This ship did 3 trips to the beaches and having continually been bombed ordered and machine-gunned. On one was DO doing embarked dawn, the ship continued until 0600, and Dunkirk at by Rear Admiral, Dover, to move occasion, westward so attack one rating a further 450 men from Bray. During by to attack KEITH, the ship was again subjected to assist the was slightly wounded. Whilst proceeding one bombing and lifted and four bombs exploded under water near a the ship the ship bodily. Steam was lost, but was got going again in about a quarter of an hour, when further air attack took place. The ship proceeded back a port as quickly as possible. Ship was again attacked, but to she managed to reach Dover, proceeding on only one boiler. Recommendations. OFFICERS: Lieutenant-Commander Lionel James Spencer Ede, R.N. This Officer showed great zeal, initiative and seamanship during the operations. The whole time he was endeavouring to avoid air attacks, and, at the same time, pick up troops from the beaches. His initiative in disobeying the order of Rear Admiral, Dover, to proceed from the beach towards Dunkirk at dawn, enabled him to save a further 450 men, including 29 wounded cases. Having moved westward, an air attack took place upon the SKIPJACK and the KEITH, the SKIPJACK being sunk and the KEITH set on fire. Ship appeared to be in danger of sinking due to a near miss, but after a short time found she was still seaworthy and steam was got on to the main engine. By his great devotion to duty in face of these air attacks, he was still able to bring his ship safely to port. Recommended for decoration. Commissioned Engineer Thomas Kirby Reynolds, R.N. Showed great initiative and skill in getting steam up and the engines restarted after ship had been damaged by near misses, and in addition it was due to him that the morale of the engine room was so good after having had three heavy attacks in four days, apart from this attack, which was almost continuous for three hours. By his great devotion to duty, it is felt that the ship was got under way so quickly. Recommended for decoration. RATINGS: E.R.A. C. H. Andrew, M.28768. This ship was engaged in the operations at Dunkirk Recommendation. RATING: stoker 1st Class Bryan Gaughan, C/KX.79268. While SALTASH was rescuing survivors from S.S. BRIGHTON QUEEN, this rating stripped and swan with a line to two men a quarter of a mile away. Finding it a hindrance, he discarded it and eventually rescued these two men. After a short rest, he continued to swim out with lines to men closer to the ship. By his devotion to duty and great gallantry, he saved many men, although bombing and machine-gunning was going on at close proximity to him. Recommended for decoration. H.M.S. SKIPJACK. - Lieutenant-Commander Francis Babington Proudfoot, R.N. (Retired) This vessel did three trips to the beaches and on the 3rd June was sunk. Recommendation. RATING: Leading Seaman Murdo Macleod, R.N.R., 5849D. In charge of Lewis gun on range-finder platform. Showed great gallantry and devotion to duty in continuing to fire his gun after having been considerably shaken by first bombing attack. HILDA (Continued), Dunkirk and subsequently, working in conjunction with a flotilla of small boats at La Panne, was largely responsible for the embarkation under difficulties of 5,000 troops in some 12 hours. During heavy bomb attack rescued a large number of survivors from KEITH, including 2 British and one French general officers. Followed this up by rescuing nearly all the survivors of the SKIPJACK. On the voyage to United Kingdom similarly rescued survivors from the personnel vessel SCOTIA which had been bombed and sunk, only leaving the scene when other vessels appeared and his own craft was dangerously overloaded, Returning to Dunkirk,a further number of troops were taken off the beach, during which time he was bombed and intermittently shelled. Captain Pim, the local Senior Officer at the time of HILDA'S activities, reports most favourably on the efficient handling and performance of Lieutenant Gray. Recommended for decoration. Sea Cadet Lieutenant Harry Sidmouth Willing. As First Lieutenant of the HILDA, Lieutenant Syddons-Willing was indefatigable. He carried out arduous duties on the beach, assisted vessels + aground, and personally searched for troops in the dunes. He was remarked by Senior Officers on the spot as being outstanding in his conduct. Recommended for decoration. 1 RATINGS. Acting Petty Officer Leslie Charles Curd, C/JX.155644. Able Seaman George Edward Godfrey. C/JX.144633. Petty Officer Curd as coxswain and Able Seaman Godfrey, were outstanding in everything that they did. Many seriously wounded men were attended on board and everything possible was done for the large number of troops embarked. Conduct of these 2 ratings was exemplary throughout and they showed great calmness under fire. Recommended for decoration. Dutch Skoot H.M.S. HONDSRUG - Lieutenant Frederick Thomas Renny, R.N.R.
