With reference to Dover Despatch of 5th July, 1940,
No. A14/0/1015/40, be pleased to lay before Their Lordships the accompanying additional lists of personnel recommended for
Decoration or Mention in Despatches for their services in
Operation "DYNAMO".

The ships concerned are:-
H.M.S. "BASILISK".
H.M.S. "VERITY".
H.M.S. "WAKEFUL".
H.M.S. "GRACIE FIELDS".
H.M.S. "PANGBOURNE".
H.M.S. "WAVERLEY".
In the case of H.M.S. "WAKEFUL" the recommendation is for one posthumous Mention, and is in addition to those previously forwarded; in all other cases no recommendations had been sent in previously as the requisite information was not available when the original lists were sent in. I am very anxious that the names mentioned should receive the awards recommended in order that the services of all the ships that took part in the operations should be properly and fairly recognised.

R.V.G. "GRACIE FIELDS - Tomporary Lieutenant Alfrod Clifford Weeks,
D.S.C., R.N.V.R.
(Awarded D.S.C. - London Gesotto 11th July, 1940).
S.M.O. "GRACIE FIELDS" was sunk during the night of
28th - 29th May as B. result of aircraft attack when returning from La Panno Beach with 700-800 troops on board.
The ship remained afloat for some time, being taken in tow by H.M.S. "PANGBOURNE", but she had to be abandoned in
B sinking position when noar T buoy.
RECOMMENDATIONS.

Displayed coolness and oourage during the air attack and subsequently, showing a good example and leadership.

RATINOS:

He performed excellent and untiring work in transporting troops between beach and ship and subsequently showed splendia powers 05 Leadership after the ship had been bombed.

OPERATION "DYNAMO" - RECOMMENDATIONS OF PERSONNEL.
H.M.S. "PANGBOURNE" - Acting Commander Francis Douglas-Watson, R.N.
The ship left Harwich, and arrived at Dunkirk on the evening of 28th May; she returned t 0 Margate and disembarked
400 troops. On her second trip to Dunkirk she rescued the crew of the "CLAN MACALISTER". She was subjected to air attacks from 1645 to 1715 and from 1000 to 1900 (29th May);
the latter was particularly severe and caused some 24
casualties, including Belgian soldiers. On her way back she towed the badly damaged "GRACIE FIELDS", rescuing the latter's crew when she sank.
After undergoing temporary repairs to D.G. wiring and for splinter damage, "PANGBOURNE" completed one more round trip to Dunkirk and also brought in a number of soldiers transferred to her by 8. trawler.
In all she completed 3 round trips, bringing back 920
men.
RECOMMENDATIONS.

Commander Douglas-Watson displayed courage, resource and professional skill of a high order in dangerous and most

difficult conditions. The steadiness of the ship's company in the face of severe air attack and casualties was an eloquent tribute to his leadership and example.

Leading Stoker Ronald Kenneth Robb, O.N. D/KX18359.

Remained on the forecastle during the first bombing attack in charge of the capstan. When this was put out of
DSM
action and he was badly wounded in both arms, he stood by in an exposed position ready to slip the cable. Afterwards he continued to assist the repair parties although one arm was out of action.
Recommended for Decoration.
Leading Seaman Alfred Reid, O.N. D/J13129.
As coxswain of the motor boat, Reid was of great assistance to the officer in charge of the boats on the beach.
He carried out all orders in prompt and seamanlike manner as well as acting on his own initiative when towing the various boat loads back to the ship.

Petty Officer William George Hoare, Q.N. P/J80058.
Continued fighting his gun although he was wounded very early in the attack. A later near miss severely wounded him and he was carried to shelter in the officers'
bathroom.
During the return trip to Dover his fortitude and courage was a magnificent example to the remainder of the ship's company, some of whom were undoubtedly suffering from shock and badly shaken. He was continually attended by volunteers who later repeated his remarks and Jokes when relieved.
