Transports carrying Troops from Dunkerque to Dover.
The transports of necessity provided a vulnerable and easy target for enemy aircraft, but were required to make their passages while subject to constant bombing attacks, and frequently under shell fire.
They were required to berth in darkness in a confined harbour obstructed by wrecks, and crowded with small craft under way.

Throughout the operation he continued firing his gun at the enemy planes, although being machine gunned and bombed the whole time. He succeeded in bringing down an enemy plane.

MAID OF ORLEANS - Gordon Dyer Walker, Master. (Decorated for this operation in London Gazette 7th June, 1940).
This ship completed four trips to Dunkirk, and in addition, three trips prior to Operation Dynamo to Calais and Boulogne. A very large number of troops were brought back to England. Ship continually being bombed by aircraft. In one trip the crew discharged a large number of petrol cans, containing water, on to the jetty at
Dunkirk.

NAVAL MEDICAL PARTIES.
Naval Medical Officers and ratings were drafted from
H.M.S. PEMBROKE for work in Dunkirk harbour and in the larger personnel vessels on the 29th of May and 4th June.
The work carried out by the whole party was most valuable and efficient, consisting as it did of treating casualties, and operating where possible under exciting and adverse circumstances calling for initiative and improvisation.
It happened that the Medical party sent to personnel vessels voyaged in those whose civilian crews were showing signs of loss of morale, there being a disagreeable air of apprehension amongst the ship's companies. These Medical parties in the midst of their preparations did their utmost to instil better feeling amongst the officers and men of these vessels. Their conduct in all cases was in accordance with the highest traditions of the Serivce and their profession.

Surgeon-Commander William Gordon Fitzpatrick, R.N.
With his party worked on Dunkirk Mole, in the
ST. HELIER, MAID OF ORLEANS, MANX MAN and the
PRINCESS MAUD on successive days. He was the

PEMBROKE and showed high organising abilities and leadership, in adition to his efficient personal treatment of casualties.

These ships not only evacuated troops from Dunkirk but also maintained routine sweeps under most difficult circumstances. By his cheerful leadership and tireless efforts, this officer was able to maintain his entire force at my disposal, and thereby contributed largely to the success of the enterprise.

ESK made 6 trips, 3 being to Bray beach, during the period 28th May - 3rd June, and brought to Dover about
4500 troops. On the 31st May, off Bray, she was forced, by shell fire from shore batteries, to move westward along the beach, ESK being holed in several places and having one oil fuel tank pierced. She was also subjected to bombing attacks on passage back to Dover, but avoided damage by the use of speed and zig-zagging. On the 1st June she again avoided damage off the entrance to Dunkirk by circling at
20 knots and when attacked later whilst taking survivors off
S.S. SCOTIA she drove off two bombers by the fire of 'B' and
'X' guns.
