A note about image and OCR quality

Every reasonable effort has been made to present these document images as flat, straight and accurately cropped as possible. 169	Log in to enlarge	Page 131 Operation "DYNAMO" and Recommendations of Personnel, PRAGUE - Clifford Roland Baxter, Master. Recommendation. RATING Frederick William John Rushy. This boy, whose age is only sixteen, was on duty as Captain's telegraph boy, stood at his post in an exposed position during incessant air attack. As the Master stated "His quiet courage is an example to all". After ship was berthed, instead of proceeding below for rest, he proceeded to a position where he was fully exposed, reloading the pans with ammunition for the Lewis and Bren guns. His one thought appeared to be to make himself as useful as possible. Recommended for decoration. ROYAL DAFFODIL - George Johnson. Master, (Decorated for this operation in London Gazette 7th June, 1940). This ship, throughout the operation, did seven trips to Dunkirk, and throughout the operation was continually either being bombed, or fired at from the shore. On the last trip the ship was actually hit by a bomb and holed near the waterline, but reached her destination safely. Ship brought off 7,066 men all told. Recommendations. OFFICERS. First and Second Officers Arthur Patrick Joseph Paterson and John Bingham Woodhouse. For their work in preventing the ship from sinking after having been hit by a bomb by listing the vessel and moving all movable gear. Recommended for mention. RATINGS. Chief Engineer Joseph Wilfrid Coulthard. Through his initiative, was able to keep the engines working although engine room was being flooded, thus enabling the ship to reach port. Assisting the Chief Engineer and enabling steam Recommended for mention. W. C. E. Smith, 7520070, R.A.M.C. This soldier was recommended by the Master for excellent work which he did in tending the wounded and sick through the voyage. Recommended for mention. ROYAL SOVEREIGN - Thomas Jeffrey Aldis, Master. (Decorated for this operation in London Gazette 7th June,1940). This ship completed seven trips, continually under gunfire and bombing. Brought a very large number of troops back to this country. HOSPITAL CARRIER - ST. ANDREW - Herbert Cecil Bond, Master. This ship completed two trips, and on the first she was so heavily shelled off Calais, and had no alternative but to escape the range of fire by crossing the minefields. Again, on the second trip she was continually under raids from aircraft. Recommendation. OFFICER. Master, Herbert Cecil Bond. Showed great skill in manoeuvring the ship into Dunkirk, whilst under continued bombardment from the air. Recommended for mention. ST. HELIER - Reginald Richard Pittman. Master. This ship did five trips to Dunkirk, and in addition, two trips bofore Dynamo started, to Calais and Boulogne.
