A note about image and OCR quality

Every reasonable effort has been made to present these document images as flat, straight and accurately cropped as possible. Historical records can be difficult to photograph or scan because of tight bindings, deep gutters, page curvature, folds, creases, fragile paper, uneven edges, shadows, glare, skewed pages, fading, stains, tears, attachments and restrictions on how a document may be handled. Considerable post-production work has been undertaken to crop, align, flatten and enhance the images where practicable, but the results represent our best effort rather than exact facsimiles. Leith's No.15, dated 2/7/40 was received in D.0.9002/40. As a result of this report, W.P.S., Newcastle was asked to obtain targets composed of bitumastic deck covering fixed both upon mild steel plates and upon wood. These were supplied by Messrs. Wailes Dove Bitumastic Ltd. Captain EXCELLENT carried out firing trials on 15/8/40. The trial results, although promising, were not sufficiently so to warrant the adoption of this material for protective purposes. (See EXCELLENT's No.X 1798/7 dated 19.8.40 in G.011567/40.) It was then decided to try a coarser composition such as that used in cattle boats, but before tests could be made a report was received from D.S.D. (IA/AW & D) giving particulars of a similar material which showed greater promise, containing a coarse granite aggregate and using bitumen as a binder. This material is being fitted to merchant ships, but before adopting it in warships it was considered necessary to get EXCELLENT to carry out firing tests which are in hand. I.V.Goodall. D.
