With reference to Admiralty Letter C.W. (H. & A.) of 24th October,
1940, be pleased to lay before Their Lordships the following recommendations of personnel for good service in H.M. Transport "MONA'S QUEEN".
2.-
The S.S. "MONA'S QUEEN", under the command of Captain R. Duggan,
D.S.C., Master, was sent to Ostend on 16th May to evacuate refugees, the town at that time being frequently bombed and the population in a state of panic. She subsequently conveyed troops both to Boulogne and Calais and also evacuated troops from the former place, which at the time was being shelled and bombed. She also carried ammunition to Boulogne, discharging it with her own resources.
When evacuation from Dunkirk commenced, she made two trips, conveying 1312 troops, before being sunk by a mine at Dunkirk when heavy casualties were sustained.

Recommendations for Decoration.
(a)
Mr. Ernest Harry Ambler, Radio Officer.
This officer displayed great courage, coolness and efficiency, and assisted his Captain in every possible way in addition to carrying out his own specialised duties. He particularly distinguished himself at Dunkirk by making urgent visual signals having to do with the movements and safety of the ship, although he was in an entirely exposed position and under aircraft bombardment at the time.
(b)
Egerton Watterson, Boatswain.
A seaman of the very best type, cool and collected under enemy fire, who showed excellent qualities of courage and leadership. In particular, when the Captain had given directions for those on the Bridge to take cover and lie down,
Watterson proceeded to the wheel house and relieved the
Helmsman, saying that it was his responsibility; as the wheel house was mostly glass and entirely unprotected the risk run was considerable.

I attach a letter received from the Radio Officer and of my reply.

I experienced great difficulty in obtaining any reports or recommendations from Personnel Vessels generally and, with particular reference to the "MONA'S QUEEN", I attach correspondence with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co., Ltd., in which I asked that the Master might furnish me with information, but which request was refused by the Directors of the Company.

If Their Lordships should wish to make further inquiries I should be glad to consider any recommendations with reference to the excellent services which were undoubtedly performed by that ship, and to submit names for consideration.

A few days ago, the Captain of this vessel, (Capt R. Duggan)
formed me that on information he had received, he wished to congratulate le on having been awarded the DSC with regard to my good services on the
Belgian and French coasts, and that he himself had been awarded the DSC.

so as I was congratulated in front of the ships company, and I wonder if it would be asking too much if you could kindly give me a note to the effect that no award has been made, this at least would definitely clear the matter up.
It appears that the mistake may have arisen out of the annoucement of Mention in Dispatches of C.P.O. Telegraphists Amos and
Boyce, of the H.M. Transport Monas Queen, this is a complete error, these two men did not at any time serve on the Monas Queen. I myself served on that ship from the commencement of the war until a few hours before she was sunk at Dunkirk. There were no R.N. ratings on board, and as far as in duties permitted (Radio Officer) I did the necessary signalling by Aldis my such ports, Boulogne Dunkirk, etc.

H.M.S. MEDWAY QUEEN - Lieutenant Alfred Thomas Cook. R.N.R.
This ship completed 7 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches between the 27th May and the 3rd June. During the time she was off the beaches she used her own boats for evacuating troops. The boats, whilst embarking the troops, were continually under fire, and the ship herself was bombed and machine gunned several times. Two enemy aircraft were shot down and altogether over 3,500 troops were brought back to England.
Recommendations.

Lieutenant Alfred Thomas Cook, R.N.R.
By his great skill, pertinacity, devotion to duty and able seamanship, was able to complete 7 trips.
The entries into Dunkirk harbour were made in the dark, and under very difficult conditions, due to wrecks and the congestion in Dunkirk. Although the ship was bombed many times, by his skill he was able to avoid any damage being done to the ship.
Recommended for decoration.
Sub. Lieutenant John David Greaves, R.N.R.
With great gallantry and devotion to duty whilst under fire, evacuated troops from the beaches in the boats belonging to the ship.
Recommended for decoration.
Engineer Sub. Lieutenant James Irvin, R.N.R.
By his devotion to duty and leadership kept the engines in an efficient state, although the 1st and
3rd Engineers had collapsed through exhaustion.
Recommended for mention.
RATINGS.
Petty Officer Henry McAllister, C/P.23168.
Was in general charge of the boats, and with great gallantry and devotion to duty evacuated many troops from the beaches whilst under fire.

With great devotion to duty and gallantry remained ashore during the evacuation, organising the troops and arranging for their embarkation in the small boats.

in taking off troops.
This ship was engaged in the operations at Dunkirk
Recommendation.
RATING:
stoker 1st Class Bryan Gaughan, C/KX.79268.
While SALTASH was rescuing survivors from S.S.
BRIGHTON QUEEN, this rating stripped and swan with a line to two men a quarter of a mile away. Finding it a hindrance, he discarded it and eventually rescued these two men. After a short rest, he continued to swim out with lines to men closer to the ship.
By his devotion to duty and great gallantry, he saved many men, although bombing and machine-gunning was going on at close proximity to him.
Recommended for decoration.
H.M.S. SKIPJACK. - Lieutenant-Commander Francis Babington Proudfoot,
R.N. (Retired)
This vessel did three trips to the beaches and on the
3rd June was sunk.
Recommendation.

In charge of Lewis gun on range-finder platform.
Showed great gallantry and devotion to duty in continuing to fire his gun after having been considerably shaken by first bombing attack. In last attack brought down one enemy plane and was badly burnt.

This civilian manned ship, and performed useful and gallant service.
Officers and men endured very trying conditions within
Dunkirk harbour during seven hours on 30th May, disembarking stores and redeiving troops. She was attacked by M.T.B.'s on the way in. On 28th was twice attacked by aircraft off
Dunkirk and rescued 950 troops and the crew of QUEEN OF THE
CHANNEL, who had been disabled by bombs and was sinking.
Everyone remained calm and gave the utmost assistance to the troops. The E.R.M. staff had to effect repairs under fire. All did well.
