Though only 18 years of age, showed great initiative and leadership in taking charge of soldiers on after lower mess deck, instructing them to place hammocks against the ship's side and afterwards extinguishing a fire.
Recommended for mention.
Able Seaman Harold Alfred Keeling, D/SSX.17807.
Though wounded in the jaw, continued to fight the port 0.5 machine gun in spite of a continuous hail of bomb splinters.
Recommended for decoration.
Acting Stoker Petty Officer James William Carr, D/K.63042.
In charge of No.2 Boiler Room when bomb damage caused the boiler room to rapidly fill with steam and put out all lights. Carr, although wounded, remained at his post until he had shut off all valves necessary to isolate the boiler, afterwards making attempts in protective clothing and wet towels, to enter the boiler room and locate damage.
Recommended for decoration.
Stoker Petty Officer John McCarthy, D/K.65035.
Though wounded in the hand and face, showed great zeal and devotion to duty in locating and repairing damage.
Recommended for decoration.
Lance Corporal Chapman, 6208138, 1/8th Middlesex Regiment.
Displayed great initiative, leadership and power of command in controlling an attempted rush of troops to the upper deck during a heavy bombing attack on
H.M.S. JAGUAR on the 29th May off Dunkirk.
Recommended for mention.
The following ratings formed part of the boats'
crews engaged in ferrying troops from Bray beach to various ships, and were so employed continuously for from 14 to 16 hours without food, wet through and subjected to frequent bombing attacks. Commanding
Officer JAVELIN reported that 'the conduct of JAGUAR'S
boats was exemplary and reflects credit on all concerned.'
