On the order "Abandon ship' he stayed behind shutting off stean and drawing fires, which he did successfully on his own initiative. His conduct was in accordance with the high traditions of the Engine Room Branch.

This civilian manned ship, and performed useful and gallant service.
Officers and men endured very trying conditions within
Dunkirk harbour during seven hours on 30th May, disembarking o
stores and redeiving troops. She was attacked by M.T.B.'s on the way in. On 28th was twice attacked by aircraft off
Dunkirk and rescued 950 troops and the crew of QUEEN OF THE
CHANNEL, who had been disabled by bombs and was sinking.
Everyone remained calm and gave the utmost assistance to the troops. The E.R.M. staff had to effect repairs under fire. All did well.

This ship played a prominent part in Operation DYNAMO, not only evacuating troops but in bombarding shore batteries, and in taking BIDEFORD in tow to Dover, a 30
hour passage, and is probably responsible for saving that ship. Also carried out demolition work in the wreck of
MOSQUITO to ensure the destruction of all secret books and other gear, it not then being known that MOSQUITO
had already taken the correct steps to safeguard secret matter. The ship had only been in commission for a fortnight prior to joining this operation.

These ratings are selected from the motor boats and whalers, and the crews on two occasions were from Malo beach under surf conditions, transporting the employed for some 4 hours on end ferrying off troops some 280 Allied troops under bombardment from air and sporadic artillery fire.
Stoker Beer was also a Lewis gunner of the ship displayed and the greatest keenness, cheerfulness and damaged one enemy aircraft. These ratings devotion to duty.
Recommend Stoker Beer to be decorated, and the remainder mentioned.

1,000 troops being lifted from the beach to his ship and other offshore craft, there being no Army officers present in charge of these troops.

Did excellent work on board and on shore, where on the last night of beach evacuation he hunted up several small parties of troops hidden amongst the sand dunes, thereby ensuring their safety. He also took charge of the successful demolition work in
MOSQUITO, a job of great difficulty owing to the movement of the wreck in the swell. At all times he displayed exceptional initiative.

Until sunk by enemy air attack did good work off the beaches. Evacuated over 1,200 troops, including a large number of wounded, and the General Officer Command
1st Corps; also took the Personnel Vessel NORMANIA in tow until she sank, then rescued the crew.

Lieutenant Denis Harold Palmer Gardiner, R.N.
MOSQUITO was subjected to an unusually severe series of air attacks, during which Lieutenant Gardiner handled his ship with coolness and courage. He showed good judgment and seamanship in his work off the beaches, not only in evacuation with his own vessel, but in directing the activities of other power boats in the vicinity.
By remaining off the beaches during his second visit when subjected to a very severe air attack which caused minor damage to the ship, and casualties on board, he succeeded in rescuing a further large number of troops. MOSQUITO was finally attacked by 20
Junkers and was literally enveloped by salvos and bombs for a considerable period, and was frequently hit, the ship commencing to sink. There is no doubt that Lieutenant Gardiner displayed admirable coolness and courage throughout these exacting events, and as
Commanding Officer of his ship gave an excellent lead to his officers and men, who themselves emulated his gallantry. Before finally leaving his ship, Lieutenant
Gardiner carried out all the duties required by the regulations and Service custom. He was finally wounded when on passage in WORCESTER.

During the first trip he undoubtedly saved the lived of many of the wounded soldiers on board by his professional attendance. When MOSQUITO was sinking he remained on board to the last, making certain that there were no living left board and tending and supervising the transport of the wounded. During passage in WORCESTER, when further bombing caused casualties, he was again much in evidence in his professional capacity. His conduct was in the best traditions of the Service, and of his profession.
