0 potential matching records have currently been identified.
Further indexing may identify vessel particulars, reported movements, participation assessments, named personnel and source references. The absence of a current match does not establish that no relevant source exists.
We are compiling and checking transcriptions, metadata, vessel-name matches, source references and reuse permissions before publishing further detail. This work helps prevent incomplete OCR, historic spelling variations or unverified associations from being presented as established fact.
Account registrations and access to these developing records are temporarily unavailable. Existing account holders may log in, and everyone can join the newsletter for publication updates.
1 potential matching record has been identified.
These records may contain service-list entries, vessel metadata, source-page references and protected full-size document images. A match does not by itself prove that the vessel participated in Operation Dynamo.
“Potential match” means a candidate returned by one or more indexing rules; it is not necessarily an exact identity match. Depending on the source, matching may use a normalised vessel name, a partial text or OCR hit, an alias, or related metadata. Roman-numeral suffixes such as I, II, III, IV and V may be absent, misread or separated from the base name, so records for similarly named vessels can be grouped incorrectly. Multi-word names can also produce candidates where only one significant word matches. Confirm the full name, numeral, vessel type, dimensions, builder, ownership, dates and source context before treating two records as the same vessel.

These details have been aggregated from multiple sources and may include contemporary records, later recollections, claims or assertions for which no corroborating evidence has been identified. Inclusion does not establish that any account or assertion is accurate. The information may be incomplete, out of date, disputed or incorrect and should be checked against the underlying source records and independent evidence before being relied upon.

As they neared Dunkirk a "long line of destroyers came out of the harbour. " Astern of them", stated the Holland, there was a gap of over a mile and then a large and fast trans- port". M.A/S.B. 7 led the Holland through the gap between the destroyer line and the transport. When the latter was 6 cables away, and steaming very fast with the first streaks of dawn behind her, the danger of collision became apparent, SO the Holland sounded one blast and put her wheel hard astarboard. Lieutenant-Commander E. C. Coats, R.N., captain of the blockship, reported that the transport had then only to alter course 5° to starboard to pass well clear. However, she appeared to alter to port", with the result that she struck the Holland hard on the bridge and just before the boiler room bulkhead. The transport, which did not appear to have sustained much damage, backed out and carried on her way. The Holland had no buoyancy in hand, and, a few seconds before she was struck, her captain ordered abandon ship", seeing that it was inevitable she would be rammed. The bows sunk at once and rested on the bottom, there being apparently only 8 feet of water under her keel; the stern remained above water. Two seamen were crushed and seriously injured in the collision. M.A/S.B.7 took off the crew and transferred them to the Vivacious. The wreck of the Holland came within an ace of being rammed a second time, for two more ships, reported to be destroyers, passed and missed the Holland's stern by no more than a few feet. At 0300 the blockship Westcove entered Dunkirk, followed ten minutes later by the Edvard Nissen. Both ships proceeded into the channel leading to the inner harbour. When in her allotted position the Westcove put her wheel hard astarboard to ram the Inner Western Jetty, but her bows struck mud about 50 feet from the pier, with the ship at an angle of about 30° across the channel. By going full speed ahead on the engines, the athwartship's angle was increased to 50°. As the Edvard Nissen came in with the intention of ramming the East Pier she endeavoured to strike the Westcove's stern a glancing blow in order to in- crease her angle to the channel before scuttling herself; but underestimating the strength of the ebb stream she passed close under the Westcove's stern, and rammed the East Pier abreast of the latter. Letting go an anchor, she applied full port helm with all engine power to increase the blocking angle. The Westcove now fired her scuttling charges, which probably owing to coal gas in the bunkers, caused a large column of flame and smoke to envelop the ship's stern. When this had dissipated, the crew, who had pulled clear in their boat, saw that the Westcove had slid off the sloping bank of the channel and was lying on an even keel in the line of the piers, almost in mid stream, thus causing a minimum of obstruction. Between the sterns of the two ships there was now a gap of 80 feet which was reduced to 50 feet by heaving on a hawser run by the Edvard Nissen's motor boat from the ship's stern to the Westcove. No more could be done and the Edvard Nissen abandoned ship and fired her scuttling charges from the boat. M.A/S.B. 7 took out both ship's crews to the Vivacious. 1 No transport reported being in collision at this time and it has not been possible to identify any of the vessels concerned. The following destroyers and transports sailed from Dunkirk at the times given destroyers - Vanquisher 0230, Whitshed 2045, Malcolm 0248, Codrington 0250 and Express 0250; transports Newhaven (French 1,888 tons) 0245, Tynwald (British 2,376 tons) 0300, Rouen (French, 1,882 tons time not known but ship was in Dunkirk in the early hours of 3rd June), and Côte Argent (French 3,047 tons, time not known but ship landed troops at Dover on 3rd June.) 112

Officer in could be oney ha nt that ed go 11th June, 19 In accordance with last nights instruction I am sending a report e the fishing fleet from the Eastern District sent for the evacuation of th tish Expeditionary Force. ed on On 30th May, shortly before 1700, I received your telephone messa so, of ould all boats capable of crossing the English Channel should be ordered to at once. I at once got in touch with suitable persons, usually the Cd wer Hannam g thirty of statistics, at different points round the coast and explained to th extreme urgency of the situation. Contact with the different stations established as under:- Wells. 1700. Yarmouth. 1915. Leigh-on-Sea. 1710. Maldon. 1935. Harwich. 1730. Burnham. 1940. Deben Estuary. 1740. West Mersea. 1945, Sheringham. 1800. Orford. 2010. Brightlingsea. 1805. At some stations it was evident that the Naval Authorities were also II in the same matter and yachts were also being detailed. Early in the day Lieut. Cator, R.N.V.R., from the Small Vessels Pool had visited Lowestoft a Yarmouth to select yachts and I remained in touch with him during his visit. the evening I visited Kessingland and found that the boats, mostly with car a engines and no reverse gear, were unsuitable for the service. This also ap to Aldeburgh. At 2110 Mr. Hannah notified that the two large Sheringham Whll boats had sailed. There was no discussion of terms or conditions. The sed fishermen simply knew they were urgently wanted and they had a pretty good id why. Some left for Lowestoft immediately they came ashore from the fishing grounds. Early on the morning of June 1st I reported on the situation to N.O Lowestoft as the little ships had to be routed, supplied with fuel and etc. by all him. He asked me to take full charge of the operations. This simplified th work and by noon 16 vessels from stations to the North of and including Lowes were ready for the first stage of their journey complete with petrol, paraffi water and 4 days provision. These sailed at 1420. Others were standing b as under orders but were eventually not required. The vessels from stations of Lowestoft came for the most part under direct orders from local naval authorities. Lists of all vessels advised by our various representatives in the attached schedules. La Volunteers for crews were not lacking and it is of passing interest tha youngest volunteer was 141, a Coastguard' S son Peter Haines, a sea scout, and the eldest man was 73 (Mr. C.A. Pegg). The latter has now returned to his crab fishing and the Coastguard's son has been appointed messenger to the 1st. Lieut, Naval Base, here. In view of the difficulty likely to be experienced by the fishermen when dealing with the Naval Authority at Harwich and Ramsgate it was B agreed that Mr. Graham should accompany the party. This proved a most Later satisfactory arrangement and his handling of the variety of problems which arose 200 called the highest praise from the fishermen. The following is his report:- 9th J 1030 "We left Lowestoft for Harwich at 1420 on 1st June in a group of sixteen Rose boats. T. Nielsen of Wells was Chief Skipper. Although our Surveyor met the Owners and concluded a settlement in the sum of £321.18.. it was later found that the damages and losses incurred were not the result of the Dunkirk operations, although some of the craft had originally been inspected and considered for that operation. They subsequently became involved in, firstly, the evacuation of Ramsgate Harbour, following Dunkirk and then in the bombing of the Port of London. It has been found necessary to look further into the history of these craft. Investigations are not yet complete, but if it is considered that the Government is liable for the sum involved, either by way of preparation for the Dunkirk service, or for treatment under the War Damage Act, the case will go to the Treasury for special consideration. 212A ENCLOSURE II. TO FORD'S NO. 541 of 17th. JUNE, 1940. 200 REPORT BY ABLE SEAMAN NO.275. L.P. STRAND - CREW OF MOTOR BOAT P.M. 29th. Left Littlehampton. Got permission, after much trouble to enter and stay night in Newhaven. A.M. 30th. Left Newhaven for Ramsgate and arrived P.M. - refuelled and awaited orders. A.M. 31st. At 4.30 A.M. ordered to leave Ramsgate independently, for Dunkirk. C.P.O. Leighton i/c, Stoker Benham and Able Seaman Strand. Outside harbour picked up convoy of small boats. 3 hours out approx. developed leak in Port Stern Gland. C.P.O. Lighton ordered me (Strand) to turn ship and return to Ramsgate. Arrived back in Ramsgate P.M. and had Gland repacked. A.M. 1st. 4.30 again ordered to Dunkirk. Before leaving 8 Sub- Lieutenants (R.N.V.R. volunteered to join boat as their engine had given them trouble. Got charts etc., and got under way. No convoy. Near Dunkirk, boat struck obstacle or shook from bomb explosion. Warships in vicinity continually repelling air attacks. Just off shore at Dunkirk we saw all small boats suddenly turn about and leave, as if ordered so our Officer i/c decided on own responsibility to do likewise. No ship near to give a general order. On turning saw 2 large ships steaming away from Dunkirk packed with soldiers. Suddenly a crowd of German bombers came out of the clouds, dropped their bombs and disappeared. Direct hits were registered on both big ships which sank within 20 minutes. All small boats, including ours, naturally steamed all out to pick up survivors. We picked up 10 and as bombs fell, Officer 1/c decided to make back to Ramsgate. Large destroyer on the scene of resume was being bombed but kept raiders off. After steaming back for approx. $ hour saw three trawlers, 2 on Stb. hand and 1 on Port. I saw one making morse signal and shouted to C.P.O. on wheel to stop engines and asked for torch to try and answer signal, but could not be heard or was disregarded. Shot fired across bowa, but still steaming fast towards trawlers. Next thing, very heavy firing from I think, all 3 trawlers, our boat being the target at about 1,600 yards. All hands except both R.N.V.R. Officers and myself went over the side. Firing eased a little so I grabbed our ensign and waved it as I could plainly ace they were our own chaps. Firing ceased, trawler sent boat after chaps in water, got our boat alongside. Both Officers, C.P.O. Lighton and several survivors wounded, 1 dead (perhaps 2) belonging to crew of sunk transport. Later took our boat in tow (messed up a bit) and transferred us to a minesweeper which eventually took us into Ramagate. I moored our boat at Pier and being ignorant of what reports, if any, had been sent decided to report by wire, which I did, Sun. 2nd. Stoker Benham and self reported again to N.O.i/c. Got orders to leave boat where it was, would be looked after, handed rail warrant for Littlehampton. On arrival P.M. reported to Commander personally. (SIGNED) L.F. STRAND.
