It is evident that few if any ships had to face more severe bombing attacks and that during the whole time the conduct of the ships company was exemplary.
On the afternoon of 31st May, the ship survived both dive and high level bombing attacks and early the next day was subjected to machine gun attack followed by an intensive
Sive bombing attack. A second powerful dive bombing attack followed as a result of which the ship was lost.
Further bombing and machine gun attacks took place while the ship was being abandoned. Many survivors went to the
Tug St. Abbs, which after escaping one dive bombing attack, was sunk in a further attack; many of "Keith's" survivors being lost in her.
Apart from the names given below, there were many incidents of gallant conduct by men who were lost either in

Since the outbreak of hostilities he has borne the brunt of all the difficult problems of organising Contraband Control and Naval Officer's in Charge Offices, during which time he never spared himself working long hours and proving an invaluable adviser on all Merchant Shipping and Mercantile problems as well as an able Secretary.

He got away all casualties with utmost promptitude and worked in conjunction most successfully with the Military Medical Officers.

This ship completed 7 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches between the 27th May and the 3rd June. During the time she was off the beaches she used her own boats for evacuating troops. The boats, whilst embarking the troops, were continually under fire, and the ship herself was bombed and machine gunned several times. Two enemy aircraft were shot down and altogether over 3,500 troops were brought back to England.

This vessel proceeded to Bray beach on the 29th May, being bombed and machine-gunned on the way across. While off the beach embarking troops in the evening, the third bombing attack took place. The ship was struck on the quarter deck, about 40 feet of stern being completely blown away, No.2 gun put out of action and the 0.5 machin gun platforms wrecked, in addition to much other damage.
In spite of the damage done, of the fact that the ship was grounded aft and of the casualties suffered (3 office and 13 men killed, 1 officer and 18 men wounded), BIDEFOR
continued to embark troops during the night, and when eventually towed off and home, carried 400 troops to
England on the 31st May.
