I have the honour to submit the following report on the sinking of H.M.T. "CALVI", while under my command, as Senior Officer of M/S Trawlers.
Whilst alongside the pier at Dunkerque on the
29th May, 1940, she was struck by a heavy enemy bomb and sank immediately.

Due to the intensity of the bombing all ships were ordered to leave the harbour by the Pier Master -
Commander Clouston, and further investigation was not possible.

On entering the port of Dunkerque all ships were ordered to lock up all secret and confidential books and documents in the steel chests which were to be placedin the Skippers' cabin under lock and key. It is presumed

that these sank with the ship in the position ordered.
Confirmation of this was not obtained due to the fact that Skipper and Unit Officer were both seriously

The "Nautilus" transferred between 700 and 800 B.E.F. to the two destroyers.

dated 1st August, 1940, be pleased to lay before
Their Lordships the following report resulting from an enquiry held into the loss of H.M. Flare
Burning Drifter "Boy Roy" on 28th May, 1940.
2. Temporary Skipper E.F. Dettman, R.N.R., who was in command of "Boy Roy" was examined on
5th September, 1940.
3. As "Boy Roy" was approaching Dunkirk at about
2100, Dive bombers dropped about 12 bombs all round the ship. These near misses opened the seams of the wooden hull and she made water everywhere.
4. As the ship was sinking fast, the Commanding
Officer turned her aside out of the channel and ran her towards the shore on the Western side of the entrance where she was grounded about 7 minutes after the attack.
5. Before furnaces were flooded, C.B's and S.P's
N.
were burnt. The secret charts, two Lewis guns and the breech of the 3-pdr. gun were transferred to a destroyer.
6. There is nothing to be learnt from the experience of "Boy Roy" which was a wooden hull and being subjected to such tremendous shocks from explosion, was certain to sink almost immediately.

2. Temporary Skipper B.D. Spindler, R.N.R., who was in command of "Calvi" was examined on
5th September, 1940.

3. About noon on 29th May, "Calvi" was alongside the wall at Dunkirk with "Grenade" berthed outside her.

4. In a dive bombing attack one bomb struck
"Calvi" aft and she sank instantly by the stern, leaving her bow standing up so as to be visible at low water.
5. The Commanding Officer had, before going in to Dunkirk, burnt secret charts and some S.P's and
C.B's. The remainder of the S.P's and C.B's were in a steel chest and were left in the ship, it not being possible to remove the chest in the very short time available before she sank.
(ii), I am making enquiries to ascertain what books were held by this Trawler and whether the circumstances of their loss have been previously reported.

With reference to Admiralty Letter N.L. 6245/40
dated 1st August, 1940, be pleased to lay before Their Lordships the following report arising from an enquiry into the loss of
H.M. M/S Trawler POLLY JOHNSON on 29th May, 1940.
2.
Skipper Lieutenant L. Lake, R.N.R. who was in command of POLLY JOHNSON was examined on 1st October, 1940.
3.
At about 1500 on 29th May when POLLY JOHNSON was secured to CALVI which was alongside the pier at Dunkirk and astern of GRENADE, she was subjected to a heavy bombing attack.
Splinters from near misses perforated the ship's port side with small holes just above the water line and put the 12 pdr. gun out of action.
4.
The ship was subjected to further bombing attacks during the next two hours but at 1700, with about 50 troops and some survivors from GRENADE on board, she proceeded out of harbour, being able to make only very slow speed.
5.
Engine and Boiler rooms were making water steadily and ship's pumps were unable to cope with the rate of flooding.
6.
At about 1830 midway between Middlekerk and Nieuport
Buoys when it was obvious that POLLY JOHNSON would not remain afloat much longer, Trawler ARLEY came alongside and took all hands on board.

ARLEY then endeavoured to destroy POLLY JOHNSON by gunfire but failed and left her in a sinking condition in about
7/8 fathoms. It is considered, however, that she was unlikely to remain afloat for long.

Although it was not possible to elicit full particulars of the damage sustained by this ship it seems, from the evidence, in view of the fact that water was fast entering the Engine and Boiler room that this compartment was flooding below the waterline as result of heavy underwater explosions.
The flooding was accentuated when draught increased to admit water through holes already made above the waterline.

Secret Charts were burnt in the stokehold before ship was abandoned and all S.P's and C.B's were transferred to ARLEY
and landed at Dover.
