Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
H.M.S. VIMY - Lieutenant Adrian Paul Northey, R.N. 28th & 29th May.

VIMY made one trip to Dunkirk escorting 4 transports, on 27th May, followed by 5 trips between 28th and 31st May in which a total of 2,976 troops were brought home.
On the 27th May, at 2355, her Captain (Lieutenant
Commander R. G. K. Knowling, R.N.) left the bridge and was not seen again. Lieutenant Northey took command and carried on to Dunkirk at 26 knots after a thorough search of the ship had been made.
On passage back to Dover p.m. 28th with 613 troops on board, VIMY was attacked by several bombers but avoiding action prevented any hits being obtained by the aircraft.
Lieutenant Commander Ewart-Wentworth, R.N. assumed command of VIMY 29th May, On the 30th May, VIMY was under gunfire from shore batteries bombarding Dunkirk harbour, but was not hit.
1st June, VIMY collided with AMULREE and had to return to Dover and took no further part in the operation.

Lieutenant Adrian Paul Wilbraham Northey, R.N.
Was in temporary command of H.M.S. VIMY on the 27th and 28th May, when he went twice to Dunkirk and brought back 1,204 troops. Handled his ship with skill, both at Dunkirk, and during repeated bombing attacks while on passage home on the 28th, thereby avoiding damage to his ship. As First Lieutenant, during the remainder of the operation, showed consistent devotion to duty.
Recommended for decoration.

For carrying out his navigational duties with consistent efficiency during the evacuation of Dunkirk in difficult circumstances.
