X E.M.E.D. Walton & Frinton life boat Lieut. R.H. Mead, R.N.V.R. [see Tel. W.H. Cooley. 1st June 0715 Taken in tow by the dfr. Thrifty. Other ships in the tow were the M.L/Bs Greater London, Abdy Beauclerk, and the M/B's P.E.42 Summer Maid and White Bear. 0725 Left Dover. 1537 Met the Yvonne et Moabe (of Gravelines) with 1 English soldier heading for England - she turned and headed towards Dunkirk. 1615 Air attack. Tow broken by blast. Men thrown in water; all picked up. About this time, the Yvonne et Moabe was sunk by a direct hit. 1635 Air attack continues. 1652 Bombs heard dropping. Drifters heading home without leaving orders. Some small boats turn back. 1710 Abdy Beauclerk, only, in company. 1718 The life boat'Rosa Wood" [i.e. the Rosa Wood and Phyllis Lunn] joined company. The Rosa Wood and Phyllis Lunn decided to return to Dover. 1740 Closed a drifter. 1821 Air attack continues. The Abdy Beauclerk and the Rosa Wood turn back. 1854 Lieut. Mead in the E.M.E.D. carried on towards Dunkirk. 1926 The M/B Cairngorm in reply to a query, signalled "steer S.55 E. for Dunkirk". 2030ca Joined company with the tug Sun IV. 2044 Arrived off Dunkirk with Sun IV. 2100 Lt. Mead boarded the Sun IV. 2135 Dunkirk harbour. Ferried troops to the M/S Niger and other ships lying out- side the harbour. Whilst coming alongside the Niger [towing a boat in which was Sea Cadet Lieut. Sidmouth- Willing], a shell exploded nearby; Lieutenant Mead was mortally wounded, and died in 15 minutes. (1) 2nd June 0423 The E.M.E.D. left Dunkirk in tow of the Sun IV. 1010 Arrived Ramsgate. 1030 The Sun IV and the E.M.E.D. together disembarked 142 troops. (See Sun IV) 3rd June 1026 Left Ramsgate. 1355 Arrived Dover. Total 39 Authority - R.O.II, p.230. The following awards were made: Mention in Despatches (Posthumous) Ty. Lieut. R.H. Mead, R.N.V.R. Mention 1n Despatches P.O. Tel. W.H. Cooley. A.B. J.L. MacManus. (1) Report by Surg. Lieut. of Niger. 279

KINDRED STAR M/S drifters T.W. Sheridan, Tempy. Skip. THRIFTY (Portland) G. Corney, Tempy. Skip. R.N.R. Lieut. A.J. Dunbar, R.N.V.R., R.N.R. Unit Officer 29th May 1900 Left Portland. 30th May 1730 Arrived off Dover. 31st May 1400 Berthed alongside Prince of Wales Pier. 1st June 0700 Both ships sailed, each towing 6 small boats. (1) 1530 Air attack in vicinity of Dunkirk roads. 1610 Air attack. The tows were slipped for safety. Altered course away from shore batteries. A trawler was seen to be hit, afterwards sinking; 1620 another vessel was blown to pieces. (2) Kindred Star received damage in engine room. The tow had scattered and returned to port independently - 1800 except 3 life boats. These were taken in tow, and then slipped at their request. 1830 Air attack near V buoy. - Entered Ramsgate harbour. 2nd June Repairs to Kindred Star. Thrifty reported to be leaking badly. 4th June 0925 Left Ramsgate for Portland. Nil be Authority - R.O.II, p.344. (1) Vessels were:- Greater London life the boat, Abdy Beauclerk in tow of life Thrifty boat, E.M.E.D. life boat, and Among those in 42, tow of Kindred star were the M/B's M/B's P.E. Summer Maid, and White Bear. (2) This was probably the French vessel Yvonne et Moabe Wings of the Morning, windsong. (See under E.M.E.D.) 117
