I beg to report that on the 29th May last I sailed from
Portsmouth harbour bound for Ramsgate having previously been
detailed to do so under the command of Sub.Licut.Dell, R.N.R.
At 9.30 p.m. the same day I arrived at Ramagate and
anchored in the roadstead at 10.30 p.m.:the BOXO night I
received morning. orders to sail for Dunkirk at 5 Balle the following
Sub.Lieut Dell in turn handed no the charts and sailing
directions for safe keeping. At 5 Stalle I ms ready to sail but
was delayed by the absence of the Licutenant. knowing the job
in hand was urgent I decided to sail without him BO at 6.15
I have up anchor and left for Dunkirk.
I arrived at Dunkirk 11 8.0% and dropped anchor in the
roadstead to await orders but as no orders were fortheoming I
decided to launch my boats and proceed with the job of taking
the soldiers aboard.
Everything went off amoothly until the ground swell increased
on the beach. Owing to the pounding the boats received they
started to leak very badly rendering the position very difficult.

subject to intensebbembing from the air but still they carried on.
