Handled his ship with skill during evacuation from Dunkirk and the beaches, and skilfully brought her home when severely damaged by bombing in spite of subsequent heavy bombing attacks by large numbers of aircraft.

Lieutenant (E) Andrew Cormack Mahony, R.N.
By his coolness and energy set a fine example

to his department when dealing with the damage below after the ship had been bombed. He rapidly assessed the damage, and by his efforts succeeded in getting way on the ship in the shortest possible time.

Displayed outstanding zeal and energy throughout.
Without the assistance of any Medical Officer he dealt most efficiently and untiringly with the wounded, many of whom were badly maimed and some of whom he extricated unaided from a pile of corpses and debris.
