I beg to report that at 8.45 pm. on Tuesday, 4th, when passing Dover I observed a motor boat about two miles outside my track, flying a white flag and trying to attract attention. I
proceeded to boat and found it packed with soldiers who said they were French from Dunkirk and had no more petrol. After careful examination I allowed them to come on board unarmed, and towed the boat towards Dover Harbour, distance about five miles. After speaking the examination vessel I anchored and a tug was sent out to me. The men, 24 and four Officers, 28 in all, were sent on ral the tug and the tug towed the boat into the Harbour. I then proceeded at 11.10 pm. to my destination.
The boat was the "Diana Mary" a British boat about 30 feet long. I sent a man down to make boat well fast and steer it. This man noticed a licence on dashboard "Thames Conservancy". One of the French Officers told how, at 7 am. on Tuesday morning, his party selected this boat out of a number abandoned on the beach.
She was well provisioned with food and a note in the boat in
English read good luck to those who get her." These soliders waited for tide to float it and then pushed out to sea. When
I picked them up at 8.45 pm. they had not the least idea where they were. Fog had been general all day.
