Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
H.M.S. ESK. - Lieutenant-Commander Richard John Hullis Couch, R.N.
ESK made 6 trips, 3 being to Bray beach, during the period 28th May - 3rd June, and brought to Dover about
4500 troops. On the 31st May, off Bray, she was forced, by shell fire from shore batteries, to move westward along the beach, ESK being holed in several places and having one oil fuel tank pierced. She was also subjected to bombing attacks on passage back to Dover, but avoided damage by the use of speed and zig-zagging. On the 1st June she again avoided damage off the entrance to Dunkirk by circling at
20 knots and when attacked later whilst taking survivors off
S.S. SCOTIA she drove off two bombers by the fire of 'B' and
'X' guns.

For judicious handling of his ship during air attack and whilst rescuing about 4500 troops from
Dunkirk and the beaches.

Lieutenant Clifford Woodreiff Carter, R.N.
For outstanding ability, devotion to duty and bravery in saving life when embarking troops from
S.S. SCOTIA during a bombing attack. His personal courage on several occasions was a fine example.

For devotion to duty and great efficiency as
Navigating Officer in most trying circumstances and under fire.

Sub. Lieutenant William Ronald Williams, R.N.
Commanded in succession a motor lighter, a tug and motor boat SWALLOW. Completed five round trips between p.m. 30/5 and a.m. 4/6. On first trip made beach between
Gravelines and Calais, landed, encountered two German soldiers, shot both, re-embarked and proceeded to Dunkirk.
On all trips did very well using pulling boats as well as his own craft. Finally left Dunkirk harbour on 4/6 when
German troops penetrated into the harbour area.

Dutch Skoot H.M.S. HILDA (Continued),
Dunkirk and subsequently, working in conjunction with a flotilla of small boats at La Panne, was largely responsible for the embarkation under difficulties of 5,000 troops in some 12 hours.
During heavy bomb attack rescued a large number of survivors from KEITH, including 2 British and one
French general officers. Followed this up by rescuing nearly all the survivors of the SKIPJACK.
On the voyage to United Kingdom similarly rescued survivors from the personnel vessel SCOTIA which had been bombed and sunk, only leaving the scene when other vessels appeared and his own craft was dangerously overloaded, Returning to Dunkirk,a further number of troops were taken off the beach, during which time he was bombed and intermittently shelled. Captain Pim, the local Senior Officer at the time of HILDA'S activities, reports most favourably on the efficient handling and performance of Lieutenant Gray.

Sea Cadet Lieutenant Harry Sidmouth Willing.
As First Lieutenant of the HILDA, Lieutenant
Syddons-Willing was indefatigable. He carried out arduous duties on the beach, assisted vessels
+
aground, and personally searched for troops in the dunes. He was remarked by Senior Officers on the spot as being outstanding in his conduct.

Godfrey, were outstanding in everything that they did. Many seriously wounded men were attended on board and everything possible was done for the large number of troops embarked. Conduct of these
2 ratings was exemplary throughout and they showed great calmness under fire.
