As Chief Boatswain's Mate was most active in organising work in embarking troops and a most inspiring influence between decks while the ship was engaged.

As one of the boat's crew stuck to his job without relief and displayed fortitude and lack of thought for himself in embarking troops from the beach.

As gunlayer of "B" gun exercised initiative and worked hard to produce a high state of efficiency at his gun of which he was in charge.

Showed great resource in keeping steam in the boilers under most difficult conditions. On one occasion the main feed tank was left completely empty for a moment, Fletcher at once switched over to the reserve feed tank, thus averting a serious breakdown.

Watchkeeper, continually nursing the auxiliary machinery without having to be told what to do, showing exceptional initiative at all times.

H.M.S. SALADIN. - Lieutenant-Commander Lawrence J. Dover, R.N.
This ship proceeded to La Panne beach on 29th May, but when off Dunkirk was attacked by aircraft and as a result of damage received she returned to Dover, and was unable to take a further part in the evacuation.
Recommendations.
OFFICERS:
Lieutenant John Henry Edwards, R.N. (Retired).
During one attack by aircraft a fire was reported aft and Lieutenant Edwards was sent to deal with it. He found the ready use cordite in the after gun position burning and with the aid of two able seamen threw the burning charges overboard, as also the charges in another box which was burning.

Showed great skill and seamanship in all trips, especially initiative in using his boats and carley floats. Displayed great devotion to duty whilst ship was repeatedly bombed and machine gunned.

Acting Leading Stoker F. Putt, D/KX.84370.
In addition to carrying out his normal engine room duties over a period of six days, was untiring in his efforts in the ship's cutter gig. Showed great gallantry in saving lives of soldiers by jumping into the sea and cutting their equipment off.

Canteen Manager A. Harris.
Had only been at sea for one month. Did magnificent work throughout the six days, continually supplying comforts and food for the troops embarked and in addition was invaluable in the First Aid
Station in assisting the wounded.

H.M.S. DUNDALK - Lieutenant Commander Frederick Arthur Ivone
Kirkpatrick, R.N. (Ret.).
This ship was employed in embarking troops from the beaches and Dunkirk.
Recommendation.

Able Seaman W. T. Elmslie, D/RHRY 19014.
Was employed in boats embarking troops from the in beaches. By his initiative and judgment whilst charge of whaler was able to save many lives.
Recommended for advancement.

Stoker Petty Officer Charles William Donnelly, D/K.5995.
Acting Cook Albert Victor Hocking, D/MX.58549.
When the ship was bombed everyone aft was killed or badly wounded except these two men. Stoker Petty
Officer Donnelly's duty was "in charge of the after fire and repair party". Hocking formed one of the
First Aid Party. The fire main aft was blown away and fire broke out in the cabin flat immediately above the after magazine. These two men, working entirely on their own initiative, ran hoses aft from the first connection and succeeded in getting the fire under control and hoses down the after magazine hatch to flood the magazine (the magazine flooding arrangements were destroyed) and partly flooded it before assistance came. Their prompt and efficient action probably saved the ship.

Signalman Charles Raymond Craig, D/JX.141848.
Landed with an officer to organise embarkation on the beach, then joined one of the embarkation posts, took charge of the signalling apparatus and got into communication with several ships. When the station was destroyed by bombing, Craig improvised a signal lamp out of the headlight of a lorry and used this until the battery ran down. He remained ashore all night and was eventually sent back by the embarkation officer. On arrival at Dover he volunteered to go over to Dunkirk pier, where signalmen were required, and spent another night there.

Ramsgate and Margate Base Organisation (Continued).
Since the outbreak of hostilities he has borne the brunt of all the difficult problems of organising Contraband Control and Naval Officer's in Charge Offices, during which time he never spared himself working long hours and proving an invaluable adviser on all Merchant Shipping and Mercantile problems as well as an able Secretary.
Lieutenant Commander St. John George Hanson Pitt, R.N. (Retd.)
(Maintenance Lieut. Cdr. MERRIE ENGLAND).
For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty as
Maintenance Officer in MERRIE ENGLAND Barracks.
Throughout the operation he met successfully all the many demands made upon his department. He accommodated and detailed all ratings lent, turned part of the building into a casualty clearing station, ran snack bars and clothing depots with the aid of local residents, returned Naval casualties and survivors in large numbers without hitch to their depots and successfully competed with each new aspect of the situation.

Temporary Paymaster Sub. Lieutenant Maxwell Kerr Hamilton, R.N.V.R
(Assistant Secry)
For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty. This young officer, normally Assistant Secretary in my office, was sent to Margate to prepare and take charge of a temporary office instituted for the officer sent to take charge there. Throughout the whole time he remained on duty with only odd hours snatched for sleep and meals, maintaining his office with a complete record of Naval personnel landed there, arranging burials, accommodation, transport, casualties, stores and provisions, all of which he successfully coped with despite his limited experience.

Temporary Lieutenant George Christopher Newman, R.N.V.R.
For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty while acting as Pier Officer at Margate throughout the operation. He received and despatched all vessels ut sent there, arranged re-servicing for coal, fuel and provisions, and acted as liaison with the
Military.
