Ships carrying Troops from Dunkerque to Dover.
Ships were the target for continual attacks from enemy aircraft, submarines, and M. T. B'S.
They were required to berth under exceptionally difficult conditions in darkness, and in a confined harbour obstructed by wrecks and crowded with small craft under way.

Trainer of the M.Pom pom, of which 3 barrels were put out of action, together with casualties to the ful whole of the crew except himself, by a bomb bursting him close to the ship. Although shockingly wounded in four places, kept the remaining barrel firing until it ran out of ammunition, coolly waiting to fire until an aircraft flew up to the elevation on which the gun was laid. Noone realised that Thirwall was wounded until he was examined in the Drifter which rescued him. A remarkable display of bravery and devotion to duty, which deserves recognition of the highest order.

Trainer of the forward M.5; displayed great hom devotion to duty, and kept notably keen look-out, being the first to sight ships and buoys at night, and nearly all attacking aircraft. His speed in getting his gun into action could not have been bettered, and he displayed marked leadership over his crew. His gun was put out of action by the bombs, and Hirschfield proceeded, on his own initiative, to the after M.5, where all the crew were wounded but the guns still serviceable. He immediately brought the gun into action by himself, firing single-handed until the nk, attacks were broken off, It is almost certain that to he scored hits on two of the aircraft. He then assisted Telegraphist and Commanding Officer back with from the

These 19 drifters had been employed on 10 days'
DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked of zeal particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour, and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected for special recognition of their gallant services.

Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured, clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's behaviour was exceptional.

Commander English was severely injured by explosion of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after being the for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her falling internal into rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on the need of the enemy and then collapsed, due to injuries. hands He is now in hospital and his condition gives cause for grave anxiety.

Trawler organisation. Sent in charge of 6 trawlers to
Senior Executive Officer of the Dover Minesweeping
Dunkirk 29th May to 30th May. Arriving Dunkirk 1330, they were subjected to continuous air attack between
1530 and 2000 during the most severe air attack of the whole operation which caused heavy losses. At the time, at Dunkirk East Pier were berthed no less than
8 vessels. The trawlers assisted in berthing and n
unberthing these ships, embarking the troops as e
opportunity offered, Lieutenant Bill assisting the
Piermaster on the jetty. During the worst raid at
7
1800 when all the damage occurred, he personally, by drawing his revolver maintained order among the troops, who were inclined to panic. Under his direction trawlers assisted to clear the harbour of n
ships to safeguard the vital channel from being blocked. Subsequently, he detailed his vessels to assist those damaged, to rescue survivors and troops from the 6 vessels who were sunk or severely damaged.
Throughout this period of severe trial Lieutenant Bill remained cool and self-possessed and set a magnificent example to those around him. He showed sound judgment in his actions and his orders to his trawlers and was largely responsible for the fact that greater loss was iring not incurred. A fine display of officer-like qualities ster and gallantry under fire.

Dunkirk towing small craft, and on 31st May worked off the beaches embarking troops; in this work she was conspicuous.

DORIENTA suffered air bombardment and was finally severely damaged by the explosion of a shell from a shore battery. It was boarded by the local Senior
Officer, who considered the ship was completely out of action Owing to severe engine room damage. Nevertheless
Skipper Reynolds determined to bring his ship back and finally, navigating without any chart and with engines partially disabled, brought his ship back to port with troops on board.

Shell damaged and unseated the boiler, blew steam pipe trunks, wrecked the feed pump, filling the engine room with steam and hot water, flooding the bilges, choking pumps with ashes. Engineman

effect a rescue. Most of the KING ORRY's personnel attempted to swim to the yacht, but they were in such a weak state owing to the arduous service they had done that it was obvious many would drown. Elton thereupon dived into the water and assisted and supported as many of the swimmers as he could find for more than half an hour whilst the dinghy, rowed by the other rating, with loads of men, returned to the BYSTANDER. Whilst in the water Elton put many men on to life-rafts and towed them by swimming. The last men he brought back to the yacht on a life-raft, were towed by Elton in the water acting as a tow-rope with one hand on the raft and one hand on the dinghy - a remarkable feat of endurance. He was responsible for rescuing about 25 Officers and men. In addition to the above, Elton, in his capacity as Cook, supplied hot tea and food to all the 97 men on board within half an hour of leaving the scene of the wreck, the cooking utensils, etc. normally sufficing for 7.
He provided dry clothes and blankets and generally tended the rescued, many 01° whom were suffering from shock. This rating was unsparing in his efforts and

CONSTANT NYMPH then collected a number of odd boats trying to row off to ships filled with soldiers, and collected them and towed them to offshore vessels.
During thiss time fairly continuous bombing and shelling were encountered. Chargehand Smith remarks that being deaf and with a lot to do prevented him noticing these annoyances. Sailed from Sheerness on Friday, 31st May, in convoy for Dunkirk. En route rescued survivors of a French destroyer, then proceeded to the beaches.
There he was swamped by French soldiers swarming over his boat, which drifted ashore. Later the boat refloated and he took one V.C.O. and 8 British soldiers; he had no crew except one Stoker, who had great difficulty with the engine. Off Dunkirk, on the way home, the engine broke down, so he broke up the yacht's wood fittings and made the 8 soldiers paddle the boat. Later, the engine restarted after furing an 18 hour voyage. Next day, without orders, he ister sailed with a crew of one other Able Seaman, but was vivor turned back as his craft was too slow to take part in the night evacuation ordered for that evening.

During the first trip he undoubtedly saved the lived of many of the wounded soldiers on board by his professional attendance. When MOSQUITO was sinking he remained on board to the last, making certain that there were no living left board and tending and supervising the transport of the wounded. During passage in WORCESTER, when further bombing caused casualties, he was again much in evidence in his professional capacity. His conduct was in the best traditions of the Service, and of his profession.

FLARE-BURNING DRINTERS OF THE DOVER COMMAND.

These 19 drifters had been employed on 10 days'
continuous service in connection with the Calais operation and on patrol immediately prior to the commencement of
DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked zeal and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour, where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected for special recognition of their gallant services.

Commander English was severely injured by explosion of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after being the for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her to falling internal into rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on the injuries. hands He is now in hospital and his need of the enemy and then collapsed, condition due gives cause for grave anxiety.

Trawler organisation. Sent in charge of 6 trawlers to
Senior Executive Officer of the Dover Minesweeping
Dunkirk 29th May to 30th May, Arriving Dunkirk 1330, they were subjected to continuous air attack between
1530 and 2000 during the most severe air attack of the whole operation which caused heavy losses. At the time, at Dunkirk East Pier were berthed no less than
8 vessels. The trawlers assisted in berthing and unberthing these ships, embarking the troops as opportunity offered, Lieutenant Bill assisting the
Piermaster on the jetty. During the worst raid at
1800 when all the damage occurred, he personally, by drawing his revolver maintained order among the troops, who were inclined to panic. Under his direction trawlers assisted to clear the harbour of ships to safeguard the vital channel from being blocked. Subsequently, he detailed his vessels to assist those damaged, to rescue survivors and troops from the 6 vessels who were sunk or severely damaged.
Throughout this period of severe trial Lieutenant Bill remained cool and self-possessed and set a magnificent example to those around him. He showed sound judgment in his actions and his orders to his trawlers and was largely responsible for the fact that greater loss was not incurred. A fine display of officer-like qualities and gallantry under fire.

DORIENTA suffered air bombardment and was finally severely damaged by the explosion of a shell from a shore battery. It was boarded by the local Senior
Officer, who considered the ship was completely out of action owing to severe engine room damage. Nevertheless
Skipper Reynolds determined to bring his ship back and finally, navigating without any chart and with engines partially disabled, brought his ship back to port with troops on board.
