Proceedings by H.M.S. SABRE for the period 27th May to 5th June.
buoy, came under fire from shore batteries. Speed was increased to "Full" and the wheel put over it each sungflash, keeping them book between 20 and 70 degrees abaft the boar. The range was quickly found, however, and several hits stistained on the bridge and upperworks. Course was therefore altered to the northward, smoke was made, and the ship continued to status AS such as possible without showing herself clear of the smoke. Just before turning away however, 3 shell passed through the Petty Officer's messdeck. It did not exploite, but it passed through the Master Gyn conpass, and a splinter from it penetrated the deck and SO
admitted water to No.2 O.LL Fuel tank.With this tank out of action there was insufficient all fuel remaining for the round trip to be completed. The D.C. cable had been pierced in four places and the magnetic compass vis therefore practically useless. The ship's was therefore teered by the sun(fortunpately visible) will traffic on route "X" was Liscerned. Thereafter it was possible to 80 from buoy to bucy. Sandhurst's lar vis severely riddled with shell splinters but the damage to the ship (except for the cyΓo compass and oil fuel tank) was only superficial and not a pan was touched.
Arrive: it Dover it 2030.
Defects vare taken in hand forthwith, and at noon on the 31st "SABRE" proceeded alongaide eastern are to facilitate the work. Nothing could be done about the gyro compass in the time available, but the D.C. cable MLS repaired and a great deal of other repair work WAS done by Sundhurst, of whose services I
should Like to express My apprediation. A 16 it motor skiff was borrowed in lieu of the damaged whaler, and Sabre's own motor boat was recovered having been repaired.
ALL hands had been utterly exhausted and the day and night in harbour give them a may lasse of life.
