HARVESTER was sent to Dover and completed 3 round trips
After only 21/2 days of "working-up" after commissioning, to the coast. On the last of these she experienced the full weight of the intensive air attack early on the
1st June. Her A.A. gunnery was most effective, and she shared in the destruction of at least 3 enemy aircraft.
The ship was well handled throughout. Her inshore boat work was excellent.

SCIMITAR made 4 trips to the beaches and 1 to Dunkirk
Pier during the period 28th May and 1st June, rescuing a total of 2,200 troops. On her 6th trip (to Dunkirk) she was recalled but rescued 500 troops from S.S. PRAGUE.
The Commanding Officer stresses the skill and determination of the boats parties in trying conditions d and under shell fire and aircraft attacks.

Danc bombing attacks were made on her whilst in the Dunkirk
Roads and in Dunkirk Harbour.

These Leading Seamen were coxswains of

Volunteered and drove rescued motor boat to hasten embarkation of troops. When the boat overturned he rescued a soldier who was hampered by full kit, and led him to safety on the night of 28th

This ship did two trips, and on one the ship was put on to the beach, thus facilitating the embarkation of troops. On these two trips, the ship brought back over
1,000 troops. The ship was continually being bombed, and on one occasion a shell burst inside the ship killing five soldiers and wounding seven.

This ship did 4 trips, three to the beaches (Retired). and one to Dunkirk using her own boats to take troops from the beaches. Many times she was attacked by aircraft and also machine guns.

This Officer showed great initiative and seamanship bringing off troops from the beaches and also in getting into Dunkirk, in view of the many difficulties due to congestion of ships and wrecks.
It was entirely due to being able to place his ship so close to the beaches that so many troops were brought off.
By his initiative and devotion to duty, he was enabled to bring off a large number of troops from

PORTSMOUTH INNER PATROL YACHTS.
Lieutenant Cyril Cornelius Bone, R.N.V.R, Senior Officer.
Although the unit of nine yachts only worked off the beaches from 0600/31/5 to dawn 1/6, they performed particularly valuable work off La Panne and Bray at a critical time when La Panne was about to be finally evacuated,
British troops either embarking or withdrawing westward.
The period also happened to be one of intensive air bombardment, interspersed with sporadic heavy artillery fire on the beaches.
Particularly notable was the work of these boats inshore, which included the embarkation of Lord Gort and the G.H.Q. party. 3500 - 4000 troops were lifted,

Sub. -Lieutenant Thomas Ellison Godman. R.N.V.R.
This Officer displayed remarkable determination, endurance and devotion to duty. Commencing service in
SERIOLA, he skilfully worked open boats through the surf on the beaches during31/5. The next day he was ordered to command a naval steam picket-boat, and by his determination and good judgment succeeded in operating this craft for nearly 24 hours, though its coal capacity only sufficed for
6 hours. Also seized and directed the activities of a number of abandoned boats found drifting off the coast.
Finally returned to Ramsgate and joined another vessel for a further day's service at Dunkirk.
Specially recommended by Senior Officers for great coolness under heavy fire in dangerous conditions.

This rating was alone in the twin-diesel engineroom and although on du ty day and night and sick with the fumes was, with the greatest difficulty, persuaded finally to leave his post and take a rest and fresh air, when a stoker was found to relieve him for a short time. By his strong sense of duty and cheerful demeanour set an excellent example to those around him.

Besides their work in BOUNTY, from p.m. 31st May when the La Panne beach and piers were being heavily shelled, volunteers were called for to take in a whaler to bring off a final contingent of soldiers.
These three young men came forward and returned to the beach again and again. They all were invariably to be found where work was difficult and dangerous.

Commodore Maintenance Taylor was appointed to Sheerness for duty
Division, Admiralty. He built up an organisation from
Tuesday 28th May, and prepared a multitude of small craft for service on the coast, with special items of equipment water. and organised the manning, either from volunteers or demanded from time to time such as rafts, ladders, lifebuoys, by men from the Chatham Depot. This Sheerness organisation acted as a clearing house and despatching point for these vessels, the total number sent out from Sheerness being about
125 by: Sunday, June 2nd. Commodore Taylor then proceeded to Ramsgate to help the Naval Officer in Charge, and to assist in the co-operation of the motor boats etc., with the larger vessels. On the last 2 nights of the evacuation, at my request, he personally organised and conducted the operation of the motor boat flotilla from Ramsgate to evacuate French from the St. Malo beach and from the inner
Harbour Dunkirk, both of which localities were regarded as positions of honour, being at that time under continuous shell fire. These ventures were eminently successful, and a large number of French troops were dealt with by Commodore
Taylor's craft. To these craft fell the honour of being the last units to leave Dunkirk in the early hours of June
4th.

This boat was used off the beaches at Dunkirk during severe bombing from the air. Direct hits were registered on several vessels. Boat proceeded to pick up survivors during the bombing attacks, and, having filled up, proceeded towards Ramsgate. On her way across she was fired at by 3 trawlers at 1,100 yards range, one of whom then tried to ram her. All the crew and survivors jumped overboard except two R.N.V.R. officers and Able Seaman
Strand. The R.N.V.R. officers were wounded and Strand took charge of the boat, narrowly preventing the boat being rammed. The boat was eventually towed to Ramsgate.

CHANNEL, who had been disabled by bombs and was sinking.
Everyone remained calm and gave the utmost assistance to the troops. The E.R.M. staff had to effect repairs under fire. All did well.

This M.T.B. did four trips to Dunkirk, where she ferried British and French soldiers, and ganerally acted as despatch boat. Attacked by enemy aircraft, one rating wounded by machine gun bullet.
Whilst patrolling the beaches, she collected and supplied fuel for motor boats, and transferred soldiers to destroyers and also towed motor boats. Due to damage to hull, she returned to Portsmouth on the 1st June.

When necessary grounded his ship on the beach and devised many ingenious and seamanlike methods of taking off troops from the beach by means of life rafts, abandoned life-boats and other craft which came to hand, normal boat work being impossible with his small crew.
