services.

Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under
repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with
the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He
subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured,
clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the
highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick
list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's
behaviour was exceptional.

H.M.Drifter MIDAS. - Skipper Herbert Holden, R.N.R., W.S.3432.
Skipper H. Holden is commended for service in

Commander English was severely injured by explosion
of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship
was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost
exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out
boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after
being the for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her falling internal into
rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on
the need of the enemy and then collapsed, due to
injuries. hands He is now in hospital and his condition gives
cause for grave anxiety.

Sub.-Lieutenant Chodzko performed valuable work
off the beaches for 12 hours on June lst. Handi-
capped by the extremely unreliable engine of his boat, he
showed great determination in making the best use of his
craft and ferrying a large number of troops. After the
final breakdown of his motor-boat, he was appointed
Skipper of H. M. Drifter YORKSHIRE LASS and under the
command of Lieutenant-Commander Prior, R.N., did excellent
work in the Inner Harbour, Dunkirk, on the night of June
2nd.

Motor-Boat SKYLARK and Lowestoft Lifeboat MICHAEL STEPHENS. Sub.-
Lieutenant Marwood J. R. Yeatman.
Recommendation.
Took charge of motor-boat SKYLARK on the 31st May
in tow for Dunkirk. Tow failed and Sub.-Lieutenant
Yeatman returned to port and did valuable work in over-
hauling the engines of motor boats which had broken down.
Next day he proceeded in SKYLARK to Dunkirk and rescued
survivors of various bombed ships, returning to Dover under
own power p.m. Next day commissioned MICHAEL STEPHENS,
Lowestoft Lifeboat, with a crew of two stokers and one

H.M.Drifter THE BOYS: - Skipper Andrew Buchan, R.N.R., W.8.3319.
Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under
repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with
the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He
subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured,
clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the
highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick
list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's
behaviour was exceptional.
Recommended for decoration.
H.M.Drifter MIDAS. - Skipper Herbert Holden, R.N.R., w.s.3432.
Skipper H. Holden is commended for service in
action when in command of MIDAS. This Officer's
conduct and leadership were of the highest order.

conduct at Calais and Dunkirk was magnificent,

Lieutenant T. P. Graham, R.N.R.
Commended for service in action as Unit Officers
of Drifters. Both these officers completed several trips
to Dunkirk, and in addition did good work at Calais and
Boulogne. Their conduct throughout operations was
exemplary and they set a very good example to Skippers and
their crews.

Commander Reginald Wastell English. R.N.
Commander English was severely injured by explosion
of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship
was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost
exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out
boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after
being the for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her to falling internal into
rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on
the injuries. hands He is now in hospital and his
need of the enemy and then collapsed, condition due gives
cause for grave anxiety.

THURSDAY, 30TH MAY
CHAP. VII
German battery. When the Bourrasque was about 5 miles north of Nieuport
buoy a shock was felt, followed by one more violent; smoke rose from the tor-
pedo firing platform and there was a big escape of steam. The ship stopped
and the electricity failed. It was difficult to say if the ship was seriously
damaged; there was a breach in the deck and water was entering some com-
partments, but it was not possible to get to the engine room toassess the damage
there. During this time, not unnaturally, a certain degree of panic, which
had to be controlled, reigned among this mixed crowd of passengers; some of
them threw themselves into the water, while others lowered the boats and threw
themselves into them in such numbers that they sank, even the rafts. Order
was, however, restored. The Branlebas was approaching. It soon became
evident, however, that the Bourrasque was doomed, and abandon ship" was
ordered¹.
At 1625 the French torpedo boat Branlebas, which had been 4 cables astern
of the Bourrasque, saw a heavy explosion take place in the Bourrasque which
disappeared from view in a column of smoke and water. When the column
subsided the Bourrasque appeared to have broken in two and was sinking
rapidly. She had apparently struck a French mine. The Branlebas, which
had already embarked 300 troops from Dunkirk picked up 100 survivors,
the drifter Ut Prosim 250, and the drifter Yorkshire Lass (assisted by an English
motor launch) 194. At 0530 next morning the motor vessel Bat, en route for
Dunkirk, took off 15 naked and oil-covered survivors from the capsized wreck
of the Bourrasque.
It is officially considered by the French Admiralty that the Bourrasque was
sunk by a mine, but her Captain was of the opinion that her sinking was the
result of one or more shell hits.
Troops embark at the double
Following the disastrous air attacks on massed shipping on the 29th May
S.N.O., Dunkirk, decided on the 30th May that only one destroyer at a time
should enter Dunkirk and secure alongside the east pier. This policy was
adhered to throughout the forenoon and early afternoon.
At about 1700 Captain Tennant turned over the duties of S.N.O., Dunkirk,
to Commander G. O. Maund, R.N., and went by car to G.H.Q. at La Panne
"to confer with Lord Gort.
Cdr. Maund says: "Towards the close of the day [i.e. the 30th] a great
number of ships had arrived, and I accordingly decided to accept the risk of
further losses, and ordered the vessels waiting in the roads to proceed alongside
and embark troops. Strong air attacks were launched by the enemy, but
fortunately they were mostly concentrated against wrecks in the roads. Time
and again they sent waves of bombers and directed their attack, not against
our ships loading troops, but only against these wrecks in the roads. We got
a great deal of amusement and satisfaction from this, for loading was proceeding
apace with no casualties. At the same time, I decided that the rate of embarka-
tion must in some way be speeded up as the capacity of the ships now alongside
was more than adequate for the rate of the flow of troops. This laid our vessels
open to attack from the air. I therefore went down to the Eastern Arm and
rigged up a loud speaker2 and addressed the troops in the following terms
Remember your pals, boys. The quicker you get on board, the more of them
will be saved.' This", continues Cdr. Maund, worked like a miracle. The

The movement from England towards Dunkirk commenced at 1700. The
armada consisted of 13 personnel vessels, 2 large store carriers, 11 destroyers,

6 skoots, 2 armed yachts, 1 gunboat, a large number of tugs, lifeboats, etc.,
formed either in organised tows or proceeding individually. For various
reasons, however, not all of these ships evacuated troops.¹
The composition of the French contingent was not known at Dover. Actually,
3 French torpedo boats, two minesweeping trawlers, two patrol vessels, and
17 trawlers and motor fishing vessels landed troops in England on the 3rd June.
One Belgian patrol boat and 16 or 17 trawlers brought troops.
B.E.F. evacuated, 2330/2
The first destroyers to reach Dunkirk were the Sabre and Shikari, which
sailed together from Dover at 1845. As the latter ship rounded No. 6 W buoy
enemy shore batteries opened fire, but caused no damage. Berthing was
carried out by an officer with a loud speaker at the pier head. Both destroyers
sailed again at 2200, the Sabre with 500 and the Shikari with 700 troops. The
Venomous, which arrived at 2150, had difficulty in going alongside the East Pier.
This was not a solid jetty, but was built of concrete piles through which the
west-going tide set. This, coupled with a fresh easterly wind, made it very

REPORT I.
1st
On Saturday, June 3rd, I received instructions to take charge
of the Motor Launch AURA and proceed to a beach East of Dunkirk Harbour.
Left Dover Harbour towed by drifter GIRL GLADYS at 15.30.
Before leaving it had been reported to me that the AURA'S engine was not
operating successfully, in as much that she would not come astern. As
the weather appeared to be favourable there seemed no reason why the
operation could not be carried out.

We shipped from GIRL GLADYS in the proximity of 5W Buoy and
proceeded Eastwards. I was able to tow cutters from one of the Paddle
Steamers to the beach on this first trip inwards. The time was 0100 -
About 100 British troops were transferred from the shore to various
vessels. The engine was giving considerable trouble so that shortly
after 0215, June 4th, it failed completely.
The launch was then manoeuvred towards some Thames Sailing
Barges, and we endeavoured to repair the engine. On examination we
found that a defective dynamo was causing the trouble, and as operations
were ordered to cease at 0300, I decided to abandon AURA at 0245. I
transferred the crew to a dinghy which we found, and then managed to
get aboard a "paddle steamer" which was getting under way. All members
of my crew behaved excellently throughout the twelve hours.
REPORT II.
2nd
On Sunday, June 4th, I repaired aboard the drifter YORKSHIRE
LASS in the capacity of Skipper. I received orders to proceed to Dunkirk
Harbour. Leaving Dover at about 1515, we arrived off Dunkirk at 0000.
Off the S. Foreland Lieutenant Commander Prior, Royal Navy, was transferred
from the drifter U.UTPROSIM aboard the YORKSHIRE LASS.
There was little delay in arriving alongside and we started
embarking French troops before 0030. Another drifter arrived alongside
our vessel so we transferred our troops and carried on loading. By 00115
we seemed to be practically full. There appeared to be no more troops
on our portion of the jetty and I dispatched a soldier to see if we could
collect another 50 men. Other ships were arriving alongside, so by 0130
we were steaming out of the Harbour.
During the whole operation, and during the passage, the troops
behaved in an orderly manner. During the homeward passage the vessel
developed a hot bearing, and as it was just daybreak, I signalled SUN XI
to take us in tow until repairs were effected. Within three quarters of
an hour we proceeded under our own power and arrived in Harbour at 0830
Monday, June 5th.
The whole ships company were highly efficient in their duty,
and on investigation 100 French troops and 3 British Tommies had been
transported.
The British Tommies reported as having lost their division,
and had only arrived in Dunkirk on Saturday.

"T" Buoy. Drifters "Yorkshire Lass", "Golden Sunbeam", and "Girl
Gladys" filled up with troops alongside Eastern Arm, Dunkirk, and
sailed for Dover. Drifter "Ut Prosim" rescued 250 men from a French
Destroyer "Barasque" sunk by shell fire. The three other Drifters
landed 700 men at Dover.
Friday, 31st May.
10. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" reached Margate with
survivors from French Destroyer "Sirocco", torpedoed off "I" Buoy.
Lieutenant T.P. Graham, R.N.R., on return in Drifter "Forecast"
reported difficult conditions, owing to swell and weather for boat-
work on the Dunkirk beaches, a large number of boats being wrecked
and broken down.
Saturday, 1st June.
11. A/S Trawler "Stella Dorado" was torpedoed off "T" Buoy,
survivors being brought in by "Kingston Galena", as reported in my
submission No.DL/250/11/AP dated 1st June 1940. All available
Drifters were ordered to sail for Dunkirk. "Netsukis", "Lord Howard",
"Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas", "Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys",
"Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed. A/S Trawlers "Lady Philomena"
and "Olvina" arrived with survivors from S.S. "Prague" and H.M.S.
"Basilisk". Two Drifters, "Gervais Rentoul" and "Eileen Emma"
returned damaged and unseaworthy after collisions with other craft.
Sunday, 2nd June.
12. Drifters returned to Dover landing 1800 men. They were
all brought to immediate notice for a further trip to Dunkirk.
"Shipmates", "Lord Howard", "Lord Howe", "Golden Sunbeam", "Midas",
"Golden Gift", "Girl Gladys", "Forecast", "Yorkshire Lass", sailed.
Drifters went alongside Eastern quay, filled up with troops and
returned to Dover. Practically all the troops evacuated were French.
A/S Trawlers "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" were sunk by enemy
action between "S" and "I" Buoys, as reported in my submission
No. DL/259/33/AP dated 5th June 1940. "Blackburn Rovers" had
obtained a contact which was subsequently attacked by A/S Trawler
"Saon", it is considered successfully. A/S Trawler "Grimsby Town"
screened and stood by a damaged transport off North Goodwin Light
Vessel.
